How are the four noble truths penetrated as one in the sense of penetration? In four ways are the four noble truths penetrated as one in the sense of penetration. The sense of suffering of suffering is the sense of penetration. The sense of origin of origin is the sense of penetration. The sense of cessation of cessation is the sense of penetration. The sense of the path of the path is the sense of penetration. By these four ways, in the sense of penetration, the four noble truths are comprised as one. That which is comprised as one, that is one-ness. One-ness is penetrated by one knowledge, thus the four truths are penetrated as one. 10. In how many ways are the four truths penetrated as one? What is impermanent, that is suffering. What is suffering, that is impermanent. What is impermanent and suffering, that is non-self. What is impermanent and suffering and non-self, that is reality. What is impermanent and suffering and non-self and reality, that is truth. What is impermanent and suffering and non-self and reality and truth, that is gathered as one. What is gathered as one, that is one-ness. One-ness is penetrated by one knowledge, thus the four truths are penetrated as one. In how many ways are the four truths penetrated as one? In nine ways are the four truths penetrated as one. By way of reality, by way of non-self, by way of truth, by way of penetration, by way of direct knowledge, by way of full understanding, by way of abandonment, by way of development, by way of realization – by these nine ways are the four truths gathered as one. What is gathered as one, that is one-ness. One-ness is penetrated by one knowledge, thus the four truths are penetrated as one. How are the four truths penetrated as one by way of reality? In nine ways are the four truths penetrated as one by way of reality. The reality of suffering is the reality of suffering. The reality of origin is the reality of origin. The reality of cessation is the reality of cessation. The reality of the path is the reality of the path. The reality of direct knowledge is the reality of direct knowledge. The reality of full understanding is the reality of full understanding. The reality of abandonment is the reality of abandonment. The reality of development is the reality of development. The reality of realization is the reality of realization – by these nine ways are the four truths gathered as one by way of reality. What is gathered as one, that is one-ness. One-ness is penetrated by one knowledge, thus the four truths are penetrated as one. How are the four truths penetrated as one by way of non-self... by way of truth... by way of penetration? By twelve aspects are the Four Noble Truths penetrated as one. By the meaning of reality, by the meaning of non-self, by the meaning of truth, by the meaning of penetration, by the meaning of knowing directly, by the meaning of fully understanding, by the meaning of principle, by the meaning of reality, by the meaning of being known, by the meaning of realization, by the meaning of touching, by the meaning of comprehension – by these twelve aspects, the Four Noble Truths are unified. By sixteen aspects are the Four Noble Truths penetrated as one by the meaning of reality. The meaning of oppression for suffering, the meaning of conditioned for suffering, the meaning of torment for suffering, the meaning of change for suffering, the meaning of reality for suffering; the meaning of accumulation for origin, the meaning of cause for origin, the meaning of conjunction for origin, the meaning of hindrance for origin, the meaning of reality for origin; the meaning of escape for cessation, the meaning of seclusion for cessation, the meaning of unconditioned for cessation, the meaning of deathless for cessation, the meaning of reality for cessation; the meaning of leading out for path, the meaning of cause for path, the meaning of vision for path, the meaning of dominance for path, the meaning of reality for path – by these sixteen aspects, by the meaning of reality, the Four Noble Truths are unified. By way of penetration in sixteen aspects, the Four Noble Truths are penetrated as one. For suffering: by way of oppression, by way of conditionedness, by way of torment, by way of change, by way of penetration; for origin: by way of accumulation, by way of cause, by way of entanglement, by way of obstruction, by way of penetration; for cessation: by way of escape, by way of seclusion, by way of unconditionedness, by way of deathlessness, by way of penetration; for the path: by way of leading out, by way of cause, by way of seeing, by way of dominance, by way of penetration – by these sixteen aspects, by way of penetration, the Four Noble Truths are comprised as one. What is comprised as one, that is oneness. Oneness is penetrated by one knowledge – thus the Four Noble Truths are penetrated as one. 12. How many characteristics do the Truths have? The Truths have two characteristics. The characteristic of conditionedness, and the characteristic of unconditionedness – these are the two characteristics of the Truths. How many characteristics do the Truths have? The Truths have six characteristics. For the conditioned Truths, arising is discerned, passing away is discerned, the alteration of what has arisen is discerned; for the unconditioned Truth, no arising is discerned, no passing away is discerned, no alteration of what has arisen is discerned – these are the six characteristics of the Truths. How many characteristics do the Truths have? The Truths have twelve characteristics. For the Truth of Suffering, arising is discerned, passing away is discerned, the alteration of what has arisen is discerned; for the Truth of Origin, arising is discerned, passing away is discerned, the alteration of what has arisen is discerned; for the Truth of the Path, arising is discerned, passing away is discerned, the alteration of what has arisen is discerned; for the Truth of Cessation, no arising is discerned, no passing away is discerned, no alteration of what has arisen is discerned – these are the twelve characteristics of the Truths. Of the four Truths, how many are wholesome, how many are unwholesome, h How many are indeterminate? The truth of origin is unwholesome, the truth of the path is wholesome, the truth of cessation is indeterminate. The truth of suffering may be wholesome, may be unwholesome, may be indeterminate. May three truths be included in one truth, and one truth included in three truths? Yes, by way of object, by way of aspect. And how may it be so? That suffering truth is unwholesome, the origin truth is unwholesome – thus, by way of unwholesomeness, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. That suffering truth is wholesome, the path truth is wholesome – thus, by way of wholesomeness, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. That suffering truth is indeterminate, the cessation truth is indeterminate – thus, by way of indeterminacy, two truths are included in one truth, and one truth is included in two truths. Thus, three truths may be included in one truth, and one truth included in three truths, by way of object, by way of aspect. 2. Second Suttanta Text 13. "Before my enlightenment, monks, while I was still an unenlightened Bodhisatta, this thought occurred to me – ‘What is the gratification in form, what is the danger, what is the escape? What is the gratification in feeling, what is the danger, what is the escape? What is the gratification in perception, what is the danger, what is the escape? What is the gratification in volitional formations, what is the danger, what is the escape? What is the gratification in consciousness, what is the danger, what is the escape?’ Then, monks, this thought occurred to me – ‘That pleasure and joy which arises dependent on form – this is the gratification in form. That form is impermanent, that is suffering, subject to change – this is the danger in form. That discipline of desire and lust for form, that abandoning of desire and lust – this is the escape from form. That dependent on feeling...
