I honored the Best of Buddhas. 77. Seven lotus flowers, scattered in the sky, Making a canopy for the Buddha, they remained above his head. 78. With a joyful, cheerful mind, filled with rapture, with joined palms, Having purified my mind there, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 79. A great blue canopy, they hold above my head; I emit a divine fragrance, this is the fruit of the seven lotuses. 80. When I was being carried, by my relatives at that time, As far as my retinue reached, a great blue canopy was held. 81. I became the chief queen of seventy kings of devas; Being sovereign everywhere, I wandered through existences. 82. I became the chief queen of sixty-three wheel-turning monarchs; All followed me, my words were authoritative. 83. My complexion is like a lotus, and a fragrance emanates; I know no ugliness, this is the fruit of honoring the Buddha. 84. Skilled in the bases of psychic power, delighting in the development of awakening factors; Having attained the perfection of higher knowledge, this is the fruit of honoring the Buddha. 85. Skilled in the foundations of mindfulness, residing in concentration and jhāna; Devoted to right efforts, the Buddha This is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 86. My energy is a burden-bearer, leading to security from bondage; All defilements are destroyed, there is no more rebirth now. 87. Thirty-one aeons ago, when I worshipped a flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 88. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without defilements. 89. My coming was indeed welcome… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. 90. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the bhikkhunī Sattuppalamālikā spoke these verses. The eighth is the Apadāna of Theri Sattuppalamālikā. 9. The Apadāna of Theri Pañcadīpikā 91. In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was then a wanderer; From park to park, I wandered, seeking merit. 92. On a day of the dark fortnight, I saw the supreme Bodhi tree; Having gladdened my mind there, I sat at the foot of the Bodhi tree. 93. Having established a respectful mind, and made an añjali to my head; Having expressed joy, I thought thus at once. 94. “If the Buddha is of immeasurable qualities, an incomparable person; Let him show me a miracle, let this Bodhi tree shine forth.” 95. As soon as I reflected, the Bodhi tree blazed forth at once; It became entirely golden, all directions shone brightly. 96. For seven days and nights there, I sat at the foot of the Bodhi tree; When the seventh day arrived, I made a lamp offering. 97. Surrounding the seat, five lamps blazed; Until the sun rose, my lamps blazed then. 98. By that well-done deed, and by my mental aspirations; Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 99. There my well-made mansion, is called Pañcadīpa (Five Lamps); Sixty yojanas high, thirty yojanas wide. 100. Innumerable lamps, blaze around me; As far as the divine abode, it shines with the light of lamps. 101. Supreme Sitting facing the east, if I wish to see; Up, down, and across, I see all with my eye. 102. As far as I desire to see the well-gone and ill-gone; There is no obstruction there, neither in trees nor in mountains. 103. For eighty kings of gods, I acted as chief consort; For a hundred wheel-turning monarchs, I acted as chief consort. 104. Whatever realm I am reborn into, whether divine or human; A hundred thousand lamps shine around me. 105. Having passed away from the deva world, I was reborn in my mother's womb; While in my mother's womb, my eye did not close. 106. A hundred thousand lamps, endowed with meritorious deeds; Shone in the lying-in chamber, this is the fruit of the five lamps. 107. When my last existence arrived, I turned my mind away; I touched the ageless, deathless, the coolness of Nibbāna. 108. At seven years of age, I attained arahantship; The Buddha Gotama ordained me, knowing my virtues. 109. In a pavilion or at the foot of a tree, in palaces or in caves; While dwelling in an empty house, five lamps shine for me. 110. My divine eye is purified, I am skilled in concentration; I have attained the perfection of supernormal powers, this is the fruit of the five lamps. 111. All tasks completed, done what was to be done, taintless; O Great Hero of the five lamps, I venerate the feet of the Seer. 112. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I gave that lamp; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the five lamps. 113. My defilements are burnt away, all existences are uprooted; The cycle of rebirth is destroyed, there is no more renewed existence. I dwell taintless. 114. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, in the presence of the supreme Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 115. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. thus she spoke. The ninth Apadāna of the Theri Pañcadīpikā. 10. The Apadāna of the Theri Udakadāyikā 116. In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a water-carrier; I lived by carrying water, with that I supported my children. 117. And I had no offering, in the unsurpassed field of merit; Approaching the storehouse, I offered water. 118. By that well-done deed, I went to Tāvatiṃsa; There for me a well-made mansion, was created by water-carrying. 119. Of a thousand nymphs, I was indeed the foremost then; In ten ways all of them, I always surpassed. 120. For fifty kings of gods, I acted as chief queen; For twenty universal monarchs, I acted as chief queen. 121. I wandered through two existences, in divinity and then in humanity; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of water. 122. On mountain tops or tree tops, in the sky or on the earth; When I desire water, quickly I obtain it. 123. There is no direction without rain, nor heated and parched; Knowing my intention, a great cloud rains. 124. Sometimes when I was being led, by my relatives then; When I desired rain, a great cloud arose. 125. Neither heat nor fever, is found in my body; And there is no dust on my body, this is the fruit of the gift of water. 126. With a mind purified today, free from mental evil; All defilements exhausted, there is now no rebirth. 127. In the ninety-first eon, when I gave water then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of water. 128. My defilements are burnt... I dwell without taints. 129. Welcome indeed it was for me... the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 130. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed, the nun Udakadāyikā spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of the Theri Udakadāyikā. The chapter of Sumedhā The first. Its summary – Sumedha, giver of a girdle, Gave a pavilion, a bridge; Naḷamālī, giver of alms-food, Kaṭacchu, giver of lotuses. Giver of lamps and giver of water, Verses are counted here; One hundred verses and, Thirty more than that.
