37. The Chapter of Mandārava Flowers 1. The Apadāna of Mandāravapupphiya Thera 1. Devas of Tāvatiṃsa, having come here, a young man named Maṅgala; Having taken a Mandārava flower, to the great sage Vipassī. 2. To him seated in concentration, on his head I placed it; For seven days having held it, to the deva world I returned again. 3. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I worshipped with a flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 4. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 2. The Apadāna of Kakkārupupphiya Thera 5. Yāma devas, having come here, to Gotama, the fortunate one; Having taken a Kakkāru garland, I offered to the Buddha. 6. Ninety-two aeons ago, when I worshipped the Buddha; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 7. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 3. The Apadāna of Bhisamuḷāladāyaka Thera 8. The Fully Awakened One was named Phussa, gone beyond all phenomena; Desiring solitude, the all-knowing one, came to my presence. 9. Having gladdened my mind in him, the great compassionate conqueror; Having taken a lotus root, I gave to the foremost Buddha. 10. Ninety-two aeons ago, when I gave the lotus root then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the lotus root gift. 11. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 4. The Apadāna of Kesarapupphiya Thera 12. Knowledge-holder Oh, then I was, on the Himālaya mountain; I saw the stainless Buddha, walking, greatly renowned. 13. Three kesara flowers, having placed on my head then; Approaching the Fully Awakened One, Vessabhū, I paid homage. 14. Thirty-one aeons ago from here, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 15. The four analytical knowledges, and the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kesarapupphiya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Kesarapupphiya. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Aṅkolapupphiya 16. The Fully Awakened One named Paduma, dwelt then on Cittakūṭa; Seeing that Buddha, the self-born, the unconquered, I approached. 17. Seeing an aṅkola tree in bloom, having gathered (flowers) then; Approaching the Fully Awakened One, I worshipped Paduma, the Conqueror. 18. Thirty-one aeons ago from here, the flower I worshipped with; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 19. The four analytical knowledges, and the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Aṅkolapupphiya spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the Elder Aṅkolapupphiya. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Kadambapupphiya 20. The golden-hued Fully Awakened One, walking in the marketplace; Like a golden pillar, with the thirty-two excellent marks. 21. Sitting in a splendid palace, I saw the leader of the world; Taking a kadamba flower, I worshipped Vipassī. 22. Ninety-one aeons ago from here, the Buddha I worshipped; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 23. The four analytical knowledges, and the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kadambapupphiya spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Kadambapupphiya. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Uddālakapupphiya 24. The Fully Awakened One named Anoma ...then, I lived on the bank of the Ganges; Taking an Uddālaka flower, I worshipped the Invincible One. 25. ‘‘Thirty-one aeons ago, when I worshipped that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 26. ‘‘The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done.’’ Thus indeed, the Venerable Uddālakapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna of Uddālakapupphiya Thera. 8. The Apadāna of Ekacampakapupphiya Thera 27. ‘‘The Tranquil and Fully Awakened One, resided in a mountain cave; Taking a single Campaka flower, I approached the Foremost of Men. 28. ‘‘With a clear mind, joyful, the supreme solitary sage; Holding it with both hands, I worshipped the Invincible One. 29. ‘‘Sixty-five aeons ago, when I worshipped that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 30. ‘‘The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done.’’ Thus indeed, the Venerable Ekacampakapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of Ekacampakapupphiya Thera. 9. The Apadāna of Timirapupphiya Thera 31. ‘‘On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was going downstream; I saw the dustless Buddha, like a blossoming Sāla king. 32. ‘‘With a clear mind, joyful, the supreme solitary sage; Taking a Timira flower, I scattered it on his head. 33. ‘‘Ninety-one aeons ago, when I worshipped that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 34. ‘‘The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done.’’ Thus indeed, the Venerable Timirapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of Timirapupphiya Thera. 10. The Apadāna of Saḷalapupphiya Thera 35. ‘‘On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was a Kinnara then; There I saw the god of gods, the bull among men, walking. 36. ‘‘Having gathered a Saḷala flower, I gave it to the Buddha; The Great Hero smelled the Saḷala, which had a divine fragrance. 37. ‘‘Having received it, the Fully Awakened One... Vipassī, the leader of the world, rose. The great hero approached, while I was watching, mindful. 38. With a clear mind, joyful, Having paid homage to the best of bipeds; Having raised my hands in reverence, Again I ascended the mountain. 39. Ninety-one aeons ago, When I offered that flower; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 40. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Saḷalapupphiya Thera recited these verses. The tenth Apadāna of the Thera Saḷalapupphiya. The thirty-seventh chapter, Mandāravapupphiya. Its summary – Mandārava and Kakkāru, Bhisakesarapupphiya; Aṅkolaka and Kadambī, Uddālī, Ekacampaka; Timira and Saḷala, And the verses are forty.
