nor being completely purified, nor being released, nor being liberated, nor being completely liberated; they are inferior, very inferior, low, mean, contemptible, insignificant – thus another refutes. Being thus refuted, one rejects the Teacher, rejects the teaching of the Dhamma, rejects the Sangha, rejects the view, rejects the practice, rejects the path. Thus one rejects by another's refutation. How does one reject by not fully comprehending? Not fully comprehending virtue, one rejects virtue. Not fully comprehending vows, one rejects vows. Not fully comprehending virtue and vows, one rejects virtue and vows. Thus one rejects by not fully comprehending. "And one grasps the Dhamma." One grasps the Teacher, grasps the teaching of the Dhamma, grasps the Sangha, grasps the view, grasps the practice, grasps the path, clings to it, is firmly attached to it – "one rejects and grasps the Dhamma." Therefore the Blessed One said: "Indeed, attachments to views are not easily overcome, one should discern what is firmly grasped in the teachings; Therefore, in these attachments, a person rejects and grasps the Dhamma." 21. For the purified one, there is no view anywhere in the world, conceived in existences and non-existences; Having abandoned conceit and delusion, where would that purified one go, who is without attachment? "For the purified one, there is no view anywhere in the world, conceived in existences and non-existences." "Purified" means wisdom – that wisdom, understanding, investigation, thorough investigation, discernment of phenomena, close observation, distinguishing, further distinguishing, sagacity, skill, adroitness, analysis, thought, examination, insight, intelligence, prudence, leading, penetration, comprehension, goad, wisdom, faculty of wisdom, power of wisdom, sword of wisdom, palace of wisdom, light of wisdom, radiance of wisdom, luster of wisdom, jewel of wisdom, non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view. For what reason is wisdom called "purified"? By that wisdom, bodily Misconduct is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Misconduct of speech is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Misconduct of mind is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Lust is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Hatred is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Delusion is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Anger is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Resentment is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Denigration is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Rivalry is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Envy is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Avarice is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Deceit is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Craftiness is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Obstinacy is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Presumption is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Conceit is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Haughtiness is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Intoxication is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Heedlessness is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. All defilements, all misconducts, all agitations, all torments, all distresses, all unwholesome volitional formations are shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. For that reason, wisdom is called "cleansing." Or else, by right view, wrong view is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right intention, wrong intention is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right speech, wrong speech is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right action, wrong action is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right livelihood, wrong livelihood is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right effort, wrong effort is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right mindfulness, wrong mindfulness is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right concentration, wrong concentration is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right knowledge, wrong knowledge is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. By right liberation, wrong liberation is shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. Or else, by the Noble Eightfold Path, all defilements, all misconducts, all agitations, all torments, all distresses, all unwholesome volitional formations are shaken off, and washed, and thoroughly washed, and utterly cleansed. An Arahant is endowed with, fully endowed with, attained to, fully attained to, established in, fully established in, possessed of these cleansing qualities. Therefore, an Arahant is a cleanser. He One who has shaken off lust, one who has shaken off evil, one who has shaken off defilements, one who has shaken off feverishness— he is called 'dhono' (purified). 'Kuhiñci' means anywhere, from anything, in any place, whether internally, or externally, or both internally and externally. 'Loka' means in the world of woe... ...in the world of sense-spheres. 'Pakappitā' means two kinds of conceiving: conceiving by craving, and conceiving by views... ...this is conceiving by craving... ...this is conceiving by views. 'Bhavābhavā' means in existences and non-existences: in the existence of kamma, in renewed existence, in the existence of sense-desire; in the existence of kamma, in the existence of sense-desire, in renewed existence, in the existence of form; in the existence of kamma, in the existence of form, in renewed existence, in the existence of formlessness; in the existence of kamma, in the existence of formlessness, in renewed existence; in repeated existence, in repeated destinations, in repeated rebirths, in repeated reconnections, in repeated production of individuality. For the 'dhono' there is indeed no view conceived anywhere in the world, in existences and non-existences. For the 'dhono', anywhere in the world, and in existences and non-existences, a view conceived, imagined, constructed, established, does not exist, is not present, is not found, is not perceived. It is abandoned, uprooted, calmed, tranquilized, incapable of future arising, burnt by the fire of knowledge. Thus, for the 'dhono' there is indeed no view conceived anywhere in the world, in existences and non-existences. 'Having abandoned deceit and conceit, the 'dhono'.' Deceit is called a deceptive conduct. Here, some person, having committed misconduct by body, having committed misconduct by speech, having committed misconduct by mind, for the sake of concealing it, forms an evil wish: "May they not know me," he wishes; "May they not know me," he resolves; "May they not know me," he speaks; "May they not know me," he strives with his body. Such a deceit, trickery, fraud, deception, dishonesty, dissimulation, evasion, hiding, concealing, covering, obscuring, making not manifest, making not evident, suppression, evil action— this is called deceit. 'Māna' (conceit) means: conceit of one kind: that which is the elevation of mind. Conceit of two kinds: conceit of self-exaltation, conceit of disparaging others. Conceit of three kinds: conceit "I am superior", conceit "I am equal" Conceit of "I am." Conceit of "I am inferior." Conceit of four kinds: Generates conceit by gain. Generates conceit by fame. Generates conceit by praise. Generates conceit by pleasure. Conceit of five kinds: Generates conceit by "I am one who obtains agreeable forms." Generates conceit by "I am one who obtains agreeable sounds... and so on... odors... tastes... tangibles." Conceit of six kinds: Generates conceit by perfection of sight. By perfection of hearing... smell... taste... body... mind. Conceit of seven kinds: Conceit, Excessive conceit, Conceit of excessive conceit, Inferior conceit, Superior conceit, "I am" conceit, Wrong conceit. Conceit of eight kinds: Generates conceit by gain. Generates inferior conceit by loss. Generates conceit by fame. Generates inferior conceit by disrepute. Generates conceit by praise. Generates inferior conceit by blame. Generates conceit by pleasure. Generates inferior conceit by pain. Conceit of nine kinds: Conceit of "I am superior to a superior." Conceit of "I am equal to a superior." Conceit of "I am inferior to a superior." Conceit of "I am superior to an equal." Conceit of "I am equal to an equal." Conceit of "I am inferior to an equal." Conceit of "I am superior to an inferior." Conceit of "I am equal to an inferior." Conceit of "I am inferior to an inferior." Conceit of ten kinds: Here someone generates conceit by birth, or by clan, or by family status, or by beauty of complexion, or by wealth, or by learning, or by profession, or by craft, or by branch of knowledge, or by heard knowledge, or by ready wit, or by any other thing. Whatever such conceit, imagining, state of imagining, rising up, elevation, banner, grasping, desire for a flag of the mind – this is called conceit. Having abandoned deceit and conceit, he is purified. Purified one: having abandoned deceit and conceit, having given up, having removed, having made an end of, having brought to non-existence – having abandoned deceit and conceit, he is purified. How can he go, without attachments, the stream?
