Even developing the attainment of the dimension of infinite space, he avoids sensual pleasures by suppression. Even developing the attainment of the dimension of infinite consciousness, he avoids sensual pleasures by suppression. Thus, completely abandoning desires – is he who abandons desires. "As if the head of a snake with one's foot." A snake is called 'ahi'. For what reason is it 'sappa'? It goes by creeping, therefore 'sappa'. It goes by bending, therefore 'bhujaga'. It goes with its chest, therefore 'uraga'. It goes with its head bowed, therefore 'pannaga'. It sleeps with its head, therefore 'sarīsapa'. It sleeps in a hole, therefore 'bilāsaya'. It sleeps in a cave, therefore 'guhāsaya'. Its fangs are its weapon, therefore 'dāṭhāvudha'. Its venom is terrible, therefore 'ghoravisa'. Its tongue is twofold, therefore 'dvijivha'. It tastes with two tongues, therefore 'dvirasaññū'. Just as a person desiring to live, not desiring to die, desiring happiness, averse to suffering, would avoid, shun, keep away from, utterly avoid the head of a snake with his foot; even so, one desiring happiness, averse to suffering, should avoid, shun, keep away from, utterly avoid desires – "as if the head of a snake with one's foot." "He, being mindful, overcomes this entanglement in the world." 'He' is he who abandons desires. 'Entanglement' is called craving. It is called "Visattikā." For what reason is it "Visattikā"? It spreads, therefore "Visattikā"; It is extensive, therefore "Visattikā"; It is diffused, therefore "Visattikā"; It creeps, therefore "Visattikā"; It destroys, therefore "Visattikā"; It is deceptive, therefore "Visattikā"; Its root is poison, therefore "Visattikā"; Its fruit is poison, therefore "Visattikā"; Its consumption is poison, therefore "Visattikā"; Or, that craving is extensive and diffused in forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles; in families, groups, dwellings, gains, fame; in praise, happiness, robes, almsfood, lodgings, medicinal requisites for the sick; in the sense-sphere realm, the form realm, the formless realm; in the sense-sphere existence, the form existence, the formless existence; in the percipient existence, the non-percipient existence, the neither-percipient-nor-non-percipient existence; in the one-constituent existence, the four-constituent existence, the five-constituent existence; in the past, the future, the present; in things seen, heard, sensed, and cognized – therefore it is "Visattikā". And for four other reasons, he is mindful: because he is existing, he is mindful; because he is tranquil, he is mindful; because he is calmed, he is mindful; because he is endowed with tranquil states, he is mindful. Mindful by recollection of the Buddha, mindful by recollection of the Dhamma, mindful by recollection of the Saṅgha, mindful by recollection of virtue, mindful by recollection of generosity, mindful by recollection of deities, mindful by mindfulness of breathing, mindful by mindfulness of death, mindful by mindfulness of the body, mindful by recollection of peace. That which is mindfulness, recollection, counter-recollection, mindfulness, remembrance, retention, non-forgetfulness, non-confusion, mindfulness, the faculty of mindfulness, the power of mindfulness, right mindfulness, the enlightenment factor of mindfulness, the one-way path—this is called mindfulness. He who is endowed with, fully endowed with, approached, fully approached, established, fully established, possessed of this mindfulness, he is called mindful. He, being mindful, overcomes this entanglement in the world. Whether that entanglement is in the world, or that entanglement in the world, the mindful one crosses over, goes beyond, passes over, transcends, overcomes it—he, being mindful, overcomes this entanglement in the world. Therefore, the Blessed One said: Whoever avoids sensual pleasures, as a snake avoids its head being trodden upon; He, being mindful, overcomes this entanglement in the world. Fields, land, or gold, cattle, horses, slaves, servants; Women, relatives, various sensual pleasures, the man who craves after these. Fields, land, or gold. "Fields" means rice fields, paddy fields, mung bean fields, black gram fields, barley fields, wheat fields, sesame fields. "Land" means house land, granary land, front land, back land, park land, monastery land. "Gold" means what is called kahāpaṇa (coin)—fields, land, or gold. Cattle, horses, slaves, servants. "Cattle" means cows. "Horses" means animals and so forth. "Slaves" means four kinds of slaves: one born within the household, A slave bought with money, or one who goes into slavery himself, or one who goes into the state of slavery unwillingly. Some become slaves by birth, and some become slaves bought with money; And some go into slavery themselves, and some become slaves driven by fear. "Men" means three kinds of men – hired laborers, workers, dependents – cattle, horses, slaves, and servants. Women, relatives, various desires. "Women" means female possessions. "Relatives" means four kinds of relatives – relatives by kinship are relatives, relatives by clan are relatives, relatives by counsel are relatives, relatives by craft are relatives. "Various desires" means many desires. These various desires are pleasing forms... ...pleasing tangibles – women, relatives, various desires. "Whatever man clings to." "Whatever" means whoever, of whatever kind, however engaged, however arranged, of whatever sort, having attained whatever state, endowed with whatever quality, be he a warrior or a brahmin, a merchant or a worker, a householder or a renunciant, a deity or a human. "Man" means a being, a man, a human, a person, an individual, a living being, a creature, a sentient being, a human being. "Clings to" means clings to material desires with defiling craving, clings, grasps, is entangled – whatever man clings to. Therefore the Blessed One said – "Fields, land, or gold, cattle, horses, slaves, and servants; Women, relatives, various desires, whatever man clings to." 5. The weak overpower him, dangers crush him; Then suffering follows him, like water into a broken boat. "The weak overpower him."
