The Chronicle of Sumanabuddha 1. After Maṅgala, there was a leader named Sumana; Unequalled in all qualities, supreme among all beings. 2. Then he, the immortal drum, struck in the city of Mekhala; The nine-fold teaching of the Conqueror, endowed with the conch of Dhamma. 3. Having conquered defilements, having attained supreme enlightenment; The Teacher created a city, the excellent supreme city of the True Dhamma. 4. Continuous, not crooked, straight, wide, and extensive; He created the great path, the excellent supreme path of mindfulness. 5. The four fruits of recluseship, the four analytical knowledges; The six supernormal powers, the eight attainments, he spread along that path. 6. Those who are diligent, complete, endowed with shame and energy; They, these excellent qualities, take up as they wish. 7. In this way, by this method, uplifting the great multitude; The Teacher enlightened first, a hundred thousand crores of beings. 8. At the time when the Great Hero, admonished the groups of sectarians; A hundred thousand crores attained understanding, at the second Dhamma discourse. 9. When gods and humans, united with one mind; Asked about the problem of cessation, and also about doubt in their minds. 10. Then also at the Dhamma discourse, explaining cessation; For ninety thousand crores, there was a third attainment of understanding. 11. There were three assemblies, of Sumana the Great Seer; Of those whose defilements were destroyed, pure, with peaceful minds, such ones. 12. When the Blessed One had completed the rains retreat, at the announced Pavāraṇā; With a hundred thousand crores, the Tathāgata celebrated Pavāraṇā. 13. After that, at the assembly, on the pure golden mountain; Of ninety thousand crores, there was a second gathering. 14. When Sakka, the king of devas, came to see the Buddha; Of eighty thousand crores, there was a third gathering. 15. I, at that time, was a mighty Nāga king; Named Atula, with abundant accumulated merit. 16. Then I, from the Nāga realm, having come forth with my relatives; With divine music of Nāgas, attended the Conqueror with the Saṅgha. 17. A hundred thousand crores I satisfied with food and drink; Giving a pair of individual robes, I took refuge in him. 18. That Buddha too declared about me, Sumanā, the leader of the world: "In an immeasurable eon, this one will become a Buddha. 19. "Having striven with effort... (etc.) we shall be face to face with him." 20. Hearing his words too, I further gladdened my mind; I undertook a higher vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 21. The city was named Mekhala, Sudatta was the name of the king; Sirimā was the mother, of the great sage Sumanā. 22. For nine thousand years, he lived in the household; Cando, Sucando, and Vaṭaṃso, were the three excellent palaces. 23. Sixty-three hundred thousand, women were adorned; Vaṭaṃsikā was the name of the lady, Anūpamo was the name of the son. 24. Seeing the four signs, he went forth by elephant-carriage; For not less than ten months, the Conqueror strove with effort. 25. Being requested by Brahmā, Sumanā, the leader of the world; the great hero set the wheel in motion, in the excellent city of Mekhala. 26. Saraṇa and Bhāvitatta, were the chief disciples; Udena was the attendant, of the great sage Sumanā. 27. Soṇā and Upasoṇā, were the chief female disciples; That Buddha of immeasurable fame, awakened at the foot of a Nāga tree. 28. Varuṇa and Saraṇa, were the chief male lay attendants; Cālā and Upacālā, were the chief female lay attendants. 29. That Buddha, by his height, was ninety cubits tall; Resembling a golden mountain, he shone among ten thousand. 30. Ninety thousand years, was his lifespan; Remaining for that long, he saved many people. 31. Having saved those to be saved, and enlightened those to be enlightened; The Fully Awakened One attained Parinibbāna, like the moon setting. 32. And those bhikkhus free from defilements, and that incomparable Buddha; Having displayed immeasurable splendor, those greatly renowned ones attained Nibbāna. 33. And that incomparable knowledge, and those incomparable jewels; All that has disappeared, are not all conditioned things empty? Sumana, the renowned Buddha, attained Nibbāna in Aṅgārārāma; Right there is his stupa of the Victor, rising four yojanas high. This is the fourth lineage of the Blessed One Sumana.
