That which is called sexual intercourse is an ignoble practice, a village practice, a base practice, a gross practice, ending in water, secret, a two-by-two union. For what reason is it called sexual intercourse? It is a practice of two similar ones who are lustful, deeply attached, flowing with desire, overcome, with minds consumed; for that reason it is called sexual intercourse. Just as two quarrelers are called a pair, two disputants, two talkers, two involved in a legal case, two debaters, two speakers, two conversers are called a pair; just so, it is a practice of two similar ones who are lustful, deeply attached, flowing with desire, overcome, with minds consumed; for that reason it is called sexual intercourse. Adornment is of two kinds: there is adornment for a householder, there is adornment for a renunciant. What is the adornment for a householder? Sloth, deceit, laughter, play, sexual intercourse, one should abandon along with adornment. And sloth and deceit and laughter Play and sexual conduct, with adornment, with retinue, with paraphernalia, with requisites, one should abandon, dispel, make an end of, bring to naught. Sloth, delusion, laughter, play, sexual conduct, one should abandon with adornment. Therefore the Blessed One said: ‘‘One should not indulge in sleep, one should cultivate wakefulness, ardent; Sloth, delusion, laughter, play, sexual conduct, one should abandon with adornment.’’ 162. Atharvan magic, dreams, omens, one should not practice, nor astrology; Bird cries, conception rituals, medicine, my follower should not resort to. Atharvan magic, dreams, omens, one should not practice, nor astrology. Atharvan practitioners employ Atharvan magic, when a city is besieged, or when battle is imminent, against enemy armies, adversaries, foes, they cause calamity, they cause distress, they cause sickness, they cause fever, they cause pain, they cause cholera, they cause dysentery. Whoever sees a dream in the evening, such is the result. Whoever in the first watch... whoever in the middle watch... whoever in the last watch... whoever lies on their right side... whoever lies on their left side... whoever lies supine... whoever lies prone... whoever sees the moon... whoever sees the sun... whoever sees the great ocean... whoever sees Sineru, the king of mountains... whoever sees an elephant... whoever sees a horse... whoever sees a chariot... whoever sees infantry... whoever sees a battle array... whoever sees a delightful park... whoever sees a delightful forest... whoever sees delightful land... whoever sees a delightful pond, such is the result.’ Thus dream interpreters declare dreams. Or rather, one should not take up, nor learn, nor hold, nor consider, nor observe, nor employ. Atharva-lore, dreams, marks, one should not practice, nor constellations. And animal cries, and causing conception, and medicine, my follower should not resort to. Animal cries are called the speech of animals. Readers of animal speech declare animal speech. And those monks, Monks, are far removed from this Dhamma-Vinaya, and those monks do not attain growth, increase, and fullness in this Dhamma-Vinaya. But, Monks, those monks who are not deceitful, not talkative, wise, not stubborn, well-concentrated, those monks, Monks, are dear to me, and those monks, Monks, are not far removed from this Dhamma-Vinaya, and those monks attain growth, increase, and fullness in this Dhamma-Vinaya.” “Deceitful, stubborn, talkative, boastful, Arrogant, unconcentrated; They do not grow in the Dhamma, Taught by the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. “Not deceitful, not talkative, wise, Not stubborn, well-concentrated; They indeed grow in the Dhamma, Taught by the Perfectly Self-Awakened One.” Omens, conception-practices, and medicine, a devoted one should not engage in. A devoted one should not engage in, not resort to, not associate with, not practice, not follow, not undertake, not live by omens, conception-practices, and medicine. Or, should not grasp, not learn, not hold, not bear in mind, not discern, not apply – omens, conception-practices, and medicine, a devoted one should not engage in.
