29. Account of the Relic Distribution 1. The great Gotama, the supreme Victor, passed away in Kusinara; His relics were distributed, in various places. 2. One for Ajātasattu, one in the city of Vesālī; One in Kapilavatthu, and one in Allakappa. 3. One in Rāmagāma, and one in Veṭhadīpa; One for the Mallas of Pāvā, and one for the Mallas of Kusinārā. 4. A stupa for the urn was made, by the brahmin named Doṇa; A stupa for the embers was made, by the Moriyas, with joyful minds. 5. Eight stupas for the bodily relics, the ninth was the urn-shrine; The tenth was the ember-stupa, established right then. 6. The turban-relic, four canine teeth, and two collar-bone relics; These seven relics are unbroken, the rest of the relics are broken. 7. The large ones were the size of mung beans, the medium ones like broken rice grains; The small ones were the size of mustard seeds, and the relics were of various colors. 8. The large ones were gold-colored, the medium ones pearl-colored; The small ones were jasmine-bud-colored, amounting to sixteen measures. 9. The large ones were five nāḷis, five nāḷis were the medium ones; And six nāḷis were the small ones, these were all the relics. 10. The turban-relic in the island of Sihala, and the left collar-bone in the Brahma-world; And the right collar-bone in Sihala, all these were established. 11. One canine tooth was in the city of the thirty (devas), one was in the city of the Nāgas; One in the region of Gandhāra, one for the king of Kalinga. 12. Forty equal teeth, hairs and body-hairs everywhere; The devas took one by one, throughout the successive world-systems. 13. In Vajira, the Blessed One's bowl, staff, and robe; The lower garment in Kulaghara, the covering in Kapilavhaya. 14. In the city of Pāṭaliputta, the waist-band; In Campā, the water-strainer, and the woolly hair in Kosala. 15. The saffron robe in the Brahma-world, the head-wrap in the city of the thirty; The sitting-mat in Avanti, the covering in that country then. 16. The fire-stick in Mithilā, the water-filter in Videha; The chisel and needle-case, in Indapattha city then. 17. The remaining requisites, In the western country; What was used by the sage, people then honored. 18. The spreading of relics was, of Gotama, the great sage; Out of compassion for beings, it was ancient then. The story of the distribution of relics is finished. The Chronicle of Buddhas is finished.
