27. The Chronicle of Gotama Buddha 1. I am now the Fully Awakened One, Gotama, the Sakyan enhancer; Having striven with effort, I attained supreme enlightenment. 2. Being requested by Brahmā, I set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma; For eighteen crores (of beings), There was the first realization. 3. And thereafter, while teaching, At gatherings of humans and devas; Not to be spoken of by number, There was the second realization. 4. Right here, now, I instructed my son; Not to be spoken of by number, There was the third realization. 5. There was one assembly for me, Of great-seer disciples; Of twelve hundred and fifty, There was a gathering of monks. 6. Shining brightly, pure, Amidst the assembly of monks; I grant all that is wished for, Like a wish-fulfilling gem. 7. For those desiring the fruit, Seeking to abandon the craving for existence; I proclaim the Four Noble Truths, Out of compassion for beings. 8. For ten or twenty thousand, There was the realization of Dhamma; The realization of one or two, Is countless by number. 9. Widespread, for many people, Prosperous, flourishing, well-developed; Here, for me, the Sakya sage, The teaching is well-purified. 10. Without defilements, free from passion, With peaceful minds, well-concentrated; Hundreds of monks, all, Always surround me. 11. Now, those who at present, Abandon human existence; Learners whose minds are not yet attained, Those monks are censured by the wise. 12. And praising the Noble Ones, People always delighting in Dhamma; Mindful ones will awaken, Having gone to the river of transmigration. 13. My city was Kapilavatthu, King Suddhodana was my father; My mother who gave birth, Is called Māyādevī. 14. For twenty-nine years, I dwelt in the household life; Ramma, Suramma, Subhaka, Were my three excellent palaces. 15. Forty thousand, Adorned women; Bhaddakancanā was the name of my wife, Rāhula was the name of my son. 16. Having seen the four signs, I went forth by horse-carriage; For six years, the difficult practice of striving, I undertook. 17. In Bārāṇasī, at Isipatana, The Wheel (of Dhamma) was set in motion by me. I, Gotama, the Fully Awakened One, am a refuge for all beings. 18. Kolita and Upatissa, are two monks, chief disciples; Ananda by name, the attendant, close to me; Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā, are chief nun disciples. 19. Citta and Hatthāḷavaka, are chief lay male attendants; Nandamātā and Uttarā, are chief lay female attendants. 20. I, at the root of the Bodhi tree, attained supreme enlightenment; My aura, always, extends sixteen cubits. 21. A short hundred years of life, exists at present; While I remain for that long, I shall ferry many people across. 22. Having established the torch of Dhamma, for the awakening of future generations; I too, not long from now, together with the assembly of disciples, will here attain final Nibbāna, like a fire whose fuel is exhausted. 23. Those immeasurable powers, and these ten powers; And this body, bearer of virtues, adorned with thirty-two excellent marks. 24. Having illuminated the ten directions, like the six-rayed sun; All that will disappear, for are not all conditioned things empty? The lineage of Gotama, the Blessed One, the twenty-fifth.
