the Blessed One is unattached to the eye, to the ear… to the nose… to the tongue… to the body… to the mind, to forms… to sounds… to odors… to tastes… to tangibles… to family… to group… to dwelling… to gain… to fame… to praise… to pleasure… to robes… to almsfood… to lodging… to medicinal requisites for the sick… to the sense-sphere realm… to the form realm… to the formless realm… to sense-sphere existence… to form existence… to formless existence… to perception-existence… to non-perception-existence… to neither-perception-nor-non-perception-existence… to one-constituent existence… to four-constituent existence… to five-constituent existence… to the past… to the future… to the present… to things seen, heard, sensed, and cognized, unattached, unsupported, unadhering, unapproaching, unobsessed, uncommitted, gone forth, released, completely freed, disjoined, he dwells with a mind that has transcended all boundaries – that Buddha is unattached. The Blessed One is "Such" (Tādī) in five ways – "Such" in desirable and undesirable things, "Such" because he has abandoned, "Such" because he has crossed over, "Such" because he is liberated, "Such" because of that designation. How is the Blessed One "Such" in desirable and undesirable things? The Blessed One is "Such" in gain, "Such" in loss, "Such" in fame, "Such" in disrepute, "Such" in praise, "Such" in blame, "Such" in pleasure, "Such" in pain; some might smear his arm with perfume, others might cut his arm with an axe, in that, there is no passion, In him there is no aversion, He has abandoned attachment and aversion, He has transcended uplift and downfall, He has overcome agreement and disagreement. Thus the Blessed One is imperturbable in desirable and undesirable things. How is the Blessed One imperturbable by having renounced? By the Blessed One, lust is renounced, vomited, released, abandoned, cast off, hatred... delusion... anger... resentment... denigration... hypocrisy... envy... stinginess... deceit... craftiness... obstinacy... arrogance... conceit... excessive pride... intoxication... heedlessness... all defilements... all bad conduct... all anxieties... all torments... all distresses... all unwholesome volitional formations are renounced, vomited, released, abandoned, cast off. Thus the Blessed One is imperturbable by having renounced. How is the Blessed One imperturbable by having crossed over? The Blessed One has crossed the flood of sensuality, has crossed the flood of becoming, has crossed the flood of views, has crossed the flood of ignorance, has crossed the entire path of transmigration, gone beyond, completely crossed, transcended, utterly transcended, gone past. He has completed his dwelling, fulfilled his conduct, reached the end of the journey, reached the end of directions, reached the end of limits, observed the holy life, attained the highest view, developed the path, abandoned defilements, penetrated the unshakeable, realized cessation. Suffering is fully understood by him, the origin is abandoned, the path is developed, cessation is realized, what is to be directly known is directly known, what is to be fully understood is fully understood, what is to be abandoned is abandoned, what is to be developed is developed, what is to be realized is realized. He has lifted the bar, removed the moat, pulled out the stake, removed the bolt, is noble, has lowered the banner, laid down the burden, is unyoked, abandoned the five factors, endowed with the six factors, has one guard, four supports, rejected individual truths, has equanimity in all quests, has an unagitated resolve, a tranquil bodily formation, a well-liberated mind, well-liberated wisdom, is complete, has lived the holy life, is the highest person, the supreme person, one who has attained the supreme attainment. He neither accumulates nor causes to accumulate; having not accumulated, he stands, neither abandoning nor clinging; having abandoned, he stands, neither entangling nor being entangled; having disentangled, he stands, neither shaking off nor He obscures; Having dispelled, he stands. Endowed with the unexcelled aggregate of virtue, he stands. Endowed with the unexcelled aggregate of concentration, he stands. Endowed with the unexcelled aggregate of wisdom, he stands. Endowed with the unexcelled aggregate of liberation, he stands. Endowed with the unexcelled aggregate of knowledge and vision of liberation, he stands. Having fulfilled the truth, he stands. Having transcended agitation, he stands. Having consumed the fire of defilements, he stands. By non-return, he stands. Having accomplished what was to be done, he stands. By the practice of freedom, he stands. By the purity of loving-kindness, he stands. By the purity of compassion, he stands. By the purity of appreciative joy, he stands. By the purity of equanimity, he stands. By ultimate purity, he stands. By purity through non-identification, he stands. Being liberated, he stands. Being contented, he stands. At the end of the aggregates, he stands. At the end of the elements, he stands. At the end of the sense bases, he stands. At the end of destinations, he stands. At the end of rebirths, he stands. At the end of re-linking, he stands. At the end of existence, he stands. At the end of transmigration, he stands. At the end of the cycle, he stands. In the final existence, he stands. In the final body, he stands. The Blessed One, bearing the final body. “This is his last existence, This is his final body; The cycle of birth and death, There is no re-becoming for him.” Thus the Blessed One is one who has crossed over, one who is such. How is the Blessed One one who is liberated, one who is such? From lust, the Blessed One’s mind is freed, liberated, well-liberated. From hatred, his mind… From delusion, his mind… From anger… From resentment… From denigration… From dominance… From envy… From avarice… From deceit… From craftiness… From stubbornness… From arrogance… From conceit… From excessive pride… From intoxication… From heedlessness… From all defilements… From all misconduct… From all anxieties… From all torments… From all distresses… From all unwholesome volitional formations, his mind is freed, liberated, well-liberated. Thus the Blessed One is one who is liberated, one who is such. How is the Blessed One one who is designated by that, one who is such? When there is virtue, the Blessed One is virtuous; by that designation, he is such. When there is faith, he is faithful; by that designation, he is such. When there is energy, he is energetic… By that designation, he is such. When there is mindfulness, he is mindful; by that designation, he is such. When there is concentration, he is concentrated; by that designation, he is such. When there is wisdom, he is wise; by that designation, he is such. When there is knowledge, he is threefold-knowledgeable; by that designation, he is such. When there is higher knowledge, he is sixfold-higher-knowledgeable; by that designation, he is such. When there are ten powers, he has ten powers; by that designation, he is such. Thus the Blessed One is such by that designation – that Buddha, unattached, unwavering. He came without deceit. 'Without deceit' means three bases of deceit: the basis of deceit concerning the use of requisites, the basis of deceit concerning deportment, the basis of deceit concerning hinting. What is the basis of deceit concerning the use of requisites? Here, householders invite a bhikkhu with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. That bhikkhu, evil-willed, overcome by desire, longing for more of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick, rejects robes, rejects almsfood, rejects lodgings, rejects medicinal requisites for the sick. He says this: "What is a costly robe to a recluse! It is fitting that a recluse should gather rags from a charnel ground, or a rubbish heap, or a shop, and make a patched robe and wear it." "What is costly almsfood to a recluse! It is fitting that a recluse should sustain life by gleaning alms, by a lump of alms." "What is a costly lodging to a recluse! It is fitting that a recluse should be a dweller at the root of a tree, or in a charnel ground, or in the open air." "What are costly medicinal requisites for the sick to a recluse! It is fitting that a recluse should make medicine from putrid urine or a piece of myrobalan." On account of that, he wears coarse robes, he partakes of coarse almsfood, he uses coarse lodgings, he uses coarse medicinal requisites... He makes excessive use. Householders know him thus: "This ascetic is of few wishes, content, secluded, unassociated, energetic, a speaker of ascetic practices." They invite him again and again with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and requisites for the sick, including medicine. He says thus: "Through the presence of three things, a faithful householder generates much merit. Through the presence of faith, a faithful householder generates much merit. Through the presence of a gift-worthy offering, a faithful householder generates much merit. Through the presence of those worthy of offerings, a faithful householder generates much merit. And you have this faith, and an offering exists, and I am a recipient. If I do not accept, then you will be deprived of merit. I have no need of this, but out of compassion for you, I accept." Because of that, he accepts many robes, he accepts much almsfood, he accepts many lodgings, he accepts many requisites for the sick, including medicine. Such a pretense, a feigning, a deception, a deceiving, a state of being deceptive – this is the basis of deception called "making use of requisites." What is the basis of deception called "posture"? Here, some person of evil wishes, overcome by desire, with the intention of being esteemed, thinking: "Thus will people esteem me," arranges his walking, arranges his standing, arranges his sitting, arranges his lying down. He walks with a purpose,
