17. The Chronicle of Dhammadassī Buddha 1. In that very Maṇḍa eon, Dhammadassī, greatly renowned, Dispelled that darkness, And shone forth among gods and humans. 2. When that one of immeasurable splendor Set the Wheel of Dhamma in motion, A hundred thousand times ten million beings Had their first realization. 3. When Dhammadassī Buddha Tamed the ascetic Sañjaya, Then ninety million beings Had their second realization. 4. When Sakka approached the Leader With his retinue, Then eighty million beings Had their third realization. 5. Of that God of gods, There were three assemblies Of taint-free, pure ones, Of tranquil-minded, such ones. 6. When Dhammadassī Buddha Entered the rainy season retreat in Saraṇa, Then a hundred thousand times ten million beings Had their first gathering. 7. Again, when the Buddha Came from the divine to the human realm, Then also a hundred million beings Had their second gathering. 8. Again, when the Buddha Expounded the virtues of the ascetic practices, Then eighty million beings Had their third gathering. 9. At that time, I Was Sakka, Purindada; With divine perfumes and garlands, And music, I paid homage. 10. That Buddha also declared to me, Seated among the gods: “After eighteen hundred eons, This one will become a Buddha. 11. “Having striven with effort… (and so on)… We shall be face to face with him.” 12. Hearing his words, My mind became even more serene; I undertook a further vow, For the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 13. The city was named Saraṇa, The khattiya was named Saraṇa; The mother was named Sunandā, Of Dhammadassī, the Teacher. 14. For eight thousand years, He lived in the household; Araja, Viraja, Sudassana, Were his three excellent palaces. 15. Forty-three thousand Adorned women; The wife was named Vicikoḷi, His son, Puññavaḍḍhana. 16. Seeing the four omens, He went forth from the palace; For seven days, the best of men Practiced the striving. 17. Requested by Brahmā, He, the saint, Dhammadassī, chief of men; The great hero turned the Wheel, the supreme man in Migadāya. 18. Paduma and Phussadeva were the chief disciples; Sunetta by name was the attendant of Dhammadassī, the Teacher. 19. Khemā and Saccanāmā were the chief female disciples; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One is called Bimbijāla. 20. Subhadda and Kaṭissaha were the chief male attendants; Sāḷiyā and Kaḷiyā were the chief female attendants. 21. That Buddha also, peerless, was eighty cubits tall; He shone forth with splendor in the ten-thousandfold world system. 22. Like a fully bloomed Sāla king, like lightning in the sky; Like the midday sun, thus he shone. 23. Of him also, of incomparable splendor, was the length of life; A hundred thousand years the Seer remained in the world. 24. Having shown his radiance, having made the teaching pure; He departed like the moon in the sky, he attained Nibbāna with his disciples. 25. Dhammadassī, the great hero, attained Nibbāna in Sālārāma; There indeed his excellent stupa was three yojanas high. The lineage of Dhammadassī, the Blessed One, the fifteenth.
