"To the Blessed One Siddhattha, The foremost of the world, the steadfast one, Who proclaimed the truth, Who brought beings to Nibbāna. 74. "Having brought a water-born lotus, A beautiful hundred-petalled flower, I made a parasol of flowers, And offered it to the Buddha. 75. "Siddhattha, the knower of the world, The recipient of offerings, The Teacher, standing in the assembly of monks, Spoke this verse. 76. "'He who, having gladdened his mind, Held up a flower-parasol for me; By that gladdening of mind, He will not go to a bad destination.' 77. "Having said this, the Fully Awakened One, Siddhattha, the leader of the world, Having dismissed the assembly, Ascended into the sky. 78. "When the god among men ascended, The white parasol also ascended; Before the best of Buddhas, The excellent parasol went. 79. "Ninety-four eons ago, When I offered the parasol; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of the flower-parasol. 80. "In the seventy-fourth eon, There were eight water-flames; Endowed with seven treasures, Mighty Wheel-turning Monarchs. 81. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Pupphacchattiya spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna is of the Elder Pupphacchattiya. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Saparivārachattadāyaka 82. "Padumuttara, the knower of the world, The recipient of offerings; Like a rain of water in the sky, He rained the rain of Dhamma. 83. "I saw that Fully Awakened One, Teaching the deathless state; Having gladdened my own mind, I went to my own home. 84. "Taking an adorned parasol, I approached the best of men; Ha I stood with a joyful mind, and threw it up into the sky. 85. Like a well-controlled chariot, or a tamed elephant, the excellent disciple; Approaching the Fully Awakened One, it settled on his head. 86. The compassionate, merciful Buddha, leader of the world; Seated in the assembly of monks, spoke these verses. 87. ‘By whom this parasol was given, adorned and delightful; By that clarity of mind, he will not go to a bad destination. 88. ‘Seven times among the devas, he will rule as king of devas; And thirty-two times as king, he will be a wheel-turning monarch. 89. ‘In a hundred thousand aeons, born of the Okkāka clan; A teacher named Gotama by clan, will arise in the world. 90. ‘An heir to his teachings, a true son, born of the Dhamma; Having fully understood all defilements, he will attain Nibbāna, without defilements.’ 91. Understanding the Buddha’s words, spoken with noble speech; With a clear and joyful mind, I generated even more delight. 92. Having abandoned human birth, I entered divine birth; My excellent mansion, arose, delightful. 93. As I came forth from the mansion, a white parasol was held; Then I gained the perception, ‘This is the fruit of past kamma.’ 94. Having passed away from the deva realm, I came to human existence; Thirty-six times a wheel-turning monarch, for seven hundred aeons. 95. Having passed away from that body, I went to the city of the thirty (devas); Wandering on gradually, I came back to human existence. 96. When I entered my mother’s womb, a white parasol was held; At seven years of age, I went forth into homelessness. 97. A brahmin named Sunanda, skilled in mantras; Taking a crystal parasol, for the chief disciple then. 98. The great hero, Sāriputta, the great speaker, approved; Hearing his approval, I recollected my past kamma. 99. Raising my joined hands, I clarified my own mind; Recollecting my former kamma, I attained arahantship. 100. Having arisen From that seat, placing my hands together on my head; Having saluted the Fully Awakened One, I uttered this speech. 101. A hundred thousand aeons ago, the Buddha, unsurpassed in the world; Padumuttara, knower of the world, receiver of offerings. 102. To him a parasol was given by me, variegated and well-adorned; With both hands he took it, the Self-Existent, the foremost person. 103. Oh, the Buddha! Oh, the Dhamma! Oh, the Teacher's attainment for us! By the gift of a single parasol, I did not fall into a bad destination. 104. My defilements are burnt away, all existences are uprooted; Having fully understood all taints, I dwell without taints. 105. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder, the Giver of the Parasol with its Retinue, spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna is that of the Elder, the Giver of the Parasol with its Retinue. The thirty-third chapter is the Umāpupphiya Vagga. Its summary – Umāpuppha and Pulina, Hāsa, Yañña, Nimittaka; Saṃsāvaka, Nigguṇḍī, Sumana, Pupphachattaka; And Saparivārachatta, with more than seven hundred verses.
