Chapter 45. The Vibhītaka Chapter 1. The Apadāna of Thera Vibhītakamiñjiya 1. Kakusandha, the great hero, gone to the end of all phenomena; He, withdrawn from the crowd, went into the forest. 2. Taking a seed-kernel, I strung it on a creeper; The Blessed One at that time, was meditating in a mountain cave. 3. Seeing the god of gods, with a mind greatly serene; To the worthy hero, I gave the seed-kernel. 4. In this very eon, the kernel I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the seed-kernel. 5. My defilements are burnt, all existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 6. Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of my Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 7. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Vibhītakamiñjiya spoke these verses. The first Apadāna, that of Thera Vibhītakamiñjiya. 2. The Apadāna of Thera Koladāyaka 8. Clothed in a deer-skin, wearing bark-garments then; Filling a basket, I brought jujubes to my hermitage. 9. At that time, Sikhī Buddha, was unique, without a second; He came to my hermitage, knowing all times. 10. Making my mind serene, and venerating the virtuous one; Taking with both hands, I gave the jujubes to the Buddha. 11. Thirty-one eons ago from this, the fruit I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of jujubes. 12. My defilements are burnt, all existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 13. Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of my Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 14. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Koladāyaka Thus he spoke these verses. The Second Apadāna of the Elder Koladāyaka. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Billiya. 15. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, my hermitage was well-made; Filled with belu trees, attended by various trees. 16. Seeing the fragrant belu fruit, I remembered the best of Buddhas; Filling a basket, delighted, with a stirred mind. 17. Approaching Kakusandha, I gave a belu fruit; To the hero, the field of merit, with a mind utterly clear. 18. In this very eon, the fruit I gave then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 19. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 20. Welcome indeed it was for me... the Buddha's teaching has been done. 21. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Billiya spoke these verses. The Third Apadāna of the Elder Billiya. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Bhallātadāyaka. 22. The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, with thirty-two excellent marks; Walking through the forest peak, like a flowering sal tree king. 23. Having spread a grass mat, I implored the best of Buddhas; 'May the Buddha have compassion on me, I wish to give alms.' 24. Compassionate, merciful, seeing what is beneficial, greatly renowned; Knowing my intention, he descended to my hermitage. 25. Having descended, the Fully Awakened One, sat on the leaf mat; Taking a marking nut, I gave it to the best of Buddhas. 26. While I was watching, the Conqueror partook then; Having purified my mind there, I then saluted the Conqueror. 27. Eighteen hundred eons ago, the fruit I gave then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 28. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 29. Welcome indeed it was for me... the Buddha's teaching has been done. 30. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Bhallātadāyaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Bhallātadāyaka, the Fourth. 5. The Apadāna of Thera Uttalipupphiya 31. In a banyan tree, green-shining, a well-grown tree; Taking an Uttali garland, I offered it to the Bodhi. 32. In this very eon, when I worshipped the Bodhi; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Bodhi worship. 33. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 34. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 35. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Uttalipupphiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Uttalipupphiya, the Fifth. 6. The Apadāna of Thera Ambāṭakiya 36. A well-blossomed sala forest, having entered, the sage Vessabhū; Sat in mountain caves, like a noble lion. 37. With a clear mind, joyful, I worshipped the Ambāṭaka; The unsurpassed field of merit, pleased with my own hands. 38. Thirty-one eons ago from this, when I offered the flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha worship. 39. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 40. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 41. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Ambāṭakiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Ambāṭakiya, the Sixth. 7. The Apadāna of Thera Sīhāsanika 42. To the Blessed One Padumuttara, who was beneficial to all beings; With a clear mind, joyful, I gave a lion-throne. 43. In the world of devas or humans, wherever I dwell; I obtain a vast mansion, this is the fruit of the lion-throne. 44. Of gold, of silver, many of coral; And couches of jewels, nib They always speak of me. 45. Having made a seat for the Bodhi, for the best of those who bow to the lotus; I am born in a high family, oh, the excellent nature of the Dhamma! 46. A hundred thousand aeons ago, I made a lion-throne; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the lion-throne. 47. My defilements are burnt away, all existence-craving is uprooted. Having cut off the cycle with its root, I dwell without taints. 48. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, in the presence of the best of Buddhas. The three knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 49. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, the six direct knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Sīhāsanika spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Sīhāsanika, the seventh. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Pādapīṭhiya 50. The Fully Enlightened One named Sumedha, the foremost, compassionate sage; Having saved many beings, that greatly renowned one attained Nibbāna. 51. Near the lion-throne, of the great sage Sumedha; With a clear mind and cheerful heart, I made a footstool. 52. Having done a wholesome deed, with pleasant result, with pleasant outcome; Endowed with meritorious action, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 53. While I was dwelling there, endowed with meritorious action; As I lifted my feet, golden footstools appeared for me. 54. Well-gained are the gains for those of you, who obtain a hearing; Having done service to the one attained Nibbāna, they obtain abundant happiness. 55. By me too, a good deed was done, a trade well-applied; Having made a footstool, I obtain a golden footstool. 56. Whichever direction I go, for some purpose; I step on golden footstools, this is the fruit of meritorious action. 57. For thirty thousand aeons, the deed I did then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the footstool. 58. My defilements are burnt away, all existence-craving is uprooted. Having cut off the cycle with its root, I dwell without taints. 59. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, in the presence of the best of Buddhas. The three knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 60. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, the six direct knowledges have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Pādapīṭhiya spoke these verses. Foot The Apadāna of Thera Apīṭhiya, the Eighth. 9. The Apadāna of Thera Vedikāraka 61. At the supreme Bodhi tree Of the Blessed One Padumuttara, Having made a well-built railing, I gladdened my own mind. 62. Then great treasures, Made and unmade, Rain down from the sky; This is the fruit of the railing. 63. In a battle arrayed on both sides, Entering into fearful situations, I do not see fear or terror; This is the fruit of the railing. 64. Knowing my resolve, A beautiful mansion arises; Precious couches; This is the fruit of the railing. 65. A hundred thousand aeons ago, When I made the railing, I do not know a bad destination; This is the fruit of the railing. 66. My defilements are burnt away… I dwell without taints. 67. Welcome indeed it was for me… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 68. The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Vedikāraka Thera Spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Vedikāraka, the Ninth. 10. The Apadāna of Thera Bodhigharadāyaka 69. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, The Lord of bipeds, the steadfast one; With a gladdened and joyful mind, I built a Bodhi-house. 70. I was reborn in Tusita, I dwell in a jeweled house; Neither cold nor heat affects me, Wind does not touch my limbs. 71. Sixty-five aeons ago, I was a Wheel-turning Monarch; A city named Kāsika, Built by Visukamma. 72. Ten yojanas in length, Eight yojanas in width; In that city there was no Wood, creeper, or clay. 73. One yojana across, Half a yojana in width; A palace named Maṅgala, Built by Visukamma. 74. Eighty-four thousand Pillars were made of gold; The pinnacles were made of jewels, The roof was silver. 75. A house all made of gold, Built by Visukamma; This was inhabited by me, The house… This is the fruit of giving. 76. All of them having experienced
