Questioned by him, he explained, Mātali, charioteer of the gods; The result of evil deeds, knowing, he explained to the knower. 470. “Those in the living world, very evil-natured Righteous ones, having seized birds, they torment them. Having tormented the bird, O king, those with cruel desires, having generated evil, those people lie with severed heads. 471. "With abundant water, with banks not dug out, this river flows with good landing places. People afflicted by heat drink, and for those who drink, the water becomes very foul." 472. "Indeed, fear finds me, charioteer, seeing this, I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the gods: What evil did these mortals do, that for them the water becomes very foul?" 473. "Those impure-doers who give pure grain mixed with husks; To those afflicted by heat and thirsty, for them the water becomes very foul." 475. "With arrows, spears, and javelins, they pierce both sides of those who cry out. Indeed, fear finds me, charioteer, seeing this, I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the gods: What evil did these mortals do, that these people lie struck by spears?" 476. "Those who, in the world of living beings, are unrighteous doers, taking what is not given, make a living: Grain, wealth, silver, gold, goats, sheep, cattle, and buffalo. Those cruel-doers, having generated evil, those people lie struck by spears." 478. "Why are these others bound by the neck, and others cut up, lying in pieces? Indeed, fear finds me, charioteer, seeing this, I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the gods: What evil did these mortals do, that these people lie in pieces?" 479. Asked by him, Mātali, the charioteer of the gods, explained. Knowing the result of evil deeds, he, the knowing one, told. 480. Indeed, fear seizes me, charioteer, seeing this. I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of devas, what evil did these mortals do, that these people eat blood and pus?” 485. Questioned by him, Mātali, the charioteer of devas, explained the result of evil deeds, knowing, he told the one who knew. 486. “Whoever in this life kill a mother or a father, or kill Arahants, having committed a pārajika offense; those of cruel deeds, having produced evil, these people eat blood and pus.” 487. “And see the tongue pierced by a hook, torn like a hide by a hundred barbs; they writhe like fish thrown on dry land, they spew saliva, weeping. Who are these? 488. “Indeed, fear seizes me, charioteer, seeing this. I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of devas, what evil did these mortals do, that these people lie with crooked mouths?” 489. Questioned by him, Mātali, the charioteer of devas, explained the result of evil deeds, knowing, he told the one who knew. 490. “Whoever among people, having made an agreement, reduce the value for the sake of price; fraudulently, for the greed of wealth, like a hidden one…” For the slaughter of water-dwellers. 491. Indeed, there is no refuge for the deceiver, who is driven by his own deeds; Those of cruel deeds, having wrought evil, those people lie down, crookedly devoured. 492. Asked by him, Mātali, the deva's charioteer, explained; Knowing the result of evil deeds, he spoke, as one who knows. 495. Base women here in this living world, of impure deeds, behaved unrighteously; They, being wanton, having abandoned their husbands, behaved with others for the sake of pleasure; Having enjoyed themselves in the living world, they rise above their shoulders, shining brightly. 496. Why do these others, having seized them by the feet, cast them head downwards into hell? Fear indeed seizes me, O charioteer, having seen this, I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the devas; What evil did these mortals do, that these people are cast head downwards into hell? 497. Asked by him, Mātali, the deva's charioteer, explained; Knowing the result of evil deeds, he spoke, as one who knows. 498. Those in the living world, of unrighteous deeds, who violate others' wives; Such ones, thieves of the best treasure, those people are cast head downwards into hell. 499. They, for many years there, experience painful feeling in hells; Indeed, there is no refuge for the evil-doer, who is driven by his own deeds; Those of cruel deeds, having wrought evil, those people are cast head downwards into hell. 500. High and low, various torments, are seen in hells... These are of terrible form; Fear indeed seizes me, charioteer, seeing them, I ask you, Mātali, divine charioteer; What evil did these mortals do, that these people suffer excessive, intense, harsh, bitter feelings? 501. Asked by him, he explained, Mātali, the divine charioteer; The result of evil deeds, knowing, he told to the knower. 502. “Those who, in the world of living beings, hold very evil views, and out of delusion commit acts of treachery; And also encourage others in their views, having generated evil through evil views; These people suffer excessive, intense, harsh, bitter feelings. 503. “Known to you, great king, are the abodes of evildoers; The places of cruel deeds, and the destiny of the immoral; Now proceed, royal sage, to the presence of the king of gods.” 504. “This palace with five pinnacles is seen, adorned with garlands in the middle of a couch; There sits a woman of great power, manifesting various psychic powers. 505. “Joy indeed seizes me, charioteer, seeing her, I ask you, Mātali, divine charioteer; What good deed did this woman do, who rejoices, having attained heaven in a palace?” 506. Asked by him, he explained, Mātali, the divine charioteer; The result of meritorious deeds, knowing, he told to the knower. 507. “If you have heard of Bīraṇī in the world of living beings, she was a slave-girl of a brahmin; She, knowing a guest at the proper time, welcomed him like a mother her son; Through self-restraint and sharing, she rejoices in the palace. 508. “Shining brightly, seven palaces are created; There, a powerful yakkha, adorned with all ornaments; moves around everywhere, surrounded by a host of women. 509. “Joy indeed seizes me, charioteer, seeing him, I ask you, Mātali, divine charioteer; What good deed did this mortal do, who rejoices, having attained heaven in a palace?” 510. Asked by him, he explained, Mātali, the divine charioteer; The result of meritorious deeds, knowing who knew, he explained. 511. “The householder Soṇadinna, was a donor of gifts; He had seven monasteries built, for those who had gone forth. 512. “He respectfully attended to, the monks residing there; Clothing and food, lodging and lamps. He gave to the upright, with a mind full of faith. 513. “On the fourteenth and fifteenth, and the eighth of the fortnight; And the special fortnight, well-composed of eight factors. 514. “He observed the Uposatha, always restrained in precepts; Through self-control and sharing, he rejoices in the mansion. 515. “This mansion shines brightly, beautifully built of crystal; Filled with groups of excellent women, adorned with excellent pinnacled houses; Provided with food and drink, and both dance and song. 516. “Indeed, delight seizes me, charioteer, seeing this, I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the gods; What good did these mortals do, who rejoice in mansions attained in heaven?” 517. Questioned by him, Mātali, the charioteer of the gods, explained; Knowing the result of meritorious deeds, he explained to one who knew. 518. “Whatever women there are in this world, virtuous female lay followers; Delighting in giving, always with serene minds, established in truth, diligent in Uposatha; Through self-control and sharing, they rejoice in the mansion. 519. “This mansion shines brightly, built of lapis lazuli; Provided with ground floors, divided and measured into sections. 520. “Drums and kettledrums, dances and songs well-played; Divine sounds emanate, pleasant to hear and delightful. 521. “Never before have I known, such a beautiful sound; Neither seen nor heard. 522. “Indeed, delight seizes me, charioteer, seeing this, I ask you, Mātali, charioteer of the gods; What good did these mortals do, who rejoice in mansions attained in heaven?”
