24. The Chronicle of Kakusandha Buddha 1. After Vessabhu, the Fully Awakened One, supreme among two-footed beings; Kakusandha by name, immeasurable, unassailable. 2. Having opened up all existence, he reached the perfection of conduct; Like a lion breaking a cage, he attained supreme enlightenment. 3. When the Wheel of Dhamma was set in motion, by Kakusandha, the leader of the world; For forty thousand crores (of beings), there was an understanding of the Dhamma. 4. In the sky, in the atmosphere, having performed the Twin Miracle; For thirty thousand crores (of beings), he enlightened gods and humans. 5. For the yakka Naradeva, at the proclamation of the Four Noble Truths; His understanding of the Dhamma was immeasurable by count. 6. For the Blessed One Kakusandha, there was one assembly; Of those whose defilements were destroyed, pure, with peaceful minds, such ones. 7. For forty thousand (monks), there was that assembly; Who had attained the stage of self-control, and destroyed the host of defilement-enemies. 8. At that time, I was a khattiya named Khema; To the Tathāgata, the son of the Victor, having given an immense gift. 9. Having given a bowl and a robe, collyrium and a tooth-stick; All these things desired, I prepared, excellent and choice. 10. That Buddha also declared concerning me, Kakusandha, the leader; "In this auspicious eon, this one will become a Buddha. 11. "From the delightful Kapilavhaya...etc... we shall be face to face with this." 12. Having heard his words, I further gladdened my mind; I undertook a higher vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 13. The city was named Khemāvatī, I was named Khema then; Seeking omniscience, I went forth (as a monk) in his presence. 14. And the brahmin Aggidatta, he was the Buddha's father; Visākhā by name was the mother, of Kakusandha, the Teacher. 15. Dwelling there in the city of Khema, was the great family of the Fully Awakened One; Excellent and supreme among humans, of noble birth, of great renown. 16. For four thousand years, he dwelt in the household life; Kāma, Kāmavaṇṇa, Kāmasuddhi by name [or Suci, Suruci, Rativaddhana by name (Sī.)], were his three excellent palaces. 17. Sam Thirty thousand, women adorned; Rocinī was that woman, Uttara was the son. 18. Seeing the four signs, he went forth by chariot; For not less than eight months, the Conqueror strove in exertion. 19. Being requested by Brahmā, Kakusandha the leader; The great hero set the wheel in motion, the supreme man in Migadāya. 20. Vidhura and Sañjīva, were the chief disciples; Buddhija was the attendant, of Kakusandha the Teacher. 21. Sāmā and Campā, were the chief female disciples; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, is called Sirīsa. 22. Accuta and Sumana, were the chief male lay followers; Nandā and Sunandā, were the chief female lay followers. 23. Forty cubits, was the height of the great sage; A golden radiance emanated, all around for ten leagues. 24. Forty thousand years, was the life span of that great sage; While he endured for that long, he saved many people. 25. Having spread the shop of Dhamma, for men and women with devas; Having roared a lion's roar, he attained Nibbāna with his disciples. 26. Endowed with eight-fold speech, without gaps continuously; All that has disappeared, are not all formations empty? 27. Kakusandha, the supreme Conqueror, attained Nibbāna in Khemārāma; There indeed his supreme stupa, rose a quarter-league into the sky. The lineage of Kakusandha the Blessed One, the twenty-second.
