or in a fortnight, or in a day, or in a moment, by this negligence or by this diligence. These are the two knowledges of the Blessed One – the knowledge of recollecting past lives and the divine eye, the eighth and ninth powers of the Tathāgata. Thus, there, that omniscience attained, all phenomena understood, stainless, free from defilement, the arisen knowledge of omniscience, Māra vanquished at the root of the Bodhi tree, this is the tenth power of the Blessed One, the knowledge of the destruction of all taints. For the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are endowed with ten powers. The analysis of the method of extraction is concluded. 3. The Method of Extraction by Reasonableness 65. What, then, is the method of extraction by reasonableness? ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, right intention is the sphere; with right view as the forerunner, having known arising and passing away; a monk who has overcome sloth and torpor, will abandon all bad destinations.’’ "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, right intention is the sphere" – it is reasonable that for one whose mind is guarded, right intention will be the sphere; it is reasonable that right intention will be right view; it is reasonable that dwelling with right view as the forerunner, one will penetrate arising and passing away; it is reasonable that penetrating arising and passing away, one will abandon all bad destinations. It is reasonable that abandoning all bad destinations, one will overcome all fears of bad destinations and states of woe. The method of extraction by reasonableness is concluded. 4. The Method of Extraction by Proximate Cause 66. What, then, is the method of extraction by proximate cause? The verse is: "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, right intention is the sphere." "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded" is the proximate cause for the three good conducts. "Right intention is the sphere" is the proximate cause for tranquility. "With right view as the forerunner" is the proximate cause for insight. "Having known arising and passing away" is for the ground of vision. This is the proximate cause. "Monks who overcome sloth and torpor" is the proximate cause of energy. "He abandons all bad destinations" is the proximate cause of development. The method of proximate causes is concluded. 5. The method of characteristics. 67. What is the method of characteristics here? The verse is: "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose domain is right resolve." "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose domain is right resolve" – this is the faculty of mindfulness. When the faculty of mindfulness is grasped, the five faculties are grasped. "With right view as the forerunner" – when right view is grasped, the Noble Eightfold Path is grasped. For what reason? From right view, right resolve arises. From right resolve, right speech arises. From right speech, right action arises. From right action, right livelihood arises. From right livelihood, right effort arises. From right effort, right mindfulness arises. From right mindfulness, right concentration arises. From right concentration, right liberation arises. From right liberation, the knowledge and vision of right liberation arises. The method of characteristics is concluded. 6. The method of the four arrays. 68. What is the method of the four arrays here? The verse is: "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose domain is right resolve." "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded" – 'guarded' means 'protected'; this is the explanation. What is the Blessed One's intention here? "Those who wish to be liberated from bad destinations will be practitioners of Dhamma" – this is the Blessed One's intention here. For Kokālika, having corrupted his mind towards the elders Sāriputta and Moggallāna, was reborn in the Great Lotus Hell. And the Blessed One is endowed with a mind guarded by mindfulness. In the Sutta it is said: "The mind should be guarded by mindfulness." The method of the four arrays is concluded. 7. The method of turning. 69. What is the method of turning here? The verse is: "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose domain is right resolve." "Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose domain is right resolve" – this is tranquility. [This is tranquility (Sī. Ka.)]. ‘‘With right view foremost’’ is insight. ‘‘Having known rise and fall’’ is the full understanding of suffering. ‘‘Monks overcoming sloth and torpor’’ is the abandoning of the origin. ‘‘He abandons all bad destinations’’ is cessation [this is cessation (Sī. Ka.)]. These are the four truths. The method of turning is applied. 8. The method of division is applied. 70. What is the method of division here? The verse is: ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right resolve.’’ The wholesome side should be indicated by the wholesome side. The unwholesome side should be indicated by the unwholesome side. The method of division is applied. 9. The method of transformation is applied. 71. What is the method of transformation here? The verse is: ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right resolve.’’ When tranquility and insight are developed, cessation is the fruit. Suffering is fully understood. The origin is abandoned. The path is developed by its opposite. The method of transformation is applied. 10. The method of synonyms is applied. 72. What is the method of synonyms here? The verse is: ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right resolve.’’ ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded’’ means mind, thought, consciousness, mind-faculty, mind-base, knowing, the state of being known; this is a synonym. ‘‘Whose range is right resolve’’ means resolve for renunciation, resolve for non-ill-will, resolve for non-harming; this is a synonym. ‘‘With right view foremost’’ means right view, that is, the weapon of wisdom, the sword of wisdom, the jewel of wisdom, the light of wisdom, the goad of wisdom, the palace of wisdom; this is a synonym. The method of synonyms is applied. 11. The method of designation is applied. 73. What is the method of designation here? The verse is: ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right resolve.’’ ‘‘Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded’’ is the designation of the proximate cause of mindfulness. ‘‘Whose range is right resolve’’ is the designation of the development of tranquility. ‘‘With right view foremost, having known rise and fall’’ is the designation of the laying down of the ground of vision. ‘‘Sloth... “Monks overcome by defilements” is the declaration of the complete abandonment of the origin. “May he abandon all evil destinies” is the declaration of the development of the path. The arrangement of the declaration method is concluded. 12. The Descent Method Arrangement 74. What therein is the descent method arrangement? “Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right intention” is the verse. “Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right intention.” “With right view as the forerunner”— when right view is grasped, the five faculties are grasped. This is descent by way of the faculties. Those same faculties are knowledge; from the arising of knowledge is the cessation of ignorance; from the cessation of ignorance is the cessation of formations; from the cessation of formations is the cessation of consciousness; thus all. This is descent by way of dependent origination. Those same five faculties are comprised in the three aggregates— the aggregate of virtue, the aggregate of concentration, the aggregate of wisdom. This is descent by way of the aggregates. Those same five faculties are included in formations. Those formations that are canker-free and not bhavanga, those formations are comprised in the element of phenomena. This is descent by way of the elements. That element of phenomena is included in the sense-sphere of phenomena, that sense-sphere which is canker-free and not bhavanga. This is descent by way of the sense-spheres. The descent method arrangement is concluded. 13. The Purification Method Arrangement 75. What therein is the purification method arrangement? “Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right intention” is the verse. Where the premise is pure, that question is resolved. But where the premise is not pure, that question is not yet resolved. The purification method arrangement is concluded. 14. The Determination Method Arrangement 76. What therein is the determination method arrangement? “Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded, whose range is right intention” is the verse. “Therefore, for one whose mind is guarded” is unity. Mind, thought, consciousness— this is diversity. “Whose range is right intention” is unity. Intention of renunciation, intention of non-ill-will, intention of non-harming— this is diversity. “With right view as the forerunner” is unity. Right view— Indeed, that knowledge of suffering, knowledge of the origin of suffering, knowledge of the cessation of suffering, knowledge of the path leading to the cessation of suffering, knowledge of the path, knowledge of the cause, knowledge of phenomena arisen from a cause, knowledge of condition, knowledge of phenomena arisen from a condition, that true knowledge and vision in each case, realization, penetration, attainment of the truths, this is distinction. Knowing rise and fall is unity, with rise, ignorance conditions volitional formations, volitional formations condition consciousness, thus everything becomes origin. With fall, cessation of ignorance leads to cessation of volitional formations, thus everything becomes cessation, this is distinction. A bhikkhu overcoming sloth and torpor is unity, sloth is the unsuitability, the unworkability of the mind, torpor is the sluggishness of the body, this is distinction. Abandoning all bad destinations is unity,
