7. Seventh Chapter (63) 1. Discourse on Inclusion 471. Are there no phenomena included in any phenomena? Yes. But are there not some phenomena that fall into the reckoning fall into the designation are comprised by some phenomena? Yes. If there are some phenomena that fall into the reckoning fall into the designation are comprised by some phenomena, then it should not be said: "There are no phenomena included in any phenomena." Into which aggregate's reckoning does the eye-base fall? It falls into the reckoning of the form aggregate. If the eye-base falls into the reckoning of the form aggregate, then it should be said: "The eye-base is included in the form aggregate." Into which aggregate's reckoning do the ear-base, the nose-base, the tongue-base, the body-base fall? They fall into the reckoning of the form aggregate. If the body-base falls into the reckoning of the form aggregate, then it should be said: "The body-base is included in the form aggregate." Into which aggregate's reckoning do the form-base, the sound-base, the smell-base, the taste-base, the touch-base fall? They fall into the reckoning of the form aggregate. If the touch-base falls into the reckoning of the form aggregate, then it should be said: "The touch-base is included in the form aggregate." Into which aggregate's reckoning does pleasant feeling fall? It falls into the reckoning of the feeling aggregate. If pleasant feeling falls into the reckoning of the feeling aggregate, then it should be said: "Pleasant feeling is included in the feeling aggregate." Into which aggregate's reckoning do painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling fall? They fall into the reckoning of the feeling aggregate. If neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling falls into the reckoning of the feeling aggregate, then it should be said: "Neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is included in the feeling aggregate." Perception born of eye-contact, into which aggregate group does it go? It goes into the perception aggregate group. If perception born of eye-contact goes into the perception aggregate group, then indeed it should be said: "Perception born of eye-contact is included in the perception aggregate." Perception born of ear-contact… (and so on)… perception born of mind-contact, into which aggregate group does it go? It goes into the perception aggregate group. If perception born of mind-contact goes into the perception aggregate group, then indeed it should be said: "Perception born of mind-contact is included in the perception aggregate." Volition born of eye-contact… (and so on)… volition born of mind-contact, into which aggregate group does it go? It goes into the volitional formations aggregate group. If volition born of mind-contact goes into the volitional formations aggregate group, then indeed it should be said: "Volition born of mind-contact is included in the volitional formations aggregate." Eye-consciousness… (and so on)… mind-consciousness, into which aggregate group does it go? It goes into the consciousness aggregate group. If mind-consciousness goes into the consciousness aggregate group, then indeed it should be said: "Mind-consciousness is included in the consciousness aggregate." 472. Just as two oxen are bound by a rope or a yoke, almsfood is contained in a net, a dog is held by a leash; in the same way, are these phenomena included in those phenomena? If two oxen are bound by a rope or a yoke, almsfood is contained in a net, a dog is held by a leash, then indeed it should be said: "There are some phenomena included in some phenomena." The discourse on inclusion is concluded. 7. The Seventh Chapter (64) 2. The discourse on association 473. Are there no phenomena associated with some phenomena? Yes, there are. Are there not some phenomena that are conascent, co-arisen with some phenomena, co- Are they conjoined, of one arising, of one ceasing, of one basis, of one object? Yes. If there are some phenomena that are accompanied by, co-arisen with, conjoined with, of one arising, of one ceasing, of one basis, of one object with certain other phenomena, then it should not be said that there are no phenomena associated with certain other phenomena. Is the feeling aggregate co-arisen with the perception aggregate? Yes. If the feeling aggregate is co-arisen with the perception aggregate, then it should be said that the feeling aggregate is associated with the perception aggregate. Is the feeling aggregate co-arisen with the volitional formations aggregate... the consciousness aggregate? Yes. If the feeling aggregate is co-arisen with the consciousness aggregate, then it should be said that the feeling aggregate is associated with the consciousness aggregate. Is the perception aggregate... the volitional formations aggregate... the consciousness aggregate co-arisen with the feeling aggregate... the perception aggregate... the volitional formations aggregate? Yes. If the consciousness aggregate is co-arisen with the volitional formations aggregate, then it should be said that the consciousness aggregate is associated with the volitional formations aggregate. 474. Just as oil is pervaded and penetrated in sesame seeds, just as juice is pervaded and penetrated in sugarcane; are those phenomena likewise pervaded and penetrated by those other phenomena? It should not be said so... (and so on). The discourse on Association is concluded. 7. The Seventh Chapter (65) 3. The discourse on Mental Factors 475. Are there no mental factors? Yes. Are there not some phenomena that are accompanied by, co-arisen with, conjoined with, associated with, of one arising, of one ceasing, of one basis, of one object with consciousness? Yes. If there are some phenomena that are accompanied by, co-arisen with, conjoined with, associated with, of one arising, of one ceasing, of one basis, of one object with consciousness, then it should not be said that there are no mental factors. Is contact co-arisen with consciousness? Yes. If contact is co-arisen with consciousness, then it should be said that contact is a mental factor. Feeling... (and so on)... perception... volition... faith... energy... mindfulness... concentration… wisdom… greed… hatred… delusion… …and shamelessness arise together with consciousness? Yes. If shamelessness arises together with consciousness, then surely it should be said: “Shamelessness is a mental concomitant.” 476. Because they arise together with consciousness, are they mental concomitants? Yes. Because they arise together with contact, are they contact-concomitants? Yes. Because they arise together with consciousness, are they mental concomitants? Yes. Because they arise together with feeling… perception… volition… faith… energy… mindfulness… concentration… wisdom… greed… hatred… delusion… …and shamelessness, are they shamelessness-concomitants? Yes. 477. Is there no mental concomitant phenomenon? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: “For one who has understood That consciousness and mental concomitant phenomena Are non-self, Having known both the inferior and the excellent, The perfectly seeing one knows The nature of decay.” Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then there is a mental concomitant phenomenon. Is there no mental concomitant phenomenon? Yes. Has it not been said by the Blessed One: “Here, Kevatta, a monk reveals the consciousness of other beings, other individuals, he reveals their mental concomitants, he reveals their thoughts, he reveals their reflections— ‘Thus is your mind, such is your mind, this is your consciousness.’” Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then there is a mental concomitant phenomenon. The discussion on mental concomitants is concluded. 7. The Seventh Chapter (66) 4. The Discussion on Giving 478. Is giving a mental concomitant phenomenon? Yes. Is it possible to give a mental concomitant phenomenon to others? It should not be said so… …Is it possible to give a mental concomitant phenomenon to others? Yes. Is it possible to give contact to others? It should not be said so… …Is it possible to give feeling… …perception… volition… faith… energy… mindfulness… concentration… wisdom to others? It should not be said so… 479. Should it not be said: “Giving is a mental concomitant phenomenon”? Yes. Is giving an undesirable result, an unlovely result, an unpleasant result, a result that leads to suffering… is of painful result? It should not be said thus… …Indeed, is not giving of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unmixed fruit, of pleasant outcome, of pleasant result? Yes. If giving is of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unmixed fruit, of pleasant outcome, of pleasant result, then indeed it should be said: “A mental phenomenon is giving.” Giving is said by the Blessed One to be of desirable fruit. Is a robe giving? Yes. Is a robe of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unmixed fruit, of pleasant outcome, of pleasant result? It should not be said thus… …Giving is said by the Blessed One to be of desirable fruit. Is almsfood, lodging, medicine and requisites for the sick giving? Yes. Is medicine and requisites for the sick of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unmixed fruit, of pleasant outcome, of pleasant result? It should not be said thus… 480. Should it not be said: “A mental phenomenon is giving”? Yes. Indeed, was it not said by the Blessed One: “Faith, shame, and wholesome giving, These are the qualities followed by good people; This indeed they call the divine path, By this indeed one goes to the world of devas.” Is there such a discourse? Yes. Then indeed, a mental phenomenon is giving. Should it not be said: “A mental phenomenon is giving”? Yes.
