**26. The Chronicle of Kassapa Buddha** 1. After Koṇāgamana, the Fully Awakened One, supreme among bipeds; Kassapa by clan name, the King of Dhamma, the light-maker. 2. Having given up his family wealth, much food, drink, and meals; Having given gifts to beggars, having fulfilled his mind; Like a bull breaking a fence, he attained the supreme enlightenment. 3. When Kassapa, the leader of the world, set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma; There was a first realization for twenty thousand crores. 4. When the Buddha wandered in the world for four months; There was a second realization for ten thousand crores. 5. Having performed the Twin Miracle, he proclaimed the element of knowledge; There was a third realization for five thousand crores. 6. In the beautiful Sudhammā divine city, there he proclaimed the Dhamma; The Conqueror enlightened three thousand crores of devas. 7. In subsequent Dhamma teachings, to Naradeva the yakkha; The realizations of these beings are countless in number. 8. There was also one assembly of that God of gods; Of those whose defilements were destroyed, pure, with tranquil minds, such ones. 9. Then there was an assembly of twenty thousand monks; Of those who had transcended existence, such ones, with shame and virtue. 10. I was then a young brahmin, known as Jotīpāla; A reciter, a mantra-holder, one who had mastered the three Vedas. 11. In marks and history, and in the true Dhamma, I had reached perfection; Skilled in earth and sky, accomplished in knowledge, blameless. 12. The Blessed Kassapa's attendant was named Ghaṭīkāra; Respectful, reverent, attained to the third fruit. 13. Ghaṭīkāra, taking me, approached Kassapa the Conqueror; Having heard his Dhamma, I went forth in his presence. 14. Having aroused energy, skilled in what is proper and improper; I never fell short anywhere, I fulfilled the Conqueror's teaching. 15. As much as was spoken by the Buddha, the nine-fold teaching of the Conqueror; Having mastered all of it, I adorned the Conqueror's teaching. 16. Seeing my wonder, that Buddha also declared; "In this auspicious eon, this one will become a Buddha. 17. "He was k From the beautiful Apilavha, the Tathāgata departed; Having striven with exertion, having performed difficult deeds. 18. At the foot of the Ajapāla tree, the Tathāgata will sit; There, having received milk-rice, he will approach the Nerañjarā. 19. On the bank of the Nerañjarā, having consumed the milk-rice; By the prepared excellent path, he will approach the root of the Bodhi tree. 20. Then, having circumambulated the supreme Bodhimaṇḍa; At the undefeated spot, on the excellent Bodhi-seat; Seated cross-legged, the greatly renowned one will awaken. 21. His mother who gave him birth, will be named Māyā; His father will be named Suddhodana, this one will be Gotama. 22. Without defilements, free from craving, with peaceful minds, composed; Kolita and Upatissa, will be the chief disciples; Ānanda by name, the attendant, will attend this Conqueror. 23. Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā, will be the chief female disciples; Without defilements, with peaceful minds, free from craving, composed; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, is called Assattha. 24. Citta and Hatthāḷavaka, will be the chief male lay attendants; Nandamātā and Uttarā, will be the chief female lay attendants. 25. Having heard this speech, of the great sage Assama; Humans and devas rejoiced, "Indeed, this is a Buddha-seed!" 26. Shouts of joy arose, they clapped their hands and laughed; With joined palms they paid homage, the ten thousand worlds with their devas. 27. "If we miss the teaching, of this Lord of the world; In the future time, we will be face to face with him. 28. Just as people crossing a river, having missed the landing place; Take hold of a landing place downstream, and cross the great river. 29. Even so, all of us, if we miss this Conqueror; In the future time, we will be face to face with him." 30. Having heard his speech, I further purified my mind; I undertook an even greater vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 31. Thus I wandered through existence, avoiding unwholesome conduct; And difficult deeds were done by me, for the sake of awakening. City Bārāṇasī by name, Kikī was the king; There in that city lived, The Great Family of the Fully Awakened One. The brahmin Brahmadatta, Was the father of that Buddha; Dhanavatī by name was the mother, Of Kassapa, the Great Seer. Two thousand years, He lived in a household life; Haṃsa, Yasa, Sirinanda, Were his three excellent palaces. Thirty-six thousand, Women adorned him; Sunandā by name was that woman, Vijitasena by name was his son. Having seen the four signs, He went forth from the palace; For seven days, the supreme man, Practiced strenuous exertion. Being entreated by Brahmā, Kassapa, the leader of the world; The Great Hero set in motion the Wheel, The supreme man in Migadāya. Tissa and Bhāradvāja, Were his chief disciples; Sabbamitta by name was the attendant, Of Kassapa, the Great Seer. Anuḷā and Uruvelā, Were his chief female disciples; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, Is called the Nigrodha. Sumaṅgala and Ghaṭikāra, Were his chief male lay followers; Vicitasenā and Bhaddā, Were his chief female lay followers. In height that Buddha, Was twenty ratanas tall; Like a lightning flash in the sky, Like the moon full of stars. Twenty thousand years, Was the life span of that Great Seer; Remaining for that long, He saved many people. Having built a pond of Dhamma, Having given virtue as an unguent; Having put on the Dhamma-robe, Having distributed the Dhamma-garland. Having placed the pure mirror of Dhamma, Among the great multitude; Let some who aspire to Nibbāna, See my adornment. Having given the breastplate of virtue, Armored with the cuirass of jhāna; Having put on the Dhamma-hide, Having given the supreme armor. Having given the shield of mindfulness, With the spear of sharp knowledge; Having given the excellent sword of Dhamma, Crushing the defilements of virtue. Having given the ornament of the three knowledges, The diadem of the four fruits; Having given the adornment of the six supernormal powers, The garland of Dhamma flowers. Having given the white parasol of the True Dhamma, Warding off evil; Having created the flower of fearlessness, he, with his disciples, was extinguished. 49. This indeed is the Perfectly Enlightened One, immeasurable, invincible; This indeed is the jewel of the Dhamma, well-proclaimed, inviting one to come and see. 50. This indeed is the jewel of the Saṅgha, of good conduct, unsurpassed; All that has vanished, surely all formations are empty. 51. Mahākassapa, the Conqueror, the Teacher, attained Nibbāna in the Setabyārāma; There indeed was his stupa of the Conqueror, rising up a yojana in height. The twenty-fourth lineage of Kassapa, the Blessed One.
