Koṇḍañña Buddha Chronicle 1. After Dīpaṅkara, a leader named Koṇḍañña; of infinite splendor, immeasurable fame, immeasurable, unapproachable. 2. Like the earth in patience, like the ocean in virtue; like Meru in concentration, like the sky in wisdom. 3. The faculties, powers, factors of awakening, the path, and the truths he revealed; the Buddha always revealed, for the welfare of all beings. 4. When Koṇḍañña, the world's leader, set the Wheel of Dhamma in motion; for a hundred thousand crores, there was the first realization. 5. And thereafter, while teaching, at an assembly of humans and devas; for ninety thousand crores, there was the second realization. 6. When crushing the heretics, he taught the Dhamma; for eighty thousand crores, there was the third realization. 7. There were three assemblies, for the great sage Koṇḍañña; of those whose defilements were destroyed, pure, with peaceful minds, such ones. 8. A hundred thousand crores, was the first assembly; the second was of a thousand crores, the third of ninety crores. 9. At that time, I was a khattiya named Vijitāvī; ruling with sovereignty, up to the very edge of the ocean. 10. A hundred thousand crores, of pure great sages; together with the world's supreme leader, I satisfied with excellent food. 11. That Buddha, Koṇḍañña, the world's leader, declared to me: "In an immeasurable aeon from now, a Buddha will arise in the world. 12. "Having striven with effort, having performed difficult deeds; at the foot of an Assattha tree, the greatly glorious Buddha will awaken. 13. "His mother will be named Māyā; his father named Suddhodana, this one will be Gotama. 14. "Kolita and Upatissa will be his chief disciples; Ananda by name, his attendant, will attend upon this conqueror. 15. "Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā will be his chief female disciples; the Bodhi tree of that Blessed One is called Assattha. 16. "Citta and Hatthāḷavaka will be his chief male lay followers; Nandamātā and Uttarā will be his chief female lay followers; the life span of that glorious Gotama will be a hundred years." 17. Having heard this, of the Lord, the unequalled Great Seer. Gods and humans rejoiced, "Indeed, this is a Buddha-seed!" 18. Shouts of joy arose, they clapped their hands and laughed; With joined palms they bowed, the ten-thousand deities. 19. "If we miss the teaching of this Lord of the world, In the future time, we shall meet him again. 20. "Just as people crossing a river, missing the landing-place, Catching hold at a lower landing-place, cross the great river. 21. "Even so, all of us, if we miss this Conqueror, In the future time, we shall meet him again." 22. Hearing their words, my mind became even more serene; Accomplishing that very purpose, I gave the great kingship to the Conqueror; Having given the great kingship, I went forth in his presence. 23. The Suttanta and the Vinaya, the nine-fold teaching of the Master; Having learned it all, I adorned the Conqueror's teaching. 24. Dwelling there diligently, in sitting and walking meditation; Having reached the perfection of supernormal powers, I went to the Brahma-world. 25. The city was named Rammavatī, the khattiya was named Sunanda; The mother was named Sujātā, of the Great Seer Koṇḍañña. 26. For ten thousand years, he lived in the household; Suci, Suruci, and Subha, were the three excellent palaces. 27. Three hundred thousand, adorned women; The woman was named Rucidevī, her son was Vijitasena. 28. Seeing the four omens, he went forth by chariot; For not less than ten months, the Conqueror strove. 29. Being requested by Brahmā, Koṇḍañña, the best of bipeds; The Great Hero set in motion the wheel, in the excellent city of the gods. 30. Bhadda and Subhadda, were the chief disciples; Anuruddha was the attendant, of the Great Seer Koṇḍañña. 31. Tissā and Upatissā, were the chief female disciples; The Bodhi was Sālakalyāṇika, of the Great Seer Koṇḍañña. 32. Soṇa and Upasoṇa, were the chief lay attendants; Nandā and Sirīmā, were the chief lay female attendants. He eighty-eight cubits, exceedingly tall, the Great Sage; He shone like the moon-king, or the sun at midday. For a hundred thousand years, his life span existed; Remaining for that long, he saved many people. With those whose defilements were destroyed, the pure ones, the earth was adorned; As the sky with stars, so was it beautifully adorned. Those Nāgas, immeasurable, unshakable, unapproachable; Having shown a flash of lightning, those greatly renowned ones attained Nibbāna. And that incomparable power of the Conqueror, and the concentration imbued with wisdom; All that vanished, are not all formations empty? Koṇḍañña, the excellent Buddha, attained Nibbāna in Candārāma; There a shrine was built, seven leagues high. The second lineage of the Blessed One Koṇḍañña.
