whose fetters of existence are utterly destroyed, liberated by right knowledge. This is the accomplished stage. For the Arahant, this is the Nibbāna element with residue remaining. With the exhaustion of his life, the cessation of his life faculty, this suffering ceases, and other suffering does not arise. That cessation and appeasement of this suffering, and the non-arising of other (suffering), this is the Nibbāna element without residue remaining. These are the two Nibbāna elements. Thus, the truths have been stated. The comprehension of the truths has been stated. The classification of defilements has been stated. The abandonment has been stated. The stages have been stated. The fruits have been stated. The Nibbāna elements have been stated. Thus, with these stated, all enlightenment has been stated. Here, effort should be made. 71. What then are the nine successive attainments? The four jhānas, the four formless attainments, and the attainment of cessation. What then are the four jhānas? Here... And, monks, [See in the Dīgha Nikāya] 'A monk, quite secluded from sensual pleasures' should be elaborated. Among these, what are the four formless attainments? 'Dispassionate indeed' up to the attainment of cessation should be elaborated. These are the nine progressive attainments. Among these, what is the first jhāna? Disconnected from five factors, endowed with five factors. From which five factors is it disconnected? From the five hindrances. Among these, what are the five hindrances? Sensual desire should be elaborated. Among these, what is sensual desire? That desire-passion, affection, delight, clinging, wish, infatuation, longing, non-renunciation, underlying tendency, obsession regarding the five strands of sensuality, this is the hindrance of sensual desire. Among these, what is the hindrance of ill-will? That resentment towards beings and formations... (and so on) ...as in hatred, so in its manifestation, this is the hindrance of ill-will. Among these, what is torpor? That dullness of mind, heaviness of mind, unworkability of mind, sluggishness of mind, sleepiness, drowsiness, nodding off, dozing, this is torpor. Among these, what is sloth? That sluggishness of body, dullness of body, heaviness of body, lack of energy of body, this is sloth. Thus, this sloth and the preceding torpor, these two are called the hindrance of sloth and torpor. Among these, what is restlessness? That uncalmness of mind, this is restlessness. Among these, what is remorse? That mental scratching, annoyance, vexation, heart-scratching, regret, this is remorse. Thus, this remorse and the preceding restlessness, these two are called the hindrance of restlessness and remorse. Among these, what is the hindrance of doubt? That doubt concerning the Buddha, or the Dhamma, or the Saṅgha... (and so on) ...this is doubt. Moreover, there are five kinds of doubt: doubt obstructing immediate results, doubt obstructing rebirth in a good destination, doubt obstructing attainment, doubt obstructing the path, doubt obstructing heaven. These are the five kinds of doubt. Here, however, the doubt obstructing attainment is intended. ā. These are the five hindrances. Here, what is the meaning of the word "hindrances"? From what do they hinder? They hinder from all that is wholesome. How do they hinder? Sensual desire hinders from the unlovely, ill-will hinders from loving-kindness, sloth hinders from tranquility, torpor hinders from the arousal of energy, restlessness hinders from calm, remorse hinders from freedom from regret, doubt hinders from wisdom, from dependent origination. Another way. Sensual desire hinders from non-greed, from the root of skillfulness, ill-will hinders from non-hatred, sloth and torpor hinder from concentration, restlessness and remorse hinder from mindfulness foundations, doubt hinders from non-delusion, from the root of skillfulness. Another way. Three abodes: the divine abode, the Brahma abode, the noble abode. The divine abode is the four jhānas, the Brahma abode is the four immeasurables, the noble abode is the thirty-seven factors of awakening. Here, sensual desire, restlessness, and remorse hinder the divine abode, ill-will hinders the Brahma abode, sloth, torpor, and doubt hinder the noble abode. Another way. Sensual desire, ill-will, and restlessness and remorse hinder calm, sloth, torpor, and doubt hinder insight, therefore they are called hindrances. The first jhāna is dissociated from these five factors. With which five factors is the first jhāna associated? With initial application, sustained application, rapture, pleasure, and one-pointedness of mind. The attainment and acquisition of these five factors, the realization, is called the attainment of the first jhāna. One dwells having produced these five factors, therefore it is said, "one dwells having entered the first jhāna," by the divine abode. Here, the second jhāna is endowed with four factors: rapture, pleasure, one-pointedness of mind, and internal assurance, these four factors having produced and perfected these, he dwells. By that it is said, he dwells having attained the second jhāna. Therein, the third jhāna endowed with five factors: with mindfulness, clear comprehension, pleasure, one-pointedness of mind, and equanimity. Having produced and perfected these five factors, he dwells. By that it is said, he dwells having attained the third jhāna. Therein, the fourth jhāna is endowed with four factors: with equanimity, purity of mindfulness, feeling that is neither painful nor pleasant, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth jhāna is endowed with these four factors. Thus, the production, acquisition, endowment, and realization of these four factors is called the attainment of the fourth jhāna. Having produced, perfected, and attained these four jhānas, he dwells. By that it is said, he dwells with a divine dwelling. Therein, what is the meaning of impermanence? The meaning of oppression is impermanence. The meaning of dissolution, the meaning of passing away, the meaning of separation is impermanence. This is the meaning of impermanence. Therein, what is the meaning of suffering? The meaning of oppression is suffering. The meaning of affliction, the meaning of agitation, the meaning of sickness. This is the meaning of suffering. Therein, what is the meaning of emptiness? The meaning of unattached is emptiness. The meaning of not being part of, the meaning of gone beyond, the meaning of turning away. This is the meaning of emptiness. Therein, what is the meaning of non-self? The meaning of not being master is non-self. The meaning of not being subject to control, the meaning of not acting according to one's will, the meaning of being separate. This is the meaning of non-self. The collection of meanings of the suttas, the section on the basket of the path of becoming, is completed.
