11. The Chronicle of Nārada Buddha 1. After Paduma, The Fully Awakened One, supreme among bipeds; Nārada by name, Unequalled, an incomparable person. 2. That Buddha was the eldest, Beloved son of a Wheel-turning Monarch; Adorned with garlands and ornaments, He went to the park. 3. There was a tree, widely renowned, Beautiful, great, pure; Approaching it, he sat down, Beneath the great Soṇa tree. 4. There arose supreme knowledge, Infinite, like a diamond; With it, he discerned the formations, Both rising and falling. 5. There he completely removed All defilements without remainder; He attained exclusive enlightenment, And the fourteen Buddha-knowledges. 6. Having attained perfect enlightenment, He set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma; For a hundred thousand crores, There was the first comprehension. 7. The Great Sage, subduing The Nāga king Mahādoṇa; Then performed a miracle, Displaying it to the world with its deities. 8. Then, for devas and humans, At that proclamation of Dhamma; Ninety crores Crossed over all doubt. 9. At the time when the Great Hero Advised his own son; For eighty crores, There was the third comprehension. 10. There were three assemblies For the Great Seer Nārada; For a hundred thousand crores, There was the first gathering. 11. When the Buddha proclaimed The qualities of a Buddha, with their cause; Ninety crores Became pure then. 12. When the Nāga Verocana Gave alms to the Teacher; Then eighty hundred thousand Sons of the Victor became pure. 13. At that time, I was an ascetic With matted hair, of severe austerities; I was an aerial wanderer, Skilled in the five supernormal powers. 14. Then I, the unequalled, Together with the Sangha and his retinue; Having satisfied them with food and drink, Worshipped them with sandalwood. 15. He too then declared concerning me, Nārada, the leader of the world: "In an immeasurable eon, This one will be a Buddha. 16. "Having striven with effort... (etc.) ... We shall be face to face with him." 17. Hearing his words too, Having gladdened my mind even more; I resolved upon a severe vow, For the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 18. Naga Dhanyavatī by name, Sudeva by name, a khattiya; Anoma by name, the mother, of Narada, the great sage. 19. Nine thousand years, in a house he lived; Jita, Vijitābhirāma, three excellent palaces. 20. Forty-three thousand, adorned women; Vijitasenā by name, the woman, Nanduttara by name, the son. 21. Seeing the four signs, on foot he went forth; For seven days, he practiced exertion, the supreme man. 22. Being requested by Brahmā, Narada, the world's guide; The great hero set in motion the wheel, in the excellent Dhananjaya park. 23. Bhaddasāla, Jitamitta, were the chief disciples; Vāseṭṭha by name, the attendant, of Narada, the great sage. 24. Uttarā and Phaggunī, were the chief female disciples; The Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, is called Mahāsoṇa. 25. Uggarinda and Vasabha, were the chief attendants; Indāvarī and Vaṇḍī, were the chief female attendants. 26. Eighty-eight cubits, exceedingly tall was the great sage; Like a golden pillar, he shone in ten thousand worlds. 27. The radiance of his body, spread in every direction; Continuously day and night, it always extended for a yojana. 28. No people at that time, within a yojana all around; Lit torches or lamps, covered by the Buddha's rays. 29. Ninety thousand years, was his lifespan then; Remaining for that long, he saved many people. 30. Just as the sky, adorned with stars, shines beautifully; So too his teaching, shone with Arahants. 31. To cross the stream of saṃsāra, for the remaining practitioners; Having made the Dhamma-bridge firm, that lion among men attained Nibbāna. 32. That Buddha, incomparable, and those Arahants, of immeasurable power; All that has disappeared, are not all conditioned things empty? 33. Narada, the victorious bull, attained Nibbāna in Sudassana city; There his excellent stupa, was four yojanas high. The lineage of the Blessed Narada, the ninth.
