5. The Chronicle of Maṅgala Buddha 1. After Koṇḍañña, was the leader named Maṅgala; Having dispelled darkness in the world, he held aloft the torch of Dhamma. 2. His radiance was immeasurable, surpassing other Conquerors; Overpowering the light of moon and sun, he shone throughout ten thousand worlds. 3. That Buddha too proclaimed the four supreme noble truths; Drinking that truth-nectar, they dispelled great darkness. 4. Having attained immeasurable enlightenment, at the first discourse on Dhamma; For a hundred thousand crores, there was realization of the Dhamma. 5. In the abode of the king of devas, the Buddha taught the Dhamma; Then for a thousand crores, there was a second realization. 6. When Sunanda the Wheel-turning Monarch approached the Fully Enlightened One; Then the Fully Enlightened One struck the supreme drum of Dhamma. 7. Sunanda's followers, the people, were then ninety crores; All of them, without remainder, became "Come, Bhikkhu" monks. 8. There were three assemblies for the great sage Maṅgala; Of a hundred thousand crores, was the first gathering. 9. The second was of a hundred thousand crores, the third of ninety crores; Of those with defilements destroyed, the stainless ones, was that gathering. 10. At that time, I was a brahmin named Suruci; A reciter, a mantra-holder, one who had mastered the three Vedas. 11. I approached him, and went for refuge to the Teacher; I honored the Saṅgha, with the Buddha foremost, with perfumes and garlands; Having honored with perfumes and garlands, I satisfied them with cow's milk. 12. That Buddha, Maṅgala, supreme among bipeds, also declared concerning me: "In an immeasurable eon from now, this one will become a Buddha. 13. "Having striven with effort... (etc.)... we shall be face to face with him." 14. Hearing his words, I further gladdened my mind; I undertook a greater vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections. 15. Then, cultivating joy, for the attainment of supreme enlightenment; Having given my house to the Buddha, I went forth near him. 16. The Suttanta and the Vinaya, the nine-fold teaching of the Teacher; Having mastered all, I adorned the Conqueror's Dispensation. 17. Living there, diligent, cultivating divine meditation; having attained the perfection of supernormal powers, I went to the Brahma-world. 18. The city was named Uttara, the khattiya was named Uttara; the mother was named Uttarā, of the great sage Maṅgala. 19. For nine thousand years, he lived in the household; renowned, pure, glorious, in three excellent palaces. 20. Thirty thousand adorned women; the woman was named Yasavatī, the son was named Sīvala. 21. Seeing the four signs, he went forth by horse-chariot; for not less than eight months, the Conqueror strove in exertion. 22. Being requested by Brahmā, the leader named Maṅgala; the great hero set the wheel of Dhamma in motion, in the supreme and glorious forest. 23. Sudeva and Dhammasena, were the chief disciples; Pālita was the attendant, of the great sage Maṅgala. 24. Sīvalā and Asokā, were the chief female disciples; the Bodhi tree of that Blessed One, is called the Nāga tree. 25. Nanda and Visākha, were the chief male attendants; Anulā and Sutanā, were the chief female attendants. 26. Eighty-eight cubits, was the height of the great sage; from him radiated rays, many hundreds of thousands. 27. Ninety thousand years, was his lifespan; remaining for that long, he saved many people. 28. Just as the waves in the ocean, cannot be counted; so too his disciples, cannot be counted. 29. As long as the Fully Awakened One stood, Maṅgala, the leader of the world; there was no defiled death, in his dispensation then. 30. Having upheld the torch of Dhamma, having ferried across the great multitude; having blazed like a comet, that greatly renowned one attained Nibbāna. 31. Having shown the nature of formations, to the world with its devas; having blazed like a mass of fire, just as the sun sets. 32. In the park named Vassara, the Buddha Maṅgala attained Nibbāna; there his Conqueror-stupa, was thirty yojanas high. The third lineage of the Blessed One Maṅgala.
