Not far from the Himalayas, is a mountain named Paduma; my hermitage is well-made, my leaf-hut well-built. 331. Rivers flow there, with pleasant, good fords; clear-watered, cold-watered, rivers always flow. 332. Pāṭhīna, pāvusa fish, balaja, muñja, rohita; these adorn the rivers, they always dwell in the river. 333. Covered with mangoes and jambus, and kareri and tilaka trees; uddālaka and pāṭali trees, adorn my hermitage. 334. Aṅkolaka, bimbijāla, and māyākārī in bloom; wafting with fragrance, adorn my hermitage. 335. Atimuttā, sattalikā, nāga and sāla trees in bloom; emitting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage. 336. Kosamba, saḷala, nīpa, and aṭṭhaṅga also in bloom; emitting divine fragrance, adorn my hermitage. 337. Harītakī, āmalakī, mango, jambu, vibhītaka Kolā, bhallātaka, billa, many fruits are in my hermitage. 338. "Kalamba and kandalī blossom in my hermitage; emitting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage. 339. "Asoka, piṇḍī, and varī, and nimba trees in bloom; emitting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage. 340. "Punnāga, giripunnāga, timira blossom there; emitting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage. 341. "Nigguṇḍī, sirinigguṇḍī, campaka trees blossom here; emitting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage. 342. "Not far, a lotus pond, resounding with cakkavāka birds; covered with mandālaka flowers, and with lotuses and water lilies. 343. "Clear water, cool water, well-situated, delightful; clear like crystal, they adorn my hermitage. 344. "Lotuses blossom there, white lotuses and water lilies; covered with mandālaka flowers, they adorn my hermitage. 345. "Pāṭhīna, pāvusa fish, balaja, muñja, rohita; swimming about there, they adorn my hermitage. 346. "Crocodiles, porpoises, and many turtles and alligators; water snakes and pythons, they adorn my hermitage. 347. "Pigeons, ravihaṃsa, cakkavāka, river birds; dindibha and sāḷikā here, they adorn my hermitage. 348. "Nayita, ambagandhī, ketaka blossom there; emitting divine fragrance, they adorn my hermitage. 349. "Lions, tigers, and leopards, bears, wolves, and hyenas; roaming in the forest, they adorn my hermitage. 350. "Burdened with matted hair, wearing antelope skins; roaming in the forest, they adorn my hermitage. 351. "These, wearing skins, are skillful, of peaceful conduct; all of them eat little, they adorn my hermitage. 352. "Taking a load of salt, then entering the forest; roots eating fruits, they dwelt in the hermitage then. 353. “They do not bring wood, nor water for washing feet; By the power of all, it is brought by itself. 354. “Eighty-four thousand sages gathered there; All of them were meditators, seekers of the highest goal. 355. “Ascetics, celibates, urging on their absorption; All moving in the sky, they dwelt in the hermitage then. 356. “For five days they assemble, concentrated, of peaceful conduct; Having saluted each other, they depart in various directions. 357. “The Victor named Padumuttara, one who has crossed all phenomena; Dispelling that darkness, the Victor arose at once. 358. “Near my hermitage, there was a powerful yakkha; He told me about the Fully Awakened One, the supreme leader, born from a lotus. 359. “‘This Buddha has arisen, Padumuttara, the great sage; Go quickly to the Fully Awakened One, and attend upon him, good sir.’ 360. “Having heard the yakkha’s words, with a mind greatly pleased; Having arranged the hermitage, I departed from the forest then. 361. “As if my clothes were burning, having left the hermitage; Having stayed one night, I approached the leader. 362. “Padumuttara, the knower of the world, recipient of offerings; Proclaiming the Four Noble Truths, he taught the deathless state. 363. “Taking a fully bloomed lotus, having approached the great sage; With a pleased and joyful mind, I offered it to the Buddha. 364. “Having honored the Fully Awakened One, the supreme leader, born from a lotus; Making my deer-skin robe over one shoulder, I praised the leader of the world. 365. “By what knowledge the Fully Awakened One dwells here, taintless; That knowledge I shall extol, listen to my words. 366. “‘Having cut off the stream of transmigration, you saved all beings; Having heard your Dhamma, they cross the stream of craving. 367. “‘You are the teacher and the banner, the flag and the sacrificial post for beings; The refuge and the support, the lamp, O best of bipeds. 368. “‘As far as there are calculators in the world are called caravan leaders; You are the foremost, the Omniscient, they are contained within you. 369. “‘By your knowledge, Omniscient One, you save many people; By seeing you, they will make an end to suffering. 370. “‘Whatever fragrances there are, that waft in the world, O Seer; There is no fragrance like yours, O Great Sage, in the field of merit.’ 371. “‘You freed from the animal realm and hell, O Seer; You taught the unconditioned, peaceful state, O Great Sage.’ 372. Padumuttara, the knower of worlds, recipient of offerings; Seated in the assembly of monks, spoke these verses. 373. “‘He who honored my knowledge, pleased with his own hands; Him I shall praise, listen to my words. 374. “‘For thirty thousand aeons, he will rejoice in the deva world; A thousand times, he will be a king, a universal monarch.’ 375. I have gained a good gain, having pleased the well-behaved one; Having fully understood all defilements, I dwell without defilements. 376. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without defilements. 377. It was indeed a good coming for me… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 378. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Venerable Udena Thera spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of Udena Thera. The forty-first chapter, Metteyya Vagga. Its summary – Metteyya, Punṇaka Thera, Mettagū and Dhotaka; Upasīva and Nanda, Hemaka is the seventh there. Todeyya, Jatukaṇṇī, and Udena, the greatly renowned; Here are three hundred and eighty-three verses.
