dependent on others for food. 75. Sitting in solitude, I thought thus then; A Buddha has arisen in the world, but I have no means. 76. It is time for me to purify my destiny, the opportunity has been given to me; Painful is the touch of hell, for beings without merit. 77. Having thought thus, I approached my employer; Asking for one day's work, I entered the forest. 78. Having brought grass, wood, and creepers, I then; Placing them on a tripod, I made a grass hut. 79. Having dedicated that hut for the benefit of the Saṅgha; On that very day, having come, I approached my employer. 80. By that well-done kamma, I went to Tāvatiṃsa; There, a well-made mansion for me, beautifully constructed like a hut. 81. A thousand-branched, hundred-crested, green-colored banner; A hundred thousand pinnacles, appeared in my mansion. 82. Whatever existence I am reborn into, whether divine or human; Knowing my intention, a palace stands ready. 83. Fear or trembling, or goosebumps do not exist; I do not know their cause for me, this is the fruit of the grass hut. 84. Lions, tigers, and leopards, bears, wolves, and hyenas; All avoid me, the grass hut. What is this fruit? 85. Serpents and spirits, snakes, kumbhaṇḍa demons; Even they avoid me, this is the fruit of the grass hut. 86. Not even a bad dream, do I remember seeing; Mindfulness is present in me, this is the fruit of the grass hut. 87. In that very grass hut, having experienced prosperity; Of the Blessed One Gotama, I realized the Dhamma. 88. Ninety-one aeons ago, the kamma I did then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the grass hut. 89. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Tiṇakuṭidāyaka spoke these verses. The seventh, the Aapadāna of the Elder Tiṇakuṭidāyaka. 8. The Aapadāna of the Elder Uttareyyadāyaka 90. In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was a brahmin then; A teacher, a mantra-holder, skilled in the three Vedas. 91. Honored by my disciples, of good birth and well-trained; To perform the water libation, I left the city then. 92. The Conqueror named Padumuttara, skilled in all dhammas; With thousands of arahants, the Conqueror entered the city. 93. Seeing his very beautiful form, as if made of immovability; Surrounded by arahants, seeing him, my mind became clear. 94. Making an añjali on my head, having bowed to the good one; With a clear and joyful mind, I gave my upper garment. 95. Taking it with both hands, I lifted my robe; As far as the Buddha's assembly, so far the robe covered. 96. While he was going for alms, the leader of the great bhikkhu assembly; Making a cover, he stood, making me laugh then. 97. As he was leaving his house, the self-born, the foremost person; The Teacher stood as if in the street, and gave me his approval. 98. With a clear and joyful mind, who gave me the robe; Him I will praise, listen as I speak. 99. "For thirty thousand aeons, he will rejoice in the deva world; Fifty- He himself, the lord of devas, will exercise the kingship of devas. 100. For one dwelling in the deva world, endowed with meritorious deeds, all around for a hundred yojanas, it will be covered with cloth. 101. Thirty-six times a king, a universal monarch he will be; extensive regional kingship, innumerable by count. 102. For one wandering in existence, endowed with meritorious deeds, all that is wished for by mind, will arise immediately. 103. Silken and woolen blankets, and linen and cotton clothes; and valuable garments, this person will obtain. 104. All that is wished for by mind, this person will obtain; the result of a single cloth, he will experience always. 105. He, afterwards having gone forth, impelled by the root of merit, the Dhamma of Gotama, the Blessed One, he will realize. 106. Oh! My well-done deed, to the Omniscient Great Seer; having given a single cloth, I have attained the deathless state. 107. In a pavilion or at the foot of a tree, dwelling in an empty house; it provides a cloth covering, all around a fathom's length for me. 108. Without being asked, I use robes and requisites; I am a recipient of food and drink, this is the fruit of Uttareyya. 109. A hundred thousand aeons ago, the deed I did then; I have not known a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of cloth. 110. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed the venerable Elder Uttareyyadāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth is the Apadāna of the Elder Uttareyyadāyaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Dhammasavaniya 111. The Conqueror named Padumuttara, master of all phenomena; proclaiming the Four Noble Truths, he brought peace to many people. 112. At that time I was an ascetic, with matted hair, of severe practices; wearing bark garments, I went in the sky then. 113. Above the foremost Buddha, I was not able to go; like a bird having struck a rock I cannot go. 114. “This has never happened to me before, this disturbance of my posture; As one emerges from water, so I walk in the sky. 115. “A noble man, will be seated below; Come, I will seek him, perhaps I may find some benefit. 116. “Descending from the sky, I heard the Teacher’s voice; Declaring impermanence, that I grasped at that time. 117. “Having grasped the perception of impermanence, I went to my hermitage; Having lived there for my lifespan, I passed away there. 118. “When my last moment was at hand, I recalled that hearing of the Dhamma; By that well-done deed, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 119. “For thirty thousand kappas, I rejoiced in the world of devas; And fifty-one times, I ruled as king of devas. 120. “And seventy-one times, I was a Wheel-turning Monarch; Vast regional rule, innumerable in number. 121. “Seated in his father’s house, the monk with developed faculties; Expounding in a verse, he declared impermanence. 122. “I recall that perception, wandering through existences; I do not fully penetrate the ultimate, Nibbāna, the deathless state. 123. “Impermanent, alas, are formations, of the nature to arise and pass away; Having arisen, they cease, their appeasement is bliss. 124. “Having heard the verse, I recalled my past deed; Seated in one seat, I attained arahantship. 125. “At seven years of age, I attained arahantship; The Buddha, the Seer, ordained me, knowing my qualities. 126. “Being just a child, I completed what was to be done; What is there for me to do today, in the Dispensation of the Sakyan son? 127. “A hundred thousand kappas ago, the deed I did then; I do not know any bad destination, the fruit of hearing the True Dhamma. 128. “The four analytical knowledges …pe… the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Dhammasavaniya Thera spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of Dhammasavaniya Thera. 10. The Apadāna of Ukkhittapadumiya Thera 129. In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was then a garland-maker; Entering a lotus pond, I gathered a hundred-petaled lotus. 130. The Victor named Padumuttara, who had crossed over all phenomena; With a hundred thousand disciples, calm-minded and steadfast. 131. Pure, with defilements destroyed, with six supernormal powers, meditators; Seeking my welfare, came to my presence. 132. Having seen the god of gods, the self-existent, leader of the world; Cutting the stem of the hundred-petaled lotus, I tossed it into the sky then. 133. “If you are the Buddha, hero, foremost in the world, chief of men; May the hundred-petaled lotuses themselves go, and be held upon your head.” 134. The great hero, foremost in the world, chief of men, willed it; By the power of the Buddha, they were held upon his head. 135. By that well-done deed, and by the aspirations of my mind; Abandoning the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 136. There, my well-made mansion, is called “Hundred-petaled”; Sixty yojanas high, thirty yojanas wide. 137. A thousand times, as king of devas, I ruled the deva kingdom; And seventy-five times, I became a Wheel-turning Monarch. 138. Vast regional rule, innumerable by counting; I experience my own karma, well-done by myself in the past. 139. By that one lotus, having experienced prosperity; I realized the Dhamma of the Blessed Gotama. 140. My defilements are burnt, all existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without defilements. 141. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I offered that flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of one lotus. 142. The four analytical knowledges horse... and so on... the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Ukkhittapadumiya spoke these verses.
