The ankle bone, supporting the heel bone, The ankle bone, supporting the shin bone, The shin bone, supporting the thigh bone, The thigh bone, supporting the hip bone, The hip bone, supporting the spine, The spine, supporting the neck bone, The neck bone, supporting the skull. The skull, resting on the neck bone, The neck bone, resting on the spine, The spine, resting on the hip bone, The hip bone, resting on the thigh bone, The thigh bone, resting on the shin bone, The shin bone, resting on the ankle bone, The ankle bone, resting on the heel bone. Just as with a pile of bricks, wood, or dung, the lower ones don't know, "We are supporting the ones above," nor do the upper ones know, "We are resting on the ones below," just so, the heel bone doesn't know, "I am supporting the ankle bone," the ankle bone doesn't know, "I am supporting the shin bone," the shin bone doesn't know, "I am supporting the thigh bone," the thigh bone doesn't know, "I am supporting the hip bone," the hip bone doesn't know, "I am supporting the spine," the spine doesn't know, "I am supporting the neck bone," the neck bone doesn't know, "I am supporting the skull," the skull doesn't know, "I am resting on the neck bone," the neck bone doesn't know, "I am resting on the spine," the spine doesn't know, "I am resting on the hip bone," the hip bone doesn't know, "I am resting on the thigh bone," the thigh bone doesn't know, "I am resting on the shin bone," the shin bone doesn't know, "I am resting on the ankle bone," the ankle bone doesn't know, "I am resting on the heel bone." They support each other, through the force of habit. These things are without merit. Thus, bone, in this body, is a separate part, non-conscious, undeclared, empty, without soul, stiff, the earth element. Bone marrow is situated inside those bones. Just as, when sinew threads and the like are placed inside bamboo joints and the like, the bamboo joints and the like do not know, "Sinew threads and the like have been placed in us," nor do the sinew threads and the like know, "We are situated in bamboo joints and the like," even so, the bones do not know, "Bone marrow is situated inside us," nor does the bone marrow know, "I am situated inside the bones." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, bone marrow, in this body, is a separate part, non-conscious, undeclared, empty, without soul, stiff, the earth element. Kidney, having emerged from the throat passage with a single root, having gone a little way, bound by a thick sinew divided in two, stands surrounding the heart flesh. Just as, in two mango fruits bound by a stalk, the stalk does not know, "I have bound two mango fruits," nor do the two mango fruits know, "We are bound by a stalk," even so, the thick sinew does not know, "I have bound the kidney," nor does the kidney know, "I am bound by a thick sinew." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, kidney, in this body, is a separate part, non-conscious, undeclared, empty, without soul, stiff, the earth element. Heart is situated inside the body, relying on the middle of the rib cage. Just as, with a piece of flesh placed relying on the inside of an old, worn-out palanquin frame, the inside of the old, worn-out palanquin frame does not know, "A piece of flesh is placed relying on me," nor does the piece of flesh know, "I am situated relying on the inside of an old, worn-out palanquin frame," even so, the inside of the rib cage does not know, "The heart is situated relying on me," nor does the heart know, " I dwell, relying on the cage of the chest. These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the heart, in this body, is a separate part, unconscious, undeclared, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. The liver, inside the body, dwells, relying on the right side within the two breasts. Just as a lump of flesh attached to the side of a potsherd cooking pot, the potsherd does not know, "A lump of flesh is attached to me," nor does the lump of flesh know, "I am attached to the potsherd." Even so, the right side within the breasts does not know, "The liver dwells, relying on me," nor does the liver know, "I dwell, relying on the right side within the two breasts." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the liver, in this body, is a separate part, unconscious, undeclared, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. The omentum, the covered omentum, dwells surrounding the heart and kidneys, the uncovered omentum, dwells enveloping the flesh underneath the skin in the entire body. Just as with flesh wrapped in cloth, the flesh does not know, "I am wrapped in cloth," nor does the cloth know, "I have wrapped the flesh." Even so, the kidneys and heart and the flesh in the entire body do not know, "I am covered by the omentum," nor does the omentum know, "I have covered the kidneys and heart and the flesh in the entire body." These phenomena are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the omentum, in this body, is a separate part, unconscious, undeclared, empty, soulless, stiff, the earth element. The spleen, on the left side of the heart, dwells, relying on the top side of the membrane of the stomach. Just as a lump of cow dung It stands relying on me, nor does a lump of cow dung know, "I stand relying on the top of the stomach," even so, the top of the stomach does not know, "The spleen stands relying on me," nor does the spleen know, "I stand relying on the top of the stomach." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the spleen, in this body, is a separate part, unconscious, undeclared, empty, without soul, stiff, the earth element. The lungs, inside the body, between the two breasts, covering the heart and liver, stand hanging down. There, just as in an old building, a bird's nest hangs down, the old building does not know, "A bird's nest hangs down in me," nor does the bird's nest know, "I hang down in an old building," even so, the inside of the body does not know, "The lungs stand hanging down in me," nor do the lungs know, "I stand hanging down in such a body." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the lungs, in this body, is a separate part, unconscious, undeclared, empty, without soul, stiff, the earth element. The intestines, from the throat to the end of the rectum, stand inside the body. There, just as in a trough of blood, a severed head with veins is placed, the trough of blood does not know, "A severed head with veins is placed in me," nor does the severed head with veins know, "I am placed in a trough of blood," even so, the inside of the body does not know, "The intestines stand in me," nor do the intestines know, "I stand inside the body." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and reflection. Thus, the intestines, in this body, is a separate part, unconscious, undeclared, empty, without soul, stiff, the earth element. The mesentery, inside the intestines, binding twenty-one coils of the intestines, Here. There, just as when ropes are sewn into a foot-wiping mat, the foot-wiping mat does not know, "The ropes are sewn into me," nor do the ropes know, "We are sewn into the foot-wiping mat," even so, the intestines do not know, "The mesentery is attached to me," nor does the mesentery know, "I am attached to the intestines." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and consideration. Thus, the mesentery is a distinct part in this body, unconscious, unmanifested, empty, without essence, inert, the earth element. The stomach contents, situated in the stomach, consisting of what has been eaten, drunk, chewed, and tasted. There, just as in a dog's bowl containing dog vomit, the dog's bowl does not know, "Dog vomit is in me," nor does the dog vomit know, "I am in the dog's bowl," even so, the stomach does not know, "Stomach contents are in me," nor do the stomach contents know, "I am in the stomach." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and consideration. Thus, the stomach contents are a distinct part in this body, unconscious, unmanifested, empty, without essence, inert, the earth element. Feces, situated in the large intestine, resembling a bamboo joint eight finger-breadths in length, at the end of the alimentary canal. There, just as with fine, pale mud placed inside a split bamboo joint, the bamboo joint does not know, "Pale mud is in me," nor does the pale mud know, "I am in the bamboo joint," even so, the large intestine does not know, "Feces are in me," nor do the feces know, "I am in the large intestine." These things are devoid of mutual awareness and consideration. Thus, feces are a distinct part in this body, unconscious, unmanifested, empty, without essence, inert, the earth element. Brain, situated inside the skull. There, just as with a lump of dough placed inside an old gourd bowl, the gourd bowl does not know, "Dough is in me," nor does the A piece of dough knows, "I am sitting in a bowl," just as the skull does not know, "The brain is sitting in me," nor does the brain know, "I am sitting in the skull." These elements are devoid of mutual consideration and awareness. Thus, the brain, in this body, is a distinct, unconscious, unmanifest, empty, soulless, rigid element, the earth element. Moreover, by "Yaṃvā panaññampīti," he shows the earth element, which is inherent in the three elements beginning with the water element, as distinct earth, solely by way of its characteristics. In the explanation of the external earth element, "ayo" means black iron. "Loha" means iron by type, iron by difference, artificial iron, and demonic iron, of four kinds. Therein, iron, tin, gold, pewter, lead, copper, and loadstone, these seven are called iron by type. Serpent-nose iron is called iron by difference. Bronze, bell metal, and orichalcum, these three are called artificial iron.
