right concentration, then indeed it should not be said – "The path is five-factored." Is the path five-factored? Yes. But wasn't it said by the Blessed One – Of paths, the eight-factored is best, Of truths, the four statements; Dispassion is best of dhammas, And of two-footed beings, the one with vision. Is there such a Sutta? Yes. Then the path is eight-factored. 873. Right speech is a path factor and is that not the path? Yes. Right view is a path factor, and is that not the path? It should not be said so… Right speech is a path factor, and is that not the path? Yes. Right intention… Right effort… Right mindfulness… Right concentration is a path factor, and is that not the path? It should not be said so… Right action… Right livelihood is a path factor, and is that not the path? Yes. Right view… Right concentration is a path factor, and is that not the path? It should not be said so… Right view is a path factor, and is that the path? Yes. Right speech is a path factor, and is that the path? It should not be said so… Right view is a path factor, and is that the path? Yes. Right action… Right livelihood is a path factor, and is that the path? Was it not said by the Blessed One: “Previously, his bodily action, verbal action, and livelihood are well-purified; thus, this Noble Eightfold Path of his reaches the perfection of development”? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then it is the fivefold path. 875. Is it the fivefold path? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One: “In whatever Dhamma and Discipline, Subhadda, the Noble Eightfold Path is not found, there no ascetic is found, there no second ascetic is found, there no third ascetic is found, there no fourth ascetic is found. But in whatever Dhamma and Discipline, Subhadda, the Noble Eightfold Path is found, there an ascetic is found, there a second… there a third… there a fourth ascetic is found. In this Dhamma and Discipline, Subhadda, the Noble Eightfold Path is found…” is found. Here, Subhadda, is a recluse, here is a second recluse, here is a third recluse, here is a fourth recluse. Empty are the doctrines of other recluses! Is there such a Sutta? Yes. Then it is the Eightfold Path. The discourse on the Path is finished. 20. The Twentieth Chapter (199) 6. Discourse on Knowledge 876. Is knowledge with twelve aspects supramundane? Yes. Are there twelve supramundane knowledges? It should not be said thus... Are there twelve supramundane knowledges? Yes. Are there twelve Stream-entry paths? It should not be said thus... Are there twelve Stream-entry paths? Yes. Are there twelve Stream-entry fruits? It should not be said thus... Are there twelve Once-returner paths... Non-returner paths... Arahantship paths? It should not be said thus... Are there twelve Arahantship paths? Yes. Are there twelve Arahantship fruits? It should not be said thus.... 877. Should it not be said that "knowledge with twelve aspects is supramundane"? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One – "This is the noble truth of suffering" – thus, monks, concerning things unheard before, vision arose in me, knowledge arose, wisdom arose, insight arose, light arose. "This noble truth of suffering should be fully understood" – thus, monks... "This noble truth of suffering has been fully understood" – thus, monks... "This is the noble truth of the origin of suffering" – thus, monks... "This noble truth of the origin of suffering should be abandoned" – thus, monks... "This noble truth of the origin of suffering has been abandoned" – thus, monks... "This is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering" – thus, monks... "This noble truth of the cessation of suffering should be realized" – thus, monks... "This noble truth of the cessation of suffering has been realized" – thus, monks... Its summary – Matricide is an immediate (karma), Patricide is an immediate (karma), Killing an Arahant is an immediate (karma), Causing blood to flow (from a Buddha) is an immediate (karma), Causing a schism in the Sangha is an immediate (karma), There is no knowledge for the ordinary person, There are no hell-keepers in the hells, There are animals among the devas, The five-factored path, The twelve-factored knowledge is supramundane. The Fourth Fifties. Its summary – Reproof, Accumulation of merit, Stood, And matricide in the past.
