Twenty-first Chapter (200) 1. Discourse on the Teaching Is the Teaching made new? Yes. Are the foundations of mindfulness made new? It should not be said so... Is the Teaching made new? Yes. Are the right efforts... ...the bases of psychic power... ...the faculties... ...the powers... ...the factors of enlightenment made new? It should not be said so... Is what was unwholesome before made wholesome afterwards? It should not be said so... Is what was with influxes before... ...bound by fetters... ...by ties... ...by floods... ...by yokes... ...by hindrances... ...by clinging... ...by attachment... ...what was corrupting afterwards made uncorrupting? It should not be said so... Is there anyone who makes the Teaching of the Tathāgata new? Yes. Is there anyone who makes the foundations of mindfulness new? It should not be said so... Is there anyone who makes the right efforts... ...the bases of psychic power... ...the faculties... ...the powers... ...the factors of enlightenment new? It should not be said so... Is there anyone who makes what was unwholesome before wholesome afterwards? It should not be said so... Discourse on Not Being Separated Is the ordinary person not separated from the states of the three realms? Yes. Is the ordinary person not separated from the contacts of the three realms... ...from the feelings of the three realms... ...perceptions... ...volitions... ...consciousnesses... ...faith... ...energy... ...mindfulness... ...concentrations... ...from the wisdoms of the three realms? It should not be said so... The ordinary person... Is he not free from deeds of the three realms? Yes. At the moment a worldling gives a robe, at that moment does he enter and dwell in the first jhana... ...enter and dwell in the sphere of infinite space? It should not be said so... At the moment a worldling gives almsfood... ...gives a dwelling... ...gives requisites for the sick, medicine, at that moment does he enter and dwell in the fourth jhana... ...enter and dwell in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception? It should not be said so... 880. Should it not be said: "A worldling is not free from deeds of the three realms"? Yes. Is the worldling's karma leading to the form realm and formless realm fully understood? It should not be said so. Then, a worldling is not free from deeds of the three realms... The discourse on non-freedom is concluded. 21. The Twenty-first Chapter (202) 3. The Discourse on Fetters 881. Is there any fetter, without abandoning which, arahantship is attained? Yes. Is there any self-view, without abandoning which... ...any doubt, without abandoning which... ...any clinging to rites and rituals, without abandoning which... ...any lust, without abandoning which... ...any hatred, without abandoning which... ...any delusion, without abandoning which... ...any shamelessness, without abandoning which, arahantship is attained? It should not be said so... Is there any fetter, without abandoning which, arahantship is attained? Yes. Is an Arahant with lust, with hatred, with delusion, with conceit, with hypocrisy, with arrogance, with distress, with defilements? It should not be said so... Is not an Arahant without lust, without hatred, without delusion, without conceit, without hypocrisy, without arrogance, without distress, without defilements? Yes. If an Arahant is without lust... ...without defilements, then it should certainly not be said: "Is there any fetter, without abandoning which, arahantship is attained?" 882. Should it not be said: "Is there any fetter, without abandoning which, arahantship is attained?" Yes. Does an Arahant know all that is within the Buddha's domain? It should not be said so. The Discourse on Psychic Power Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? Yes. "May trees always be leafy!" Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? It should not be said thus... May trees always be flowery... May trees always be fruitful... May it always be moonlight... May it always be safe... May it always be abundant... "May it always be well!" Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? It should not be said thus... Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? Yes. "May arisen contact not cease!" Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? It should not be said thus... May arisen feeling... perception... volition... consciousness... faith... energy... mindfulness... concentration... wisdom not cease! Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? It should not be said thus... Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? Yes. "May form be permanent!" Is there power of intention... feeling... perception... formations... "May consciousness be permanent!" Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? It should not be said thus... Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? Yes. "May beings subject to birth not be born!" Is there... "May beings subject to aging not age!" "May beings subject to sickness not sicken!" "May beings subject to death not die!" Is there power of intention for Buddhas or disciples? It should not be said thus... Should it not be said: "There is power of intention for Buddhas or disciples"? Yes. Did not Venerable Pilindavaccha resolve for King Seniya Bimbisāra's palace "May it be gold!" and it became gold? Yes. If Venerable Pilindavaccha for King Seniya Bimbisāra's... He resolved a palace to be golden, and it was indeed golden. Therefore, it should be said: "There is power of intention for Buddhas or for disciples." The discourse on psychic power is concluded. 21. What is the name of that Blessed One? What is his birth? What is his clan? What are the names of his parents? What are the names of his pair of disciples? What is the name of his attendant? What kind of robe does he wear? What kind of bowl does he carry? In which village or town or city or kingdom or country? It should not be said so... (etc.) In the southern direction... (etc.) ...in the western direction... (etc.) ...in the northern direction... (etc.) Does a Buddha exist in the lower direction? It should not be said so... (etc.) Does a Buddha exist in the lower direction? Yes. What is the name of that Blessed One... (etc.) ...or country? It should not be said so... (etc.) Does a Buddha exist in the upper direction? It should not be said so... (etc.) Does a Buddha exist in the upper direction? Yes. Does he exist in the realm of the Four Great Kings... (etc.) ...in Tāvatiṃsa... (etc.) ...in Yāma... (etc.) ...in Tusita... (etc.) ...in the realm of those who delight in creation... (etc.) ...in the realm of those who have power over others' creations... (etc.) ...in the Brahma world? (etc.) Is there not an indeterminate class? Yes. If there is an indeterminate class, then indeed it should not be said – "All phenomena are fixed." Are all phenomena fixed? Yes. Were not three classes stated by the Blessed One – the class fixed as wrongness, the class fixed as rightness, and the indeterminate class [dha. sa. tikamātikā 15]? Yes. If three classes were stated by the Blessed One – the class fixed as wrongness, the class fixed as rightness, and the indeterminate class, then indeed it should not be said – "All phenomena are fixed." Is form fixed as form? Yes. Is it fixed as wrongness? No, it should not be said thus... (etc.) Is it fixed as rightness? No, it should not be said thus... (etc.) Feeling... (etc.) Perception...
