The Sixteenth Chapter (156) 1. Discussion on Restraint Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Does one person restrain another's mind, saying: "Do not lust," "Do not hate," "Do not delude," "Do not defile"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Does one person restrain another's arisen contact, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen feeling, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen perception, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen volition, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen consciousness, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen faith, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen energy, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen mindfulness, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen concentration, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's arisen wisdom, saying: "May it not cease"? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Does one person abandon passion for another's sake? Does one person abandon hatred for another's sake? Does one person abandon heedlessness for another's sake? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Does one person develop the path for another's sake? Does one person develop the foundations of mindfulness for another's sake? Does one person develop the factors of awakening for another's sake? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Does one person fully understand suffering for another's sake, abandon the origin, realize cessation, develop the path? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Is one person the doer for another? Does one person do happiness and suffering for another, and another experiences it? It should not be said so. Does one person restrain another's mind? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One: "By oneself is evil done, By oneself is one defiled; By oneself is evil not done, By oneself is one purified; Purity and impurity are individual, No one purifies another"? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Therefore, it should not be said: "One person restrains another's mind." Should it not be said: "One person restrains another's mind"? Yes. Are there not those who have attained power? Are there not those who have gained mastery? Yes. If there are... they have attained power, they are masters, therefore it should be said – "one restrains another's mind." The discourse on restraint is finished. 16. The Sixteenth Chapter (157) 2. The Discourse on Encouragement 745. Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Does one encourage another's mind, saying "do not lust," "do not hate," "do not delude," "do not defile"? It should not be said thus... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Does one generate for another the root of skillfulness, non-greed... generate the root of skillfulness, non-hatred... generate the root of skillfulness, non-delusion... generate faith... generate energy... generate mindfulness... generate concentration... generate wisdom? It should not be said thus... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Does one encourage another's arisen contact, saying "may it not cease"? It should not be said thus... another's arisen feeling... another's arisen wisdom, saying "may it not cease"? It should not be said thus.... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Does one abandon passion for another's sake... abandon hatred... abandon delusion... abandon shamelessness? It should not be said thus.... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Does one develop the path for another's sake... develop mindfulness foundations... develop the factors of awakening? It should not be said thus.... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Does one fully understand suffering for another's sake... develop the path? It should not be said thus.... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Is one the doer for another, happiness and suffering done by another, does one do and another experience? It should not be said thus.... Does one encourage another's mind? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One – "Evil is done by oneself... no other purifies another"? Is there such a Sutta? Yes. Therefore it should not be said – "one encourages another's mind." 746. It should not be said – "Does one person grasp the mind of another?" "Yes." "Are there not those who have attained power, who are masters?" "Yes." "If there are those who have attained power, who are masters, then indeed it should be said – 'one person grasps the mind of another.'" The discussion on grasping is finished. 16. The Sixteenth Chapter (158) 3. Discussion on the Bestowal of Happiness 747. "Does one person bestow happiness upon another?" "Yes." "Does one person bestow suffering upon another?" "It should not be said thus... (and so on)..." "Does one person not bestow suffering upon another?" "Yes." "Does one person not bestow happiness upon another?" "It should not be said thus... (and so on)..." "Does one person bestow happiness upon another?" "Yes." "Does one person bestow happiness upon another for their own sake, bestow happiness upon others, bestow happiness upon that one?" "It should not be said thus... (and so on)..." "Does one person bestow happiness upon another neither for their own sake, nor for others, nor for that one?" "Yes." "If one person bestows happiness upon another neither for their own sake, nor for others, nor for that one, then indeed it should not be said – 'one person bestows happiness upon another.'" "Does one person bestow happiness upon another?" "Yes." "Is one person the doer for another, does one person do happiness and suffering for another, and another experiences it?" "It should not be said thus... (and so on)..." 748. "Should it not be said – 'one person bestows happiness upon another'?" "Yes." "Did not Venerable Udāyī say this – 'Truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the remover of suffering states, truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the bringer of happy states, truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the remover of unwholesome states, truly, for many of us, the Blessed One is the bringer of wholesome states'?" "by means of this mind" Does that mind know? Yes. Does that mind know that mind as "mind" by means of that mind? It should not be said thus (etc.). Does that mind know that mind as "mind" by means of that mind? Yes. Is that mind an object of that mind? It should not be said thus (etc.). Is that mind an object of that mind? Yes. Does one touch that touch by means of that touch? By means of that feeling (etc.)? By means of that perception? By means of that volition? By means of that mind? By means of that initial application? By means of that sustained application? By means of that joy? By means of that mindfulness? Does one know that wisdom by means of that wisdom? It should not be said thus (etc.). 750. Does one, attending to the past as "past," attend to the future as "future"? It should not be said thus (etc.). Does one, attending to the past as "past," attend to the future as "future"? Yes. Is there a conjunction of two touches (etc.)? Of two minds? It should not be said thus (etc.). Does one, attending to the past as "past," attend to the present as "present"? It should not be said thus (etc.). Does one, attending to the past as "past," attend to the present as "present"? Yes. Is there a conjunction of two touches (etc.)? Of two minds? It should not be said thus (etc.). Does one, attending to the past as "past," attend to the future as "future," and attend to the present as "present"? It should not be said thus (etc.).
