The Chapter of the Giver of Protection 1. The Apadāna of the Elder, the Giver of Protection 1. By me was a path made, for the sage Dhammadassī; And protection was given by me, to that Lord of bipeds. 2. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, the deed I did then; By that special deed, the destruction of defilements was attained by me. 3. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching done. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder, the Giver of Food 4. Well-born like a sāla sapling, arisen like a sobhañjana tree; Like a banner pole in the sky, the Conqueror always shines. 5. To that god of gods, the great sage Vessabhū; I gave food, with a brightly clear mind. 6. That the Buddha approved for me, the Self-existent, the Unconquered; 'When born in existence, may fruit arise for you.' 7. Thirty-one aeons ago from here, the gift I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the food. 8. Twenty-five aeons ago from here, I was one called Amittaka; Endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning monarch. 9. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching done. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder, the Perceiver of Going 10. There is no footprint in the sky, in the air, in the wind's path; I saw the Conqueror Siddhattha, going in the celestial realm. 11. Seeing the robe of the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, stirred by the wind; Joy arose in me at once, seeing the sage's going. 12. Ninety-four aeons ago from here, the perception I gained then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the perception of the Buddha. 13. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Gatasāññaka spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of Elder Gatasāññaka. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Sattapadumiya 14. I lived by the river bank, a brahmin named Nesāda; With hundred-petaled flowers, I swept clean my hermitage. 15. The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, Siddhattha, leader of the world; Seeing him going through the sky, joy arose in me. 16. Having gone forth to meet the Fully Awakened One, the world's foremost, the bull among men; Having led him past my hermitage, I scattered lotus flowers. 17. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I offered the flowers; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 18. From here, in the seventh aeon, four supreme rulers arose; Endowed with the seven treasures, powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 19. The four analytical knowledges... and so on... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Sattapadumiya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of Elder Sattapadumiya. 5. The Apadāna of Elder Pupphāsanadāyaka 20. The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, like the sun with yellow rays; Going not far away, Siddhattha, the unconquered. 21. Having gone forth to meet him, and led him into my hermitage; A flower-seat was given by me, with a mind utterly clear. 22. Having raised my hands in reverence, I was then filled with rapture; Having made my mind clear towards the Buddha, I dedicated that deed. 23. Whatever merit I have done, towards the self-born, the unconquered; By all that wholesome deed, may I be pure in the teaching. 24. Ninety-four aeons ago, I then gave the flower-seat; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the flower-seat. 25. The four analytical knowledges... and so on... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Pupphāsanadāyaka spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of Elder Pupphāsanadāyaka. 6. The Apadāna of Elder Āsanasanthavika 26. A supreme shrine, named, of Sikhi, the kinsman of the world; In a forest, a barren land, a wilderness, I wandered blindly then. 27. As I came out of the forest, a lion-throne was seen by me; With a single shoulder bared, making an añjali, I praised the leader of the world. 28. Having praised for half a day, the Buddha, the foremost leader of the world; Delighted, with a joyful mind, I uttered this speech. 29. ‘Homage to you, O thoroughbred of men, homage to you, O supreme man; You are omniscient, O great hero, foremost in the world, O bull among men’. 30. Having greatly praised Sikhi, by making a sign; Having saluted the seat, I departed facing north. 31. In the thirty-first eon from now, that I praised the best of speakers; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that praise. 32. In the twenty-seventh eon from now, there were seven unequalled ones; Endowed with seven jewels, mighty Wheel-turning monarchs. 33. The four analytical knowledges… (and so on)… the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Āsanasanthavika spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Āsanasanthavika. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Saddasaññaka 34. Sudassana, the great hero, teaches the deathless state; Surrounded by disciples, he dwells in the supreme abode. 35. With that sweet speech, he gathers the great multitude; And a vast sound arose, a blessing for gods and humans. 36. Having heard the resounding sound, of Siddhattha, the great sage; Having gladdened my mind by the sound, I saluted the leader of the world. 37. In the ninety-fourth eon from now, that perception I gained then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the perception of the Buddha. 38. The four analytical knowledges… (and so on)… the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Saddasaññaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna of the Elder Saddasaññaka. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Tiraṃsiya 39. Kesa Like one nobly born, Like a mass of fire on a mountain; Illuminating all directions, Siddhattha in the mountain range. 40. "The light of the sun, And the light of the moon likewise; And seeing the light of the Buddha, Joy arose in me. 41. "Seeing the three lights, The Fully Awakened One, the supreme disciple; Making the deer-skin cloak over one shoulder, I praised the leader of the world. 42. "Indeed, there are three light-makers, In the world, dispellers of the world's darkness; The moon and the sun, And the Buddha, the leader of the world. 43. "Having presented this simile, I praised the Great Sage; Having praised the Buddha's glory, I rejoiced in heaven for an eon. 44. "Ninety-four eons ago, When I praised the Buddha; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of that praise. 45. "Sixty-one eons ago, There was one who held knowledge; Endowed with seven treasures, A powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 46. "The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Tiraṃsiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Tiraṃsiya, the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of Thera Kandalipupphiya 47. "On the bank of the Sindhu river, I was a farmer then; Engaged in others' work, Dependent on others' food. 48. "As I was walking along the Sindhu, I saw Siddhattha, the Conqueror; Seated in concentration, Like a hundred-petaled lotus in bloom. 49. "Seven plantain flowers, Having cut them from their stalks then; I placed them on the head, Of the Buddha, kinsman of the sun. 50. "The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, Calm and composed; Like an elephant in rut in three ways, Difficult to approach. 51. "Approaching him, The wise one, with faculties developed; Raising my hands in reverence, I bowed to the Teacher. 52. "Ninety-four eons ago, When I offered flowers; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 53. "The four analytical knowledges... ...The Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Because the elder Kandalipupphiya spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of the elder Kandalipupphiya. 10. The Apadāna of the elder Kumudamāliya 54. The Bull, the excellent, the hero, the great seer, the conqueror; Vipassin, the great hero, like a noble-born lion. 55. Proceeding on the road, the recipient of offerings; Having taken a garland of water lilies, I scattered it over the best of Buddhas. 56. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I offered flowers; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 57. The four analytical knowledges… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable elder Kumudamāliya spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of the elder Kumudamāliya. The thirty-second chapter, the Giver of Protection. Its summary – Giver of Protection, Giver of Food, Mindful of the Path, Padumiya; Flower-seated, Santhavika, Mindful of Faith, Tiraṃsiya; Kandalika and Kumudi, fifty-seven verses.
