Twenty-third Chapter 1. Discussion on Single Intention Is the sexual act to be engaged in with a single intention? Yes. With a single intention, should one be a non-recluse, a non-monk, one whose roots are cut, one who has incurred a pārājika offense? It should not be said thus... ... Is the sexual act to be engaged in with a single intention? Yes. With a single intention, should life be destroyed, what is not given be taken, lies be spoken, slander be spoken, harsh words be spoken, frivolous talk be engaged in, a house broken into, plunder carried out, a solitary householder be made, one stand on the highway, another's wife be gone to, a village destroyer be made, a town destroyer be made? It should not be said thus... Discussion on Single Intention finished. Twenty-third Chapter 2. Discussion on the Praise of Arahants Do non-humans engage in sexual acts because of the praise of Arahants? Yes. Do non-humans destroy life... take what is not given, speak lies, speak slander, speak harsh words, engage in frivolous talk, break into houses, carry out plunder, make solitary householders, stand on the highway, go to another's wife, make village destroyers... make town destroyers, because of the praise of Arahants? It should not be said thus... Discussion on the Praise of Arahants finished. Twenty-third Chapter 3-7. Discussion on Sovereignty, Self-will, etc. Does a Bodhisatta go to a state of woe because of sovereignty and self-will? Yes. Does a Bodhisatta go to hell, go to Sañjīva, go to Kālasutta, go to Tāpana, go to Mahātāpana, go to Saṅghātaka, go to Roruva... go to Avīci, because of sovereignty and self-will? It should not be said thus... Does a Bodhisatta go to a state of woe because of sovereignty and self-will? Yes. "A Bodhisatta goes to a state of woe because of sovereignty and self-will" – this is indeed a Suttanta. Is it? No. If "the Bodhisatta goes to a state of woe due to acting according to his own will and power" – there is no such discourse, and indeed it should not be said – "the Bodhisatta goes to a state of woe due to acting according to his own will and power." 911. Does the Bodhisatta enter the womb due to acting according to his own will and power? Yes. Would the Bodhisatta be reborn in hell, or reborn in the animal realm, due to acting according to his own will and power? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Does the Bodhisatta enter the womb due to acting according to his own will and power? Yes. Is the Bodhisatta endowed with psychic power? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Is the Bodhisatta endowed with psychic power? Yes. Has the Bodhisatta developed the basis of psychic power of desire... (etc.) ...the basis of psychic power of effort... (etc.) ...the basis of psychic power of thought... (etc.) ...the basis of psychic power of investigation? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Does the Bodhisatta enter the womb due to acting according to his own will and power? Yes. Is there a discourse that says "the Bodhisatta enters the womb due to acting according to his own will and power"? No. If "the Bodhisatta enters the womb due to acting according to his own will and power" – there is no such discourse, and indeed it should not be said – "the Bodhisatta enters the womb due to acting according to his own will and power." 912. Did the Bodhisatta perform severe austerities due to acting according to his own will and power? Yes. Did the Bodhisatta, due to acting according to his own will and power, hold the view "the world is eternal"? "the world is not eternal"? (etc.) "the world is finite"? (etc.) "the world is infinite"? "the soul is the same as the body"? "the soul is different from the body"? "the Tathāgata exists after death"? "the Tathāgata does not exist after death"? "the Tathāgata both exists and does not exist after death"? (etc.) "the Tathāgata neither exists nor does not exist after death"? It should not be said thus... (etc.) Did the Bodhisatta perform severe austerities due to acting according to his own will and power? Yes. Is there a discourse that says "the Bodhisatta performed severe austerities due to acting according to his own will and power"? is there? No. If it is said, ‘‘The Bodhisatta performed difficult deeds for the sake of power and self-will’’ – there is no such Sutta, and indeed it should not be said, ‘‘The Bodhisatta performed difficult deeds for the sake of power and self-will.’’ 913. Did the Bodhisatta perform extreme asceticism for the sake of power and self-will, did he dedicate himself to another teacher? Yes. Did the Bodhisatta, for the sake of power and self-will, return to the view, ‘‘The world is eternal’’… (and so on)… ‘‘The Tathāgata neither is nor is not after death’’? It should not be said so… (and so on)… 914. Did the Bodhisatta dedicate himself to another teacher for the sake of power and self-will? Yes. Is there a Sutta that says, ‘‘The Bodhisatta dedicated himself to another teacher for the sake of power and self-will’’? No. If it is said, ‘‘The Bodhisatta dedicated himself to another teacher for the sake of power and self-will’’ – there is no such Sutta, and indeed it should not be said, ‘‘The Bodhisatta dedicated himself to another teacher for the sake of power and self-will.’’ The discussion on power and self-will is concluded. 23. The Twenty-Third Chapter (225) 8. Discussion on Counterparts 915. Is there not lust, a counterpart of lust? Yes. Is there not contact, a counterpart of contact? Is there not feeling, a counterpart of feeling? Is there not perception, a counterpart of perception? Is there not volition, a counterpart of volition? Is there not consciousness, a counterpart of consciousness? Is there not faith, a counterpart of faith? Is there not energy, a counterpart of energy? Is there not mindfulness, a counterpart of mindfulness? Is there not concentration, a counterpart of concentration? Is there not wisdom, a counterpart of wisdom? It should not be said so… (and so on)… 916. Is there not hatred, a counterpart of hatred? Is there not delusion, a counterpart of delusion? Is there not defilement, a counterpart of defilement? Yes. Is there not contact, a counterpart of contact… (and so on)… Is there not wisdom, a counterpart of wisdom? It should not be said so… (and so on)… The discussion on counterparts is concluded. 23. The Twenty-Third Chapter (226) 9. Discussion on the Unperfected 917. Form is unperfected. Is it unproduced? Yes. Is form not impermanent, not conditioned, not dependently arisen, not subject to destruction, not subject to vanishing, not subject to dispassion, not subject to cessation, not subject to change? One should not speak thus... But isn't form impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, subject to destruction, subject to vanishing, subject to dispassion, subject to cessation, subject to change? Yes. If form is impermanent, conditioned... subject to change, then indeed it should not be said: "Form is unproduced." Is only suffering produced? Yes. But hasn't the Blessed One said: "What is impermanent is suffering" – "Form is impermanent"? Yes. If the Blessed One has said: "What is impermanent is suffering" – "Form is impermanent," then indeed it should not be said: "Only suffering is produced." ... Feeling... perception... formations... consciousness... eye-base... dharma-base... eye-element... dharma-element... eye-faculty... the faculty of knowing the unknown is unproduced? Yes. Is the faculty of knowing the unknown not impermanent... not subject to change? One should not speak thus... But isn't the faculty of knowing the unknown impermanent, conditioned... subject to change? Yes. If the faculty of knowing the unknown is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, subject to destruction, subject to vanishing, subject to dispassion, subject to cessation, subject to change, then indeed it should not be said: "The faculty of knowing the unknown is unproduced." Is only suffering produced? Yes. But hasn't the Blessed One said: "What is impermanent is suffering" – "The faculty of knowing the unknown is impermanent"? Yes. If the Blessed One has said: "What is impermanent is suffering" – "The faculty of knowing the unknown is impermanent," then indeed it should not be said: "Only suffering is produced." The discourse on the Unproduced is finished. The Twenty-Third Chapter. Its summary – With one intention, sexual conduct should be practiced, by the praise of Arahants, non-humans, sexual... They practice that Dhamma, the Bodhisatta goes to a state of woe due to desire for power and self-will, he enters the womb, he performed difficult practices, he caused torment, he pointed to another teacher, there is no lust, nor anything resembling lust, there is no hatred, nor anything resembling hatred, there is no delusion, nor anything resembling delusion, there is no defilement, nor anything resembling defilement, form is not fully perfected, the faculty of knowing the unknown is not fully perfected.
