By the Elder, named Buddhaghosa by his teachers, who is adorned with pure faith, wisdom, and energy; endowed with a collection of virtues such as morality, good conduct, uprightness, and gentleness; capable of penetrating the depths of his own doctrine and other doctrines; endowed with skill in wisdom; whose light of knowledge is unhindered in the Teacher's Dispensation, which is the Tipiṭaka and its commentaries; a great grammarian; endowed with the charm of sweet and noble words, flowing forth with ease born of perfect articulation; speaking what is appropriate and excellent; a supreme debater; a great poet; an ornament to the lineage of the Theras, the lamps of the Theravāda tradition, dwelling in the Mahāvihāra, whose intellects are well-established in the superhuman states adorned with qualities such as the six higher knowledges and the analytical knowledges; of vast and pure wisdom – this commentary on the Vinaya, named Samantapāsādikā, was made. May it stand in the world, for those seeking to cross over the world; showing to noble sons, the way to purity of conduct.
