23. The Chronicle of Vessabhū Buddha 1. In that very auspicious eon, unequalled, an incomparable person; Vessabhū by name, a leader arose in the world. 2. Indeed, the fire of lust was ablaze, the realm of cravings was conquered then; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, he attained supreme enlightenment. 3. When the Wheel of Dhamma was set in motion, by Vessabhū, the world's leader; For eighty thousand myriads, there was the first realization. 4. When he went on tour in the country, the world's eldest, the bull among men; For seventy thousand myriads, there was the second realization. 5. Dispelling great wrong views, he performed a miracle; Humans and devas gathered, ten thousand, with the devas. 6. Seeing the great wonder, the astonishing, hair-raising event; Devas and humans alike, sixty million attained understanding. 7. There were three assemblies, of Vessabhū, the great sage; Of those with defilements destroyed, pure, with tranquil minds, such ones. 8. Of eighty thousand monks, was the first assembly; Of seventy thousand monks, was the second assembly. 9. Of sixty thousand monks, was the third assembly; Of those who feared old age and other dangers, the true sons of the great sage. 10. I, at that time, was a khattiya named Sudassana; Having invited the Great Hero, having given a most worthy offering; With food, drink, and robes, I honored the Conqueror with his Sangha. 11. Of that unequalled Buddha, the supreme Wheel (of Dhamma) was set in motion; Having heard the profound Dhamma, I delighted in renunciation. 12. Having performed a great act of giving, tirelessly day and night; The renunciation endowed with virtues, I went forth in the presence of the Conqueror. 13. Endowed with virtuous conduct, established in duties and precepts; Seeking omniscience, I delighted in the Conqueror's teaching. 14. Having attained faith and joy, I worshipped the Buddha, the Teacher; Joy arose in me, solely for the sake of enlightenment. 15. Knowing my unwavering mind, the Fully Enlightened One declared this: "In the thirty-first eon from now, this one will become a Buddha. 16. "He will be from the delightful city called Kapilavastu... ...we shall be face to face with him." Hearing her words, I further purified my mind; I undertook a higher vow, For the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 18. The city was named Anoma, The king was named Suppatīta; The mother was named Yasavatī, Of the great sage Vessabhū. 19. For six thousand years, He lived in the household; Ruci, Suruci, Rativaddhana, Were the three excellent palaces. 20. Not less than thirty thousand, Women adorned him; That woman was named Sucittā, His son was named Suppabuddha. 21. Seeing the four omens, He went forth in a palanquin; For six months, the supreme man, Practiced strenuous exertion. 22. Being requested by Brahmā, Vessabhū, leader of the world; The great hero turned the wheel, The supreme man, in Arunārāma. 23. Soṇa and Uttara, Were the chief disciples; Upasanta was the attendant, Of the great sage Vessabhū. 24. Rāmā and Samālā, Were the chief female disciples; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, Is called Mahāsāla. 25. Sotthika and Rambha, Were the chief male supporters; Gotamī and Sirimā, Were the chief female supporters. 26. Sixty cubits in height, Like a golden sacrificial post; Rays emanated from his body, Like a flame on a mountain at night. 27. Sixty thousand years, Was the life-span of that great sage; Remaining for that long, He ferried many people across. 28. Having extensively taught the Dhamma, Having divided the great multitude; Having established the Dhamma-boat, He attained Nibbāna with his disciples. 29. Visible to all people, His dwelling and deportment; All that has disappeared, Are not all conditioned things empty? 30. Vessabhū, the victorious teacher, Attained Nibbāna in Khemārāma; His relics were widely spread, In various places. The twenty-first lineage of the Blessed One Vessabhū.
