Was it not said by the Blessed One: "Here, monks, a bhikkhu, having seen a form with the eye, is a seizer of its features... ...is not a seizer of its features; having heard a sound with the ear... ...having cognized a dhamma with the mind, is a seizer of its features... ...is not a seizer of its features"? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then both restraint and non-restraint are kamma. The discussion on "Restraint is kamma" is finished. 12. The Twelfth Chapter (117) 2. Discussion on Kamma 633. Is all kamma with result? Yes. Is all volition with result? It should not be said so... ...Is all volition with result? Yes. Is resultant-indeterminate volition with result? It should not be said so... ...Is all volition with result? Yes. Functional-indeterminate volition with result? It should not be said so... Is all volition with result? Yes. Is sense-sphere resultant-indeterminate volition with result? It should not be said so... ...Is all volition with result? Yes. Is form-sphere, formless-sphere, unincluded resultant-indeterminate volition with result? It should not be said so... Is all volition with result? Yes. Is sense-sphere functional-indeterminate volition with result? It should not be said so... ...Is all volition with result? Yes. Is form-sphere, formless-sphere functional-indeterminate volition with result? It should not be said so... 634. Is resultant-indeterminate volition without result? Yes. If resultant-indeterminate volition is without result, then truly it should not be said: "All volition is with result." Is functional-indeterminate volition without result? Yes. If functional-indeterminate volition is without result, then truly it should not be said: "All volition is with result." Is sense-sphere, form-sphere, formless-sphere, unincluded resultant-indeterminate volition without result? Yes. If unincluded resultant-indeterminate volition is without result, then truly it should not be said: "All volition is with result." Sense-sphere, form- Are formless realm, functional, indeterminate volitions without result? Yes. If formless realm, functional, indeterminate volitions are without result, then it should not be said – "All volitions have results." 635. Should it not be said – "All kamma has results"? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One – "Monks, I do not declare the cessation of volitional kamma, done and accumulated, without experiencing its result, and that arises either in this very life or in some other occasion"? Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then all kamma has results. The discussion on Kamma is concluded. 12. The Twelfth Chapter (118) 3. Discussion on Sound as a Result 636. Is sound a result? Yes. Is it pleasant-feeling, painful-feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant-feeling, associated with pleasant feeling, associated with painful feeling, associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, associated with contact, associated with feeling, associated with perception, associated with volition, associated with consciousness, with an object; does it have turning towards, attention, application, advertence, volition, aspiration, resolve? It should not be said so… (abbreviated) Is it not not pleasant-feeling, not painful-feeling… (abbreviated) …without an object, does it not have turning towards… (abbreviated) …resolve? Yes. If it is not pleasant-feeling… (abbreviated) …without an object, does not have turning towards… (abbreviated) …resolve, then it should not be said – "Sound is a result." Is contact a result? Is contact pleasant-feeling… (abbreviated) …with an object, does it have turning towards… (abbreviated) …resolve? Yes. Is sound a result? Is sound pleasant-feeling… (abbreviated) …with an object, does it have turning towards… (abbreviated) …resolve? It should not be said so… (abbreviated). Is sound a result? Is sound not pleasant-feeling… (abbreviated) …without an object, does it not have turning towards… (abbreviated) …resolve? Yes. Is contact a result? Is contact not pleasant-feeling, not painful-feeling… (abbreviated) …without an object, does it not have turning towards… ...etc. aspiration? It should not be said thus...etc. 637. Should it not be said – "Sound is a result"? Yes. Was it not said by the Blessed One – "Because of the doing, accumulating, heaping up, and expanding of that kamma, he has a divine voice, speaking like a karavika bird" [in the Dīgha Nikāya]! Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then sound is a result. The discussion on "sound is a result" is finished. 12. Twelfth Chapter (119) 4. Discussion on the Six Sense Bases 638. Is the eye-base a result? Yes. Is it experienced as pleasant, experienced as painful...etc... with an object, does it have a turning back...etc... aspiration? It should not be said thus...etc. Is it not not experienced as pleasant...etc... without an object, does it not have a turning back...etc... aspiration? Yes. If it is not experienced as pleasant...etc... without an object, it has no turning back...etc... aspiration, then it should certainly not be said – "The eye-base is a result"...etc. Is contact a result, is contact experienced as pleasant...etc... with an object, does it have a turning back...etc... aspiration? Yes. Is the eye-base a result, is the eye-base experienced as pleasant...etc... with an object, does it have a turning back...etc... aspiration? It should not be said thus...etc. Is the eye-base a result, is the eye-base not experienced as pleasant...etc... without an object, does it have no turning back...etc... aspiration? Yes. Is contact a result, is contact not experienced as pleasant...etc... without an object, does it have no turning back...etc... aspiration? It should not be said thus...etc. 639. Is the ear-base...etc... the nose-base...etc... the tongue-base...etc... the body-base a result? Yes. Is it experienced as pleasant...etc... with an object, does it have a turning back...etc... aspiration? It should not be said thus...etc. Is it not not experienced as pleasant...etc... without an object, does it not have a turning back...etc... aspiration? Yes. If it is not experienced as pleasant...etc... without an object, it has no turning back...etc... aspiration, then it should certainly not be said – "The body-base is a result." Is contact a result, is contact experienced as pleasant...etc... with an object... Mind, is there a turning back for it... or a wish? Yes. The body-base is a result, the body-base is pleasant-feeling... with an object, is there a turning back for it... or a wish? It should not be said thus... The body-base is a result, the body-base is not pleasant-feeling... without an object, is there no turning back for it... or a wish? Yes. Contact is a result, contact is not pleasant-feeling... without an object, is there no turning back for it... or a wish? It should not be said thus... 640. Should it not be said: "The six sense-bases are a result"? Yes. Are not the six sense-bases arisen due to the doing of kamma? Yes. If the six sense-bases are arisen due to the doing of kamma, then indeed it should be said: "The six sense-bases are a result." The discourse on the six sense-bases is concluded. 12. The Twelfth Chapter (120) 5. Discourse on the One who Reaches the Limit in Seven Lives 641. Is the person who reaches the limit in seven lives fixed in reaching the limit in seven lives? Yes. Is the mother deprived of life... the father deprived of life... an Arahant deprived of life... the Tathāgata's blood caused to flow with malicious intent... the Saṅgha split? It should not be said thus... Is the person who reaches the limit in seven lives fixed in reaching the limit in seven lives? Yes. Is he unable to realize the Dhamma in between?
