(b) Or whoever has not developed the faculty of final knowledge, does he not abandon the faculty of displeasure? One endowed with the path of a Non-returner has not developed the faculty of final knowledge, but does abandon the faculty of displeasure. Seven individuals have not developed the faculty of final knowledge and do not abandon the faculty of displeasure. (a) Whoever does not abandon the faculty of displeasure, has he not realized the faculty of having known? An Arahant does not abandon the faculty of displeasure, but has realized the faculty of having known. Eight individuals do not abandon the faculty of displeasure and have not realized the faculty of having known. (b) Or whoever has not realized the faculty of having known, does he not abandon the faculty of displeasure? One endowed with the path of a Non-returner has not realized the faculty of having known, but does abandon the faculty of displeasure. Eight individuals have not realized the faculty of having known and do not abandon the faculty of displeasure. (Rooted in the faculty of displeasure) 465. (a) Whoever does not develop the faculty of 'I shall know the unknown', has he not developed the faculty of final knowledge? An Arahant does not develop the faculty of 'I shall know the unknown' he does not develop it, nor has he developed the faculty of final knowledge. Seven individuals do not develop the faculty of knowing the unknown, and have not developed the faculty of final knowledge. (B) Or again, whoever has not developed the faculty of final knowledge, does he not develop the faculty of knowing the unknown? The eighth individual has not developed the faculty of final knowledge, but he does not not develop the faculty of knowing the unknown. The Present and Future Section (A) Direct Order 467. (A) Whoever fully understands the faculty of the eye, is he displeased will abandon the faculty of displeasure? No. (Kha) Or, will he who abandons the faculty of displeasure fully understand the faculty of sight? No. (Ka) Will he who fully understands the faculty of sight develop the faculty of "I shall know the unknown"? No. (Kha) Or, will he who develops the faculty of "I shall know the unknown" fully understand the faculty of sight? No. (Ka) Will he who fully understands the faculty of sight develop the faculty of final knowledge? No. (Kha) Or, will he who develops the faculty of final knowledge fully understand the faculty of sight? No. (Ka) Will he who fully understands the faculty of sight realize the faculty of one who has known? Yes. (Kha) Or, will he who realizes the faculty of one who has known fully understand the faculty of sight? Seven individuals will realize the faculty of one who has known, but they do not fully understand the faculty of sight. The one endowed with the highest path will realize the faculty of one who has known and will fully understand the faculty of sight. (Rooted in the faculty of sight) 468. (Ka) Will he who abandons the faculty of displeasure develop the faculty of "I shall know the unknown"? No. (Kha) Or, will he who develops the faculty of "I shall know the unknown" abandon the faculty of displeasure? No. (Ka) Will he who abandons the faculty of displeasure develop the faculty of final knowledge? Yes. (Kha) Or, will he who develops the faculty of final knowledge abandon the faculty of displeasure? Six individuals will develop the faculty of final knowledge, but they do not abandon the faculty of displeasure. The one endowed with the non-returner's path will develop the faculty of final knowledge and will abandon the faculty of displeasure. (Ka) Will he who abandons the faculty of displeasure realize the faculty of one who has known? Yes. (Kha) Or, will he who realizes the faculty of one who has known abandon the faculty of displeasure? Seven individuals will realize the faculty of one who has known, but they do not abandon the faculty of displeasure. (K (a) Does he who develops the faculty of "I shall know the unknown" develop the faculty of final knowledge? Yes. (b) Or does he who will develop the faculty of final knowledge develop the faculty of "I shall know the unknown"? Six individuals will develop the faculty of final knowledge, but do not develop the faculty of "I shall know the unknown". The eighth one will develop the faculty of final knowledge and develops the faculty of "I shall know the unknown". (a) Does he who develops the faculty of "I shall know the unknown" realize the faculty of the one who knows? Yes. (b) Or does he who will realize the faculty of the one who knows develop the faculty of "I shall know the unknown"? Seven individuals will realize the faculty of the one who knows, but do not develop the faculty of "I shall know the unknown". The eighth one will realize the faculty of the one who knows and develops the faculty of "I shall know the unknown". (Rooted in the faculty of "I shall know the unknown") 470. (a) Does he who develops the faculty of final knowledge realize the faculty of the one who knows? Yes. (b) Or does he who will realize the faculty of the one who knows develop the faculty of final knowledge? Five individuals will realize the faculty of the one who knows, but do not develop the faculty of final knowledge. Three individuals endowed with the path will realize the faculty of the one who knows and develop the faculty of final knowledge. (Rooted in the faculty of final knowledge) (b) The contrary 471. (a) Does he who does not fully understand the faculty of the eye not abandon the faculty of mental pain? Five individuals do not fully understand the faculty of the eye, but will not abandon the faculty of mental pain. Four individuals do not fully understand the faculty of the eye and will not abandon the faculty of mental pain. (b) Or does he who will not abandon the faculty of mental pain not fully understand the faculty of the eye? The individual endowed with the highest path will not abandon the faculty of mental pain, but does not not fully understand the faculty of the eye. Four individuals will not abandon the faculty of mental pain and do not fully understand the faculty of the eye. (a) Does he who does not fully understand the faculty of the eye, he of "I shall know the unknown"... Will he not develop the faculty of knowing what is not yet known? Those ordinary people who will attain the path do not fully understand the faculty of sight, but they will develop the faculty of knowing what is not yet known. Eight individuals do not fully understand the faculty of sight and do not develop the faculty of knowing what is not yet known. (B) Or again, whoever does not develop the faculty of knowing what is not yet known, does he not fully understand the faculty of sight? One endowed with the highest path does not develop the faculty of knowing what is not yet known, but he does fully understand the faculty of sight.
