Chapter of Fruit Givers. 1. The Legend of Elder Kurañciya-Fruit-Giver. 1. A hunter I was before, wandering in the forest. I saw the Stainless Buddha, gone beyond all phenomena. 2. Taking a Kurañciya fruit, I gave it to the best of Buddhas; To the Steadfast, field of merit, delighted, with my own hands. 3. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, the fruit I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 4. My defilements are burnt, all existences uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without defilements. 5. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, in the presence of the best of Buddhas; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 6. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kurañciya-Fruit-Giver spoke these verses. The first legend of Elder Kurañciya-Fruit-Giver. 2. The Legend of Elder Kapittha-Fruit-Giver. 7. To the Self-Awakened One, golden-hued, receiver of offerings; Walking on the road, I gave a Kapittha fruit. 8. Ninety-one aeons ago, the fruit I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 9. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without defilements. 10. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...the Buddha's teaching is done. 11. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kapittha-Fruit-Giver spoke these verses. The second legend of Elder Kapittha-Fruit-Giver. 3. The Legend of Elder Kosamba-Fruit-Giver. 12. Like a lordly tree shining, god of gods, bull among men; Walking on the road, I gave a Kosamba fruit then. 13. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, the fruit I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 14. My defilements My defilements are burnt, the craving for existence uprooted; The darts of existence are cut off, I dwell without taints. 15. Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of the foremost Buddha; My offering was made, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 16. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six direct knowledges attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Kosambaphaliya Thera spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of Kosambaphaliya Thera. 4. The Apadāna of Ketakapupphiya Thera. 17. On the bank of the Vinatā river, the supreme person dwelt; I saw the stainless Buddha, one-pointed and well-composed. 18. With a flower of sweet fragrance, of ketaka, I then; With a clear and joyful mind, worshipped the foremost Buddha. 19. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I worshipped that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 20. My defilements are burnt, the craving for existence uprooted; The darts of existence are cut off, I dwell without taints. 21. Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of the foremost Buddha; My offering was made, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 22. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six direct knowledges attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Ketakapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of Ketakapupphiya Thera. 5. The Apadāna of Nāgapupphiya Thera. 23. The golden-hued Sambuddha, receiver of offerings; As he proceeded along the road, I worshipped him with a nāga-flower. 24. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I worshipped that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 25. My defilements are burnt, the craving for existence uprooted; The darts of existence are cut off, I dwell without taints. 26. Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of the foremost Buddha; My offering was made, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 27. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six direct knowledges attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Nāgapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of Nāgapupphiya Thera. 6. The Apadāna of Ajjunapupphiya Thera. 28. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a kinnara then; I saw the stainless Buddha, self-existent, unconquered. 29. With a clear and joyful mind, filled with rapture, with joined palms; Taking an Arjuna flower, the self-existent one I... I worshipped. 30. By that well-done kamma, and by the aspirations; Having abandoned the kinnara body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 31. Thirty-six times as king of devas, I ruled the deva kingdom; Ten times as a Wheel-turning Monarch, I ruled a great kingdom. 32. Vast regional kingdoms, countless in number; Like seeds sown in good soil, oh, they were mine through the Self-Awakened One. 33. Skillful states exist for me, I went forth into homelessness; I am worthy of offerings today, in the teaching of the Sakyan Son. 34. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 35. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 36. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 37. Not far from the Himalayas, there was a mountain named Vasala; A Buddha named Sudassana, dwelt in the mountain's interior. 38. Taking a Himalayan flower, I went through the air; There I saw the Fully Awakened One, who had crossed the flood, taintless. 39. Taking a kuṭaja flower, and placing my hands together on my head; I offered it to the Buddha, the Self-Awakened Great Seer. 40. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, when I worshipped the flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 41. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 42. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 43. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 44. Formerly I was a deer hunter, in the forest, in the wilderness; I saw the dustless Buddha, surrounded by a host of devas. destroyed. 45. “Proclaiming the Four Noble Truths, Teaching the deathless state; I heard the sweet Dhamma, Of Sikhi, the kinsman of the world. 46. “I gladdened my mind at the sound, Of the incomparable person; Having gladdened my mind there, I crossed the difficult-to-cross existence. 47. “Thirty-one aeons ago, When I perceived that perception; I do not know misfortune, This is the fruit of the perception of sound. 48. “My defilements are burnt… …I dwell without defilements. 49. “Welcome indeed it was for me… …The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 50. “The four analytical knowledges… …The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Ghosasaññaka spoke these verses. The eighth is the Apadāna of the Elder Ghosasaññaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Sabbaphaladāyaka 51. “Named Varuṇa, A brahmin skilled in mantras; Having abandoned ten sons, I entered the forest then. 52. “Having made a well-made hermitage, Well-divided and delightful; Having made a leaf-hut, I dwelled in the wilderness. 53. “Padumuttara, the knower of the world, The recipient of offerings; Desiring to uplift me, He came to my hermitage. 54. “As far as the forest grove, A great radiance appeared; By the power of the Buddha, The wilderness blazed then. 55. “Seeing that miracle, Of the supreme Buddha, the steadfast one; Taking a leaf-cup, I worshipped with fruit. 56. “Approaching the Fully Awakened One, I gave a basket of fruit; Out of compassion for me, the Buddha, Spoke this word. 57. ‘Taking the basket of fruit, Come after me; When the Sangha has partaken, Merit will be yours.’ 58. “Taking the end of the leaf-cup, I gave it to the community of monks; Having gladdened my mind there, I was reborn in Tusita. 59. “There with divine dances, Songs and musical instruments; Endowed with meritorious deeds, I always experience happiness. 60. “Whatever existence I am reborn in, Whether divine or human; There is no lack in my enjoyments, This is the fruit of giving fruit. 61. As far as the four continents, with oceans and mountains; Having given fruit to the Buddha, I caused myself to be a lord. 62. As far as my flocks of birds, fly in the sky; They too come under my sway, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 63. As far as in the forest thickets, yakkhas, spirits, and rākṣasas; Kumbhaṇḍas and Garuḷas too, come to serve me. 64. Ants, dogs, bees, both biting flies and mosquitoes; They too come under my sway, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 65. The birds named Supaṇṇas, a powerful species of birds; They too come to me for refuge, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 66. And those long-lived Nāgas, endowed with psychic power, greatly renowned; They too come under my sway, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 67. Lions, tigers, and leopards, bears, wolves, and hyenas; They too come under my sway, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 68. And those dwelling in herbs and grasses, and those dwelling in the sky; All come to me for refuge, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 69. That which is very hard to see, very subtle, profound, well-revealed; Having experienced it, I dwell, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 70. Having experienced the eight liberations, I dwell without defilements; I am ardent and skillful, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 71. Those sons of the Buddha who have attained the fruits, whose defilements are destroyed, greatly renowned; I am one of them, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 72. Having reached the perfection of supernormal knowledge, impelled by the root of merit; Having fully understood all defilements, I dwell without defilements. 73. The three-knowledge holders, those who have attained psychic powers, the greatly renowned sons of the Buddha; Endowed with the divine ear, I am one of them. 74. One hundred thousand aeons ago, when I gave the fruit; I do not know any bad destination, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 75. My defilements are burnt, the craving for existence is uprooted;
