The Section of Questions 1. Conformity to Conditions 1. The Section of Analysis Condition of Root/Cause 119. A mental phenomenon is a condition to a mental phenomenon by way of cause. Mental roots are a condition to associated aggregates by way of cause. At the moment of rebirth-linking...etc. (1) A mental phenomenon is a condition to a non-mental phenomenon by way of cause. Mental roots are a condition to consciousness and to mind-originated material forms by way of cause. At the moment of rebirth-linking...etc. (2) A mental phenomenon is a condition to a mental phenomenon and to a non-mental phenomenon by way of cause. Mental roots are a condition to associated aggregates and to consciousness and to mind-originated material forms by way of cause. At the moment of rebirth-linking...etc. (3) Condition of Object 120. A mental phenomenon is a condition to a mental phenomenon by way of object. Taking mental aggregates as object, mental aggregates arise. (The root should be asked.) Taking mental aggregates as object, consciousness arises. (The root should be asked.) Taking mental aggregates as object, mental aggregates and consciousness arise. (3) 121. A non-mental phenomenon is a condition to a non-mental phenomenon by way of object. Having emerged from the noble paths...etc. they reflect on the fruit, they reflect on Nibbāna. Nibbāna is a condition to the change-of-lineage, to the purification, to the path, to the fruit, to the advertence by way of object. The eye...etc. the base. Non-mental aggregates as impermanent...etc. one discerns, one enjoys, one delights in, taking that as object, consciousness arises. With the divine eye one sees forms. With the divine ear-element one hears sounds. With the knowledge of penetrating others' minds He knows the mind of one with a mind without mental factors. The base of infinite space... ...the base of nothingness... The visible object for eye-consciousness... ...the tangible object for body-consciousness... Non-mental factors for knowledge of psychic powers, for knowledge of others' minds, for knowledge of past lives, for knowledge of future events, for advertence, are a condition by way of object. (1) A non-mental factor for a mental factor is a condition by way of object. The Noble Ones, having arisen from the path, reflect on Nibbana (as before). The eye... the base... in non-mental factors, seeing them as impermanent... ...sorrow arises. With the divine eye, he sees visible objects. With the divine ear, he hears sounds. With knowledge of others' minds, he knows the mind of one with a mind without mental factors. The base of infinite space... ...the base of nothingness for the base of neither perception nor non-perception... The visible object for aggregates associated with eye-consciousness... ...the tangible object for aggregates associated with body-consciousness... Non-mental factors for knowledge of psychic powers, for knowledge of others' minds, for knowledge of past lives, for knowledge of future events, for advertence, are a condition by way of object. (2) A non-mental factor for a mental factor and a non-mental factor is a condition by way of object. The Noble Ones, having arisen from the path, reflect on Nibbana (as before). The eye... the base... in non-mental factors, seeing them as impermanent... ...he sees insightfully, he enjoys, he delights; because of that, mind and its associated aggregates arise. With the divine eye, he sees visible objects... The visible object for eye-consciousness and its associated aggregates is a condition by way of object... ...the tangible object for body-consciousness and its associated aggregates... Non-mental factors for knowledge of psychic powers, for knowledge of others' minds, for knowledge of past lives, for knowledge of future events, for advertence, are a condition by way of object. (3) 2. Mental and non-mental phenomena are causes for a mental phenomenon by way of object condition— Having mental aggregates and mind as object, mental aggregates arise. (The root should be asked) Having mental aggregates and mind as object, mind arises. (The root should be asked) Having mental aggregates and mind as object, mental aggregates and mind arise. (3) Dominance Condition 123. A mental phenomenon is a cause for a mental phenomenon by way of dominance condition— Object dominance, co-arisen dominance. Object dominance— Having made mental aggregates dominant, mental aggregates arise. Co-arisen dominance— Mental dominance is a cause for associated aggregates by way of dominance condition. (The root should be asked) Object dominance— Having made mental aggregates dominant, mind arises. Co-arisen dominance— Mental dominance is a cause for mind and mind-originated material forms by way of dominance condition. (The root should be asked) Object dominance— Having made mental aggregates dominant, mental aggregates and mind arise. Co-arisen dominance— Mental dominance is a cause for associated aggregates, mind, and mind-originated material forms by way of dominance condition. (3) 124. A non-mental phenomenon is a cause for a non-mental phenomenon by way of dominance condition— Object dominance, co-arisen dominance. Object dominance— Having emerged from the noble paths…etc… Having made Nibbāna dominant, they review; Nibbāna is a cause for change-of-lineage, for purification, for path, for fruit by way of dominance condition; Eye…etc… Having made base and non-mental aggregates dominant, one enjoys, delights in it; Having made that dominant, mind arises. Co-arisen dominance— Non-mental dominance is a cause for mind-originated material forms by way of dominance condition. (1) A non-mental phenomenon is a cause for a mental phenomenon by way of dominance condition— Object dominance, Co-nascent dominance. Object dominance – having arisen from the noble paths…etc… having made Nibbāna weighty…etc… (similar to the first passage); the eye…etc… the base having made non-mental aggregates weighty one delights in, rejoices in, having made that weighty, lust arises, wrong view arises. Co-nascent dominance – non-mental dominance for the associated aggregates is a condition by way of dominance. (2) A non-mental phenomenon for a mental and a non-mental phenomenon is a condition by way of dominance – object dominance, co-nascent dominance. Object dominance – having arisen from the noble paths…etc… Nibbāna…etc… (first passage) having made non-mental aggregates weighty one delights in, rejoices in, having made that weighty, mental aggregates and consciousness arise. Co-nascent dominance – non-mental dominance for the associated aggregates and for mind-originated material phenomena is a condition by way of dominance. (3) A mental and a non-mental phenomenon for a mental phenomenon is a condition by way of dominance – object dominance… three (only object dominance). Beginning with the Contiguity Condition 125. A mental phenomenon for a mental phenomenon is a condition by way of contiguity – earlier, earlier mental aggregates for later, later mental aggregates are a condition by way of contiguity. (The root should be asked) earlier, earlier mental aggregates for later, later consciousness are a condition by way of contiguity. (The root should be asked) earlier, earlier mental aggregates for later, later mental aggregates and for consciousness are a condition by way of contiguity. (3) 126. A non-mental phenomenon for a non-mental phenomenon is a condition by way of contiguity – earlier, earlier consciousness for later, later consciousness is a condition by way of contiguity; adaptation for change-of-lineage…etc… for the attainment of fruition is a condition by way of contiguity. (1) A non-mental phenomenon for a mental phenomenon It is a condition by way of immediate contiguity. (Thus, three should be done, similar to the first section. It should be completed, without variation.) Mental and non-mental phenomena are a condition for mental phenomena by way of immediate contiguity... three (there is no advertence or emergence). It is a condition by way of perfect contiguity... nine, it is a condition by way of co-nascence... nine (similar to the Dependent Origination section), it is a condition by way of mutuality... nine (similar to the Dependent Origination section), it is a condition by way of support... nine (similar to the Condition section). Decisive Support Condition 127. Mental phenomena are a condition for mental phenomena by way of decisive support – objective decisive support, immediate decisive support, natural decisive support... etc.... Natural decisive support – mental aggregates are a condition for mental aggregates by way of decisive support. (The root should be asked, three decisive supports) Mental aggregates are a condition for consciousness by way of decisive support. (The root should be asked, three decisive supports) Mental aggregates are a condition for mental aggregates and for consciousness by way of decisive support. (3) 128. Non-mental phenomena are a condition for non-mental phenomena by way of decisive support – objective decisive support, immediate decisive support, natural decisive support... etc.... Natural decisive support – relying on climate... food... lodging... consciousness, one gives dana... etc.... one breaks the Sangha; climate... food... lodging... consciousness are a condition by way of decisive support for faith... etc.... for wisdom... for lust... etc.... for aspiration, for bodily pleasure, for bodily pain, for the path, for the attainment of fruition. (1) Non-mental phenomena are a condition for mental phenomena by way of decisive support – objective decisive support, immediate decisive support, natural decisive support... etc.... Natural decisive support – relying on climate... food... lodging... consciousness, one gives dana... etc.... (three, similar to the first section, without variation). Mental and non-mental phenomena are a condition for mental phenomena
