When the Blessed One, whose name was supreme lotus, was placed on the pyre, I worshipped with a sāla flower. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I offered that flower, I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the pyre. My defilements are burnt, all existences are uprooted; like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. Welcome indeed was my coming, in the presence of my Buddha; the three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. When the Blessed One, Sikhī, kinsman of the world, was being cremated, I offered eight champaka flowers to the pyre. Thirty-one aeons ago, when I offered that flower, I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the pyre. Before the Blessed One Vipassī, As he was walking; With a clear and joyful mind, I had a bridge built. 17. Ninety-one aeons ago, When I had that bridge built; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of giving a bridge. 18. My defilements are burnt... I dwell without taints. 19. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 20. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I gave a fan; Covered with jasmine flowers, I held it, of great splendor. 22. Ninety-four aeons ago, I gave that fan; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of the fan. 23. My defilements are burnt... I dwell without taints. 24. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Blessed One named Sataraṃsī, Self-born, unconquered; The Fully Awakened One, desiring solitude, Went forth for alms. 27. Ninety-four aeons ago, When I gave that fruit; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of the gift of fruit. 29. My defilements are burnt... I dwell without taints. 30. Welcome indeed it was for me... In the city of Bandhumatī, I was then a park-keeper; I saw the stainless Buddha, going in the sky. 33. Taking a breadfruit, I gave it to the best of Buddhas; Standing in the sky, the greatly renowned one accepted it. 34. It brought joy to me, bringing happiness in this very life; Having given the fruit to the Buddha, with a mind greatly serene. 35. Then I attained joy, abundant, supreme happiness; A jewel arises, wherever I am reborn. 36. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 37. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 38. Seeing the Buddha in the forest, the Seer of the Goal, greatly renowned; With a serene mind, joyful, I gave a fig fruit. 41. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 42. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 43. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 44. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Who Gave a Fig Fruit spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Who Gave a Fig Fruit, the Eighth. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Who Was Self-Illuminating 45. Like the resplendent Kakudha, God of gods, bull among men; Proceeding on the road, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 46. Having dispelled that darkness, Having ferried across many people; Shining with the light of wisdom, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 47. The world-leader, guided By hundreds of thousands of masters; Lifting up many beings, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 48. Beating the drum of Dhamma, Crushing the crowds of sectarians; Roaring the lion's roar, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 49. From as far as the Brahma-world, Having come, together with Brahmas; They ask subtle questions, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 50. Having made an añjali to whom, The gods implore; By that they experience merit, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 51. All people, having gathered, Invite the One with Vision; He does not waver when requested, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 52. When he enters the city, Many drums resound; Intoxicated elephants roar, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 53. When he walks on the street, All radiance always shines; The uneven becomes even, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 54. When the Buddha speaks, Even the cosmos hears; He makes all beings understand, Who, having seen, would not be pleased? 55. A hundred thousand aeons ago, When I praised the Buddha; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of that praise. 56. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 57. Indeed, it was a good arrival for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 58. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 59. Having entered the Himalayas, I then recited mantras; Fifty-four thousand My disciples attended me. 60. All were learned, masters of the Vedas, Having reached perfection in the six auxiliary sciences; They, stiff with their own magic, dwell in the Himalayas. 61. “Having departed from the Tusita realm, the glorious divine son, arose in his mother’s womb, mindful and fully aware. 62. “When the Fully Awakened One was born, the ten-thousandfold world trembled; the blind regained their sight, when the Leader arose. 63. “This entire earth trembled in every way; hearing the sound of the roar, the great multitudes were agitated. 64. “All the people gathered together, and came to me; ‘The earth has trembled, what will be the result?’ 65. “I then told them, ‘Do not be afraid, there is no danger for you; be at ease, all of you, this arising is for good fortune.’ 66. “For eight reasons, this earth trembles; such signs are seen, a vast and great radiance. 67. “Without doubt, the Supreme Buddha, the Seer, will arise; having reassured the people, I taught the Five Precepts. 68. “Having heard the Five Precepts, and the rare arising of a Buddha; they became agitated, joyful in mind, and delighted. 69. “Ninety-two aeons ago, the sign I explained; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that explanation. 70. “My defilements are burnt away… I dwell without taints. 71. “Welcome indeed it was for me… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 72. “The four analytical knowledges… the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Nimittabyākaraṇiya spoke these verses.
