3. The Chapter on Exposition 4. Therein, the Netti is briefly expounded. Summary of the Modes 1. Gratification, danger, and escape, and fruit, and means; And the command of the Blessed One, is the mode of teaching for yogis. 2. That which is asked and answered, and that which is the recitation of the Sutta; That which is the analysis of the Sutta, the mode is declared to be Vicaya (Investigation). 3. Of all the modes, that which is their ground and their range; The examination of what is suitable and unsuitable, the mode is declared to be Yutti (Suitability). 4. The Conqueror teaches the Dhamma, and that which is the proximate cause of that Dhamma; Thus up to all Dhammas, this mode is Padaṭṭhāna (Proximate Cause). 5. When one Dhamma is spoken of, those Dhammas which are of the same characteristic; All are spoken of, that mode is called Lakkhaṇa (Characteristic). 6. Etymology, intention, and then expression, and the origin of the teaching; The connection of prior and subsequent, this mode is Catubyūha (Fourfold Arrangement). 7. In one proximate cause, one seeks the remaining proximate causes; It revolves in the opposite direction, that mode is called Āvaṭṭa (Revolving). 8. And Dhamma, and proximate cause, and ground, this mode divides; It should be understood as Vibhatti (Division) in common and uncommon. 9. In wholesome and unwholesome Dhammas, declared, developed, and abandoned; It revolves in the opposite direction, the mode is called Parivattana (Reversal). 10. Many synonyms, indeed, spoken in the Sutta for one Dhamma; He who knows, the expert in Suttas, that mode is called Vevacana (Synonym). 11. The Blessed One teaches one Dhamma, with various designations; That aspect should be known, as the mode called Paññatti (Designation). 12. And that which is dependent origination, and faculties, aggregates, elements, sense bases; That which descends by these, that mode is called Otaraṇa (Descent). 13. In an answered question, starting from that which was asked in a verse; The examination of pure and impure, that mode is called Sodhana (Purification). 14. Dhammas by way of oneness, and those declared by way of difference; By that they should be distinguished, this mode is Adhiṭṭhāna (Determination). 15. Those Dhammas which generate which Dhamma, as conditions in succession; Having drawn out the cause, this mode is Parikkhāra (Condition). 16. Those Dhammas which have which root, which The meanings of the Cetas are revealed by the Sage; They are to be applied, this is the application method. Summary of Methods 17. Craving and ignorance, whoever leads them with tranquility and insight; Having joined them with the Truths, this method is the Joyful Turning. 18. Whoever leads the unwholesome with their roots, and the wholesome with their wholesome roots; That method, which is real, true, and unfailing, they call the Triple Lotus. 19. Whoever leads the perversions, defilements, faculties, and true Dhamma; That method, the experts in methods, call the Lion's Play. 20. Indeed, those wholesome and unwholesome things stated here and there in the expositions; Whoever observes them with the mind, that indeed they call the Directional Gaze. 21. Having observed with the directional gaze, what one lifts up and brings together; All wholesome and unwholesome things, this method is called the Hook. 22. First, the sixteen methods, having looked in the directions with the directional gaze; And having summarized with the hook, one should point out the Sutta with the three methods. Twelve Terms 23. Letter, word, expression, and likewise explanation; The sixth mode of speech, all expression is thus far. 24. Clear showing, revealing, opening up, dividing, making plain, and designation of action; By these six terms, meaning and action are pointed out. 25. And the three complete methods, and the six terms of meaning are counted; With nine terms, the meaning of the Blessed One's word is combined. 26. The nine terms of meaning, and twenty-four for the search for expression; Combining both, there are thirty-three, these are the guidances. Chapter on Explanation.
