having gone to the perfection of loving-kindness, you will attain full enlightenment. 160. "Not only these, will be the Buddha-qualities; I will search for others, qualities that ripen for enlightenment." 161. Searching then I saw, the tenth, the perfection of equanimity; practiced and cultivated by former great sages. 162. "This tenth, you should, firmly undertake; being like a balance, firm, you will attain full enlightenment. 163. "Just as the earth, on what is impure and pure, cast upon it; is indifferent to both, free from anger and attachment. 164. "So too you, in pleasure and pain, always be like a balance; having gone to the perfection of equanimity, you will attain full enlightenment. 165. "Only these are, in the world, the qualities that ripen for enlightenment; beyond them there is no other, firmly establish yourself there." 166. As he reflected on these qualities, with their inherent nature and characteristics; by the power of the Dhamma... Violently, the ten-thousand-world system shook. 167. The earth moves, it roars, Like a sugar-cane press being pressed; Just as a wheel in an oil-press, Thus the earth shakes. 168. As far as the assembly was, In the Buddha's presence; Trembling there, it Fainted and lay on the ground. 169. Many thousands of pots, And many hundreds of jars; Were crushed and shattered there, Striking each other. 170. Disturbed, terrified, frightened, Bewildered, with agitated minds; The great multitude gathered, And approached Dīpaṅkara. 171. "What will happen to the world, Good or evil? All the world is afflicted, Remove that, O Seer." 172. To them then explained Dīpaṅkara, the Great Sage: "Be at ease, do not fear, In this earthquake. 173. "That which I today declared, 'A Buddha will be in the world'; He contemplates the Dhamma, The ancient, practiced by the Buddhas. 174. "While he contemplates the Dhamma, The Buddha-state completely; By that this earth is shaken, The ten-thousand-world system with its devas." 175. Having heard the Buddha's word, The mind was calmed immediately; All approached me, And again paid homage. 176. Having resolved upon the Buddha's qualities, Having made the mind firm; Having saluted Dīpaṅkara, I then arose from my seat. 177. Divine and human flowers, Both devas and humans; Showered down with flowers, Upon him rising from his seat. 178. And they declared well-being, Both devas and humans: "Great is what you have desired, May you obtain it as desired. 179. "May all calamities be avoided, May sorrow and sickness perish; May there be no obstacles for you, Attain quickly the supreme enlightenment. 180. "Just as when the season arrives, Flowering trees blossom; Just so, O Great Hero, You will blossom with Buddha-knowledge. 181. "Just as whatsoever Fully Enlightened Ones Fulfilled the ten perfections; Just so, O Great Hero, Fulfill the ten perfections. As all those Buddhas, awakened at the Bodhi-mandala; So too, you, Great Hero, awaken to the Conqueror's enlightenment. 183. As all those Buddhas, set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma; So too, you, Great Hero, set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma. 184. As the moon on the full moon day, shines forth, perfectly pure; So too, you, with a full mind, shine forth in the ten-thousandfold world. 185. As the sun, freed from Rāhu, shines forth with exceeding radiance; So too, freed from the worlds, may you shine forth with glory. 186. As all rivers, flow into the great ocean; So too, the worlds with their devas, may they flow to your presence. 187. Praised and extolled by them, he, undertook the ten perfections; Fulfilling those perfections, he then entered the forest. The Story of Sumedha's Aspiration is finished.
