**12. The Lineage of Padumuttara Buddha** 1. After Nārada, the Fully Awakened One, supreme among two-footed beings; The Conqueror named Padumuttara, unshaken like the ocean. 2. That was a Maṇḍa eon, in which the Buddha was born; The people of abundant merit, were born in that eon. 3. At the first teaching of Dhamma, by the Blessed One Padumuttara; A hundred thousand crores of beings, attained comprehension of the Dhamma. 4. And after that, as he rained down (Dhamma), satisfying beings; Thirty-seven hundred thousand (3.7 million) beings, attained comprehension a second time. 5. At that time, the Great Hero, approached Ānanda; Having gone to his father's presence, he struck the drum of immortality. 6. When the drum of immortality was struck, and the rain of Dhamma fell; Fifty hundred thousand (5 million) beings, attained comprehension a third time. 7. An instructor, an explainer, a saviour of all beings; The Buddha, skilled in teaching, saved many people. 8. There were three assemblies, of the Teacher Padumuttara; A hundred thousand crores of beings, was the first gathering. 9. When the Buddha, peerless and unequalled, dwelt on Mount Vebhāra; Ninety thousand crores of beings, was the second gathering. 10. Again, when he set out on tour, from villages, towns, and countries; Eighty thousand crores of beings, was the third gathering. 11. At that time, I was, a countryman named Jaṭila; I gave the Sangha, with the Fully Awakened One at its head, along with food and robes. 12. That Buddha also declared concerning me, sitting in the midst of the Sangha; "In a hundred thousand eons from now, this one will become a Buddha. 13. "Having striven with effort... (etc.)... we shall be face to face with him." 14. Having heard his words, I undertook further vows; I made a strong resolve, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 15. All the sectarians were defeated, disheartened and dejected then; No one attended to them, they were expelled from the country. 16. All gathered there, and approached the Buddha; "You are our lord, Great Hero, be our refuge, O Seer." 17. Compassionate, merciful, benevolent to all beings; When the sectarians arrived... all of them, established in the five precepts. 18. Thus it was peaceful, empty of sectarians; Adorned with Arahants, masters of themselves, such ones. 19. The city named Haṃsavatī, the khattiya named Ānanda; The mother named Sujātā, of Padumuttara, the Teacher. 20. Ten thousand years, he lived in the household; Naravāhana, Yasavatī, the three excellent palaces. 21. Forty-three thousand, adorned women; The wife named Vasudattā, the son named Uttama. 22. Seeing the four omens, he went forth from the palace; For seven days, the best of men practiced striving. 23. Being requested by Brahmā, Padumuttara, the leader; The great hero set the wheel in motion, in the excellent Mithila park. 24. Devala and Sujāta, were the chief disciples; Sumana was the attendant, of Padumuttara, the great sage. 25. Amitā and Asamā, were the chief female disciples; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, is called Salala. 26. Vitiṇṇa and Tissa, were the chief male attendants; Haṭṭhā and Vicittā, were the chief female attendants. 27. Fifty-eight cubits, was the height of the great sage; Like a golden pillar, with thirty-two excellent marks. 28. Walls, doors, and partitions, trees, mountains, and rock formations; There was no obstruction for him, for twelve yojanas all around. 29. A hundred thousand years, was his lifespan; Remaining for that long, he saved many people. 30. Having saved many people, having cut off all doubts; Having blazed like a mass of fire, he attained Nibbāna with his disciples. 31. Padumuttara, the Victorious Buddha, attained Nibbāna in Nandārāma; There an excellent stupa for him, twelve yojanas high. The tenth lineage of the Blessed One Padumuttara.
