36. The Chapter on the Sound-Perceiver 1. The Legend of Elder Saddasaññaka 1. A hunter of deer I was before, in the forest, in the wilderness I. There I saw the Fully Awakened One, honored by a host of devas. 2. Proclaiming the Four Noble Truths, uplifting the great multitude. I heard his sweet voice, like the cry of the karavīka bird. 3. Of the sage with a divine voice, the glorious one, kinsman of the world. Having gladdened my mind by that sound, I attained the destruction of defilements. 4. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that joy. 5. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 2. The Legend of Elder Yavakalāpiya 6. In the city of Aruṇavatī, I was a grass-seller then. Seeing the Fully Awakened One on the path, I spread out a bundle of grass. 7. Compassionate, full of pity, the glorious one, leader of the world. Knowing my intention, he sat on the grass-spread. 8. Seeing the pure one seated, the great meditator, the leader; Having generated joy, I passed away there. 9. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the grass-spread. 10. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 3. The Legend of Elder Kiṃsukapūjaka 11. Seeing a blooming Kiṃsuka flower, having raised my hands in reverence; Remembering the Buddha Siddhattha, I worshipped in the sky. 12. Ninety-four aeons ago from now, the flower I worshipped; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 13. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, Thera Kiṃsukapūjaka spoke these verses. The Story of Thera Kiṃsukapūjaka, the third. 4. The Story of Thera Sakosakakoraṇḍadāyaka 14. Having seen the footprint, of the Buddha, kinsman of the world; Making the deer-skin over one shoulder, I worshipped the excellent footprint. 15. Having seen a blooming Koraṇḍa tree, a plant growing from the earth; Taking it with its sheath, I worshipped the wheel-marked footprint. 16. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the footprint. 17. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Sakosakakoraṇḍadāyaka spoke these verses. The Story of Thera Sakosakakoraṇḍadāyaka, the fourth. 5. The Story of Thera Daṇḍadāyaka 18. Having entered a forest grove, cutting a bamboo then; Making it into a support, I gave it to the Saṅgha. 19. With that serene mind, having saluted the virtuous ones; And having given the support, I departed facing north. 20. Ninety-four aeons ago, the staff I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of giving the staff. 21. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Daṇḍadāyaka spoke these verses. The Story of Thera Daṇḍadāyaka, the fifth. 6. The Story of Thera Ambayāgudāyaka 22. A Fully Enlightened One named Sataraṃsī, self-existent, unconquered; Having risen from absorption, came to me for alms. 23. Having seen the Paccekabuddha, I gave mango gruel; To him, whose mind was serene, with a very serene mind. 24. Ninety-four aeons ago, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the mango gruel. 25. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Ambayāgudāyaka spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Ayāgudāyaka. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Supuṭakapūjaka 26. From his day-residence he came forth, Vipassī, leader of the world; Wandering for alms, He came near to me. 27. Then delighted, with joyful mind, To the steadfast best of Buddhas; Having given a pouch of salt, For an eon I rejoiced in heaven. 28. Ninety-one eons ago, When I gave that pouch; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the pouch. 29. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Supuṭakapūjaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna of the Elder Supuṭakapūjaka. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Mañcadāyaka 30. To the Blessed One Vipassī, The steadfast chief of the world; One couch was given by me, With a clear mind, while alive. 31. Elephant vehicles, horse vehicles, Divine vehicles I obtained; By that gift of a couch, I have attained the destruction of defilements. 32. Ninety-one eons ago, When I gave that couch; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the couch-gift. 33. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Mañcadāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of the Elder Mañcadāyaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Saraṇagamaniya 34. Then we boarded a boat, A bhikkhu and I, an Ajīvaka; As the boat was breaking up, The bhikkhu gave me refuge. 35. Thirty-one eons ago from now, When he gave me refuge; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of taking refuge. 36. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Saraṇagamaniya spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of the Elder Saraṇagamaniya. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Piṇḍapātika 37. There was a Sambuddha named Tissa, He dwelt in the forest then; Having come here from Tusita, I gave alms. 38. Having saluted the Sambuddha, Tissa, the greatly renowned; My own Having gladdened my mind, I went to Tusita. 39. Ninety-two aeons ago from here, The gift I then gave; I have not known suffering, This is the fruit of the alms-food. 40. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Piṇḍapātika spoke these verses. The Tenth Apadāna of Elder Piṇḍapātika. The Thirty-sixth Chapter: The Perception of Sound. Its Summary – Perception of Sound, Yavasika, Kiṃsuka and Oraṇḍa flowers; Ālambana, Mango-gruel, Supuṭī, Giver of a couch; Refuge, and Alms-food, And exactly forty verses.
