38. Chapter of Saluting the Bodhi 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Bodhivandaka 1. Seeing a green Pāṭali, a tree growing from the earth; Making a salutation with clasped hands on one shoulder, I saluted the Pāṭali. 2. Raising my clasped hands, making my mind reverent; Pure within, pure without, well-freed, without defilements. 3. Vipassī, honored by the world, an ocean of compassion and wisdom; As if the Fully Awakened One were before me, I saluted the Pāṭali. 4. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I saluted the Bodhi; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of that salutation. 5. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha’s teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Bodhivandaka spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of the Elder Bodhivandaka. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Pāṭalipupphiya 6. The Blessed One named Vipassī, self-existent, the foremost person; Accompanied by his disciples, the Conqueror entered Bandhumā. 7. Three Pāṭali flowers, were placed in my lap; Wishing to wash my head, I went to the river ford. 8. Leaving Bandhumatī, I saw the leader of the world; Like a blazing blue lotus, like a burning fire. 9. Like an excellent tiger-bull, like a noble lion; Going, the foremost of ascetics, accompanied by the assembly of monks. 10. Pleased with that ascetic, the Fortunate One, the cleanser of defilements; Taking three flowers, I honored the foremost Buddha. 11. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I honored with flowers; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of that Buddha-worship. 12. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha’s teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Pāṭalipupphiya spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of the Elder Pāṭalipupphiya. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya 13. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a monkey then; I saw the stainless Buddha, seated in a mountain cave. 14. O Speaking, in all directions, like a blooming sala tree king; Endowed with marks and signs, seeing him, my mind was delighted. 15. With an uplifted mind, joyful, my heart thrilled with rapture; Three lotus flowers, I placed upon my head. 16. Having honored with flowers, the great sage Phussa; Becoming respectful, I departed facing north. 17. Going, with a bent back, with a mind serene; Falling into a mountain cleft, I met the end of my life. 18. By that well-done action, and by the aspirations of my will; Leaving my former birth, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 19. Three times a hundred, I ruled as king of devas; Five times a hundred, I became a Wheel-turning monarch. 20. Ninety-two aeons ago, when I honored with flowers; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 21. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of the Elder Tīṇuppalamāliya. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Paṭṭipupphiya 22. When the Fully Awakened One, the great sage Padumuttara, attained Nibbāna; All people gathered, they carried out the body. 23. As the body was being carried out, while drums were being beaten; With a serene and joyful mind, I offered a paṭṭi flower. 24. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I honored with flowers; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of honoring the body. 25. My defilements are burnt away, all existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 26. Welcome indeed it was for me, in the presence of my Buddha [the best of Buddhas]; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 27. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Paṭṭipupphiya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Paṭṭipupphiya. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Sattapaṇṇiya 28. Suma The Fully Awakened One by name, The leader of the world arose; With a clear mind, joyful, I offered a *sattapaṇṇa* flower. 29. A hundred thousand aeons ago, I offered a *sattapaṇṇa* flower; I know no suffering; This is the fruit of the *sattapaṇṇa* offering. 30. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without defilements. 31. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. 32. The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Sattapaṇṇiya spoke these verses. The Fifth Apadāna of Thera Sattapaṇṇiya. 6. The Sixth Apadāna of Thera Gandhamuṭṭhiya 33. While the pyre was being made, various perfumes were gathered; With a clear mind, joyful, I offered a handful of perfume. 34. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I honored the pyre; I know no suffering; This is the fruit of the pyre offering. 35. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without defilements. 36. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. 37. The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Gandhamuṭṭhiya spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna of Thera Gandhamuṭṭhiya. 7. The Seventh Apadāna of Thera Citakapūjaka 38. When the Blessed One had attained final Nibbāna, whose name was Lotus-Supreme; When he was placed on the pyre, I offered a *sāla* flower. 39. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I offered that flower; I know no suffering; This is the fruit of the pyre offering. 40. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without defilements. 41. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. 42. The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Citakapūjaka spoke these verses. The Seventh Apadāna of Thera Citakapūjaka. 8. The Apadāna of Thera Sumanatālavaṇṭiya 43. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I gave a palm-leaf fan. I myself; Covered with jasmines, I hold a very valuable fan. 44. Ninety-four aeons ago, I gave a palm-leaf fan; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of that palm-leaf fan. 45. My defilements are burnt... (etc.) ... I dwell without taints. 46. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... (etc.) ... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 47. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.) ... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Sumanatālavaṇṭiya spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of Thera Sumanatālavaṇṭiya. 9. The Apadāna of Thera Sumanadāmiya 48. For the Blessed One Siddhattha, The purified ascetic; Having made a jasmine garland, I held it standing before him. 49. Ninety-four aeons ago, The garland I held then; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of holding the jasmine. 50. My defilements are burnt... (etc.) ... I dwell without taints. 51. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... (etc.) ... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 52. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.) ... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Sumanadāmiya spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of Thera Sumanadāmiya. 10. The Apadāna of Thera Kāsumāriphaladāyaka 53. Shining like a Kaṇikāra tree, Seated in a mountain cave; I saw the stainless Buddha, Foremost in the world, a bull among men. 54. With a clear and joyful mind, Having placed my hands together on my head; Taking a Kāsumāri fruit, I gave it to the supreme Buddha. 55. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, The fruit that I gave; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 56. My defilements are burnt... (etc.) ... I dwell without taints. 57. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... (etc.) ... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 58. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.) ... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Kāsumāriphaladāyaka spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of Thera Kāsumāriphaladāyaka. The Thirty-eighth Chapter: Homage to the Bodhi Tree. Its Summary: Bodhi, Pāṭali, Uppalī, Paṭṭi and Sattapaṇṇī; Gandhamuṭṭhi and Citaka, Tāla, Sumanadāmaka; Kāsumāriphalī also, Fifty-nine verses.
