A peaceful one, not relying on existence, does not yearn. "Not by view, not by tradition, not by knowledge" means. Even by what is seen, Purity, purification, complete purification, Liberation, complete liberation, ultimate liberation, You do not say, you do not declare, You do not speak, you do not explain, You do not use (the term); Even by what is heard, Purity, purification, complete purification, Liberation, complete liberation, ultimate liberation, You do not say, you do not declare... You are not, you do not speak, you do not explain, you do not teach; by sight and hearing, purity, complete purity, perfect purity, liberation, complete liberation, perfect liberation, you do not say, you do not declare, you do not speak, you do not explain, you do not teach; by knowledge, purity, complete purity, perfect purity, liberation, complete liberation, perfect liberation, you do not say, you do not declare, you do not speak, you do not explain, you do not teach – not by sight, not by hearing, not by knowledge. "Māgaṇḍiya," the Blessed One addressed that brahmin by name. "Bhagavā" is a respectful address... ...a true designation, that is, "Bhagavā" – "Māgaṇḍiya," said the Blessed One. "Not by virtue and vows does he declare purity." By virtue, purity, complete purity, perfect purity, liberation, complete liberation, perfect liberation, you do not say, you do not declare, you do not speak, you do not explain, you do not teach; by vows, purity, complete purity, perfect purity, liberation, complete liberation, perfect liberation, you do not say, you do not declare, you do not speak, you do not explain, you do not teach; by virtue and vows, purity, complete purity, perfect purity, liberation, complete liberation, perfect liberation, you do not say, you do not declare, you do not speak, you do not explain, you do not teach – not by virtue and vows does he declare purity. Not by non-seeing, not by non-hearing, not by non-knowledge, not by non-virtue, not by non-vows, nor by that. Even right view is desirable. Ten-fold right view: there is what is given, there is what is offered, there is what is sacrificed, there is fruit and result of good and bad deeds, there is this world, there is the other world, there is mother, there is father, there are spontaneously arisen beings, there are in the world ascetics and brahmins who are rightly gone, rightly practiced, who having themselves realized and directly known this world and the other world, declare it. Even hearing is desirable: the voice of another, discourses, mixed prose and verse, expositions, verses, inspired utterances, 'thus-saids', birth stories, wonderful phenomena, questions and answers. Even knowledge is desirable: knowledge of kamma as one's own, knowledge conforming to the truths, supernormal knowledge. Knowledge of non-offense. Morality is also desirable – restraint according to the Pātimokkha. Observances are also desirable – eight ascetic practices: the forest dweller's practice, the alms-round practice, the rag-robe wearer's practice, the triple-robe wearer's practice, the house-to-house alms-round practice, the one-sitting meal practice, the sitter's practice, the any-bed-any-seat practice. By not seeing, not hearing, by ignorance, by lack of morality, by lack of observances, not by that. Not merely by right view, not merely by hearing, not merely by knowledge, not merely by morality, not merely by observances does one attain inner peace. Nor without these qualities does one attain inner peace. But these qualities are requisites for attaining, reaching, touching, realizing inner peace – by not seeing, not hearing, by ignorance, by lack of morality, by lack of observances, not by that. And having abandoned these, for non-grasping. "These" means the complete eradication and abandonment of dark-sided qualities is desirable. And non-identification with wholesome qualities in the three realms is desirable. Because dark-sided qualities are abandoned by complete eradication, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future. And there is non-identification with wholesome qualities in the three realms. Even by this, one does not grasp, does not cling, does not adhere. Or, they should not be grasped, not be clung to, not be adhered to. Even so, having abandoned these, for non-grasping. Because craving, and views, and conceit are abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future. Even by this, one does not grasp, does not cling, does not adhere. Even so, having abandoned these, for non-grasping. Because meritorious volitional formations, and demeritorious volitional formations, and imperturbable volitional formations are abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future. Even by this, one does not grasp, does not cling, does not adhere. Even so, having abandoned these, for non-grasping. The peaceful one, not relying, does not yearn for existence. "Peaceful" means the cessation of craving... Calm, because hatred is appeased, because delusion is appeased, because anger is appeased, because resentment is appeased, because denigration is appeased, because domination is appeased, because jealousy is appeased, because avarice is appeased, because deceit is appeased, because craftiness is appeased, because obstinacy is appeased, because presumption is appeased, because conceit is appeased, because excessive conceit is appeased, because intoxication is appeased, because heedlessness is appeased, because all defilements are appeased, because all bad conduct is appeased, because all torments are appeased, because all fevers are appeased, because all distresses are appeased, because all unwholesome volitional formations are appeased, thoroughly appeased, completely appeased, extinguished, cooled, removed, tranquilized— thus, calm, thoroughly calm, completely calm, cooled, tranquilized— thus, calm. Not relying: There are two supports— the support of craving and the support of views. ... This is the support of craving. ... This is the support of views. Having abandoned the support of craving, having relinquished the support of views, not relying on the eye, not relying on the ear, not relying on the nose, not relying on the tongue, not relying on the body, not relying on the mind, not relying on forms, not relying on sounds, not relying on smells, not relying on tastes, not relying on tangibles, not relying on family, not relying on a group, not relying on a dwelling, not relying on gain, not relying on fame, not relying on praise, not relying on pleasure, not relying on robes, not relying on almsfood, not relying on lodging, not relying on requisites for the sick and medicine, not relying on the sense-sphere realm, not relying on the form realm, not relying on the formless realm, not relying on sense-sphere existence, not relying on form existence, not relying on formless existence, not relying on existence with perception, not relying on existence without perception, not relying on existence of neither perception nor non-perception, not relying on one-constituent existence, not relying on four-constituent existence, not relying on five-constituent existence, not relying on the past, not relying on the future, not relying on the present, not relying on things seen, heard, sensed, and cognized— not relying, not grasping, not clinging, not adhering— thus, calm, not relying. Does not yearn for existence: Should not yearn for sense-sphere existence, should not yearn for form existence, should not yearn for formless existence, should not yearn intensely, should not yearn excessively— thus, calm, not relying, does not yearn for existence. Therefore, the Blessed One said: "Not by views, not by tradition, not by knowledge, (Māgaṇḍiya, said the Blessed One) Nor by moral conduct and vows, does one declare purity; Not by non-views, non-tradition, non-knowledge, Nor by lack of moral conduct, lack of vows, is it so; Having abandoned these and not grasping them, The calm one, not relying, does not yearn for existence." 75. If indeed not views By views, not by reports, not by knowledge, [Thus Māgaṇḍiya said] Nor by virtue and vows does he declare purity; By not seeing, not hearing, not knowing, By not having virtue, not having vows, nor by that; I consider this teaching to be utterly delusive, Some attain purity by views. "If indeed not by views, not by reports, not by knowledge." By views, you do not declare purity, purification, complete purification, liberation, release, complete release; you do not teach, do not speak, do not reveal, do not express it. By reports, purity, purification, complete purification, liberation, release, complete release... By seeing and reports, purity, purification, complete purification, liberation, release, complete release... By knowledge, purity, purification, complete purification, liberation, release, complete release, you do not declare, do not teach, do not speak, do not reveal, do not express it – "If indeed not by views, not by reports, not by knowledge." "Thus Māgaṇḍiya" means "thus" is a word-junction... "Māgaṇḍiya" is the name of that brahmin... "Thus Māgaṇḍiya." "Nor by virtue and vows does he declare purity." By virtue, purity, purification, complete purification... By vows, purity, purification, complete purification... By virtue and vows, purity, purification, complete purification, liberation, release, complete release, you do not declare, do not teach, do not speak, do not reveal, do not express it – "Nor by virtue and vows does he declare purity." "By not seeing, not hearing, not knowing, by not having virtue, not having vows, nor by that." You say that seeing is desirable, you say that hearing is desirable, you say that knowledge is desirable, you are not able to affirm it absolutely, nor are you able to reject it absolutely –
