Chapter on the Giver of a Platform The Legend of Elder Jagatidāyaka 1. At the root of the supreme Bodhi tree, Of the sage Dhammadassī, With a clear mind, joyful, I made a platform. 2. From a cliff or a mountain, Or if I fall from a tree, Having fallen, I find a firm footing; This is the fruit of the platform. 3. Thieves do not harm me, Kings do not despise me; I overcome all enemies; This is the fruit of the platform. 4. Whatever birth I attain, Whether as a deva or a human, Everywhere I am honored; This is the fruit of the platform. 5. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, I made a platform; I do not know a bad destination; This is the fruit of the gift of the platform. 6. My defilements are burnt away, All existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 7. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, In the presence of my Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha's teaching is done. 8. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations, The six supernormal powers are realized; The Buddha's teaching is done. The Legend of Elder Morahatthiya 9. Taking a peacock's feather, I approached the world's leader; With a clear mind, joyful, I gave the peacock's feather. 10. By this peacock's feather, And by my aspirations, The three fires were extinguished; I obtain abundant happiness. 11. Oh, the Buddha! Oh, the Dhamma! Oh, the Teacher's accomplishment! Having given the peacock's feather, I obtain abundant happiness. 12. My three fires are extinguished, All existences are uprooted; All taints are exhausted, Now there is no rebirth. 13. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, The gift I gave then, I do not know a bad destination; This is the fruit of the peacock's feather. 14. My defilements are burnt away, All existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 15. "Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 16. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed the venerable Elder Morahatthiya spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Elder Morahatthiya. 3. The Apadāna of Elder Sīhāsanabījiya 17. "I bowed to the Bodhi tree of the Blessed One Tissa; Holding a fan there, I fanned the lion-seat. 18. "Ninety-two aeons ago, I fanned the lion-seat; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of fanning. 19. "My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 20. "Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 21. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed the venerable Elder Sīhāsanabījiya spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of Elder Sīhāsanabījiya. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Tiṇukkadhāriya 22. "To the supreme Bodhi tree of the Buddha Padumuttara; With a serene and joyful mind, I held three torches. 23. "A hundred thousand aeons ago, I held that torch; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the torch-offering. 24. "My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 25. "Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 26. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed the venerable Elder Tiṇukkadhāriya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of Elder Tiṇukkadhāriya. 5. The Apadāna of Elder Akkamanadāyaka 27. "To the sage Kakusandha, the pure brahmin; As he went for his day-dwelling, I gave him a footstool. 28. "In this very aeon, the gift I gave then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the footstool. 29. "My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 30. "Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. anaṃ. 31. The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Āyasmā Akkamanadāyaka recited these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the Elder Akkamanadāyaka. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Vanakoraṇḍiya 32. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, the world’s foremost, the steadfast one; Taking a wild koraṇḍa flower, I offered it to the Buddha. 33. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I offered that flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 34. My defilements are burnt… I dwell without taints. 35. My coming was indeed good… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 36. The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Āyasmā Vanakoraṇḍiya recited these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Vanakoraṇḍiya. The twentieth recitation section. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekachattiya 37. The earth was like embers, the ground covered with hot ashes; The Blessed One Padumuttara, was walking in the open air. 38. Taking a white parasol, I set out on the path; There, seeing the Fully Enlightened One, joy arose in me. 39. The ground was strewn with mirages, this earth was like embers; Great winds blew, causing discomfort to the body. 40. Dispelling cold and heat, warding off wind and sun; Accept this parasol, I shall experience Nibbāna. 41. Compassionate, merciful, Padumuttara, of great renown; Knowing my intention, the Conqueror accepted it then. 42. For thirty aeons, I was king of devas, I ruled as a deva-king; Five hundred times, I was a universal monarch. 43. Vast regional sovereignty, countless in number; I experience my own karma, well-done by myself in the past. 44. This is my last birth, my final existence rolls on. Ah; Even today my white parasol, is held at all times. 45. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I gave the parasol then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the parasol-gift. 46. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without taints. 47. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 48. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable Elder Ekachattiya these verses spoke. The seventh Apadāna of Elder Ekachattiya. 8. The Apadāna of Elder Jātipupphiya 49. When the Fortunate One, Padumuttara, of great fame, had attained final Nibbāna; Making a flower garland, I offered it to the body. 50. Having gladdened my mind there, I went to a celestial realm; Being gone to the deva world, I remember my meritorious deed. 51. From the sky, a rain of flowers for me, always falls; If I wander among humans, I become a king of great fame. 52. There, a rain of blossoms for me, always showers; By that very flower offering, to the All-seeing One's body. 53. This is my last, final existence; Even today, a rain of flowers for me, always showers. 54. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I offered the flower; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the body-offering. 55. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without taints. 56. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 57. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable Elder Jātipupphiya these verses spoke. The eighth Apadāna of Elder Jātipupphiya. 9. The Apadāna of Elder Paṭṭipupphiya 58. When the body was being carried out, and drums were being beaten; With a gladdened mind, joyful, I offered a paṭṭi flower. 59. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I offered the flower; Suffering I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of honoring the body. 60. My defilements are burnt away, All existences are uprooted; I am free from taints, I dwell without taints. 61. Welcome indeed it was for me, In the presence of the Best of Buddhas; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha's teaching has been done. 62. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable elder Paṭṭipupphiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Paṭṭipupphiya, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Gandhapūjaka 63. While pyres were being made, various scents were gathered; With a clear and joyful mind, I offered a handful of perfume. 64. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I offered to the pyre; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of pyre-offering. 65. My defilements are burnt away, All existences are uprooted; I am free from taints, I dwell without taints. 66. Welcome indeed it was for me, In the presence of the Best of Buddhas; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha's teaching has been done. 67. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable elder Gandhapūjaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Gandhapūjaka, the tenth. The Chapter on Jagatidāyaka, the forty-sixth. Its summary – Jagatī and Morahatthī, Āsanī and Ukkadhāraka; Akkami and Vanakoraṇḍī, Chattada and Jātipūjaka. And the elder Paṭṭipupphī, The tenth is Gandhapūjaka; And sixty-seven verses, Are counted by the wise.
