The Chapter of Padumakesara 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Padumakesariya 1. In the assembly of sages, I was formerly a great elephant; By the grace of the great sages, I scattered lotus pollen. 2. Among the supreme Paccekabuddhas, those free from defilements, such ones; Having gladdened my mind towards them, for an eon I rejoiced in heaven. 3. Ninety-one eons ago, I scattered pollen then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 4. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight deliverances; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Padumakesariya Thera spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Padumakesariya Thera. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Sabbagandhiya 5. A garland of perfume was given by me, to Vipassī, the great sage; I gave to the upright one, a supreme silk cloth. 6. Ninety-one eons ago, the cloth I gave before; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of perfume. 7. From this, fifteen eons ago, a khattiya named Sucela; Endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 8. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Sabbagandhiya Thera spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Sabbagandhiya Thera. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Paramannadāyaka 9. Shining like a Kanikāra flower, like the rising sun; I saw Vipassī, the Buddha, foremost in the world, a bull among men. 10. Having raised my hands in reverence, I led him to my home; Having led the Fully Enlightened One, I gave him choice food. 11. Ninety-one eons ago, I gave choice food then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of choice food. 12. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Paramannadāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Paramannadāyaka Thera. Third. 4. The Apadāna of Thera Dhammasaññaka 13. For the Blessed One Vipassī, there was a great Bodhi festival; The Self-Awakened One, the world's chief, the bull among men, was as if standing by the tree. 14. The Blessed One at that time, surrounded by the Sangha of bhikkhus; Proclaimed the Four Noble Truths, uttering a bull-like speech. 15. Teaching concisely, and teaching expansively; The Self-Awakened One, with the veil removed, brought peace to the great multitude. 16. Having heard the Dhamma of that Steadfast One, the world's chief; Having worshipped the Teacher's feet, I departed facing north. 17. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I heard that Dhamma; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of hearing the Dhamma. 18. Thirty-three aeons from now, I was one great king; Named Sutavā, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 19. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Dhammasaññaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Dhammasaññaka, the fourth. 5. The Apadāna of Thera Phaladāyaka 20. On the bank of the river Bhāgīrathī, there was an hermitage then; I went to that hermitage, with fruit in hand, full of expectation. 21. There I saw Vipassī, like the sun with golden rays; All the fruit I had, I gave to the Teacher. 22. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 23. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Phaladāyaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Phaladāyaka, the fifth. 6. The Apadāna of Thera Sampasādaka 24. 'Homage to you, O Buddha, O Hero, you are utterly freed in every way; When calamity has befallen me, be my refuge.” 25. Siddhattha, the unequalled person in the world, declared to him: “The Saṅgha is like the great ocean, immeasurable, unsurpassed. 26. “‘There, in that pure field, which yields endless fruit; Having gladdened your mind in the Saṅgha, sow a good seed.’ 27. Having said this, the Omniscient One, the chief of the world, the bull among men; Having advised me, ascended into the sky. 28. Soon after the Omniscient One, the bull among men, had departed; I met with death, and was reborn in Tusita. 29. Then, in that pure field, which yields endless fruit; Having gladdened my mind in the Saṅgha, I rejoiced in heaven for an eon. 30. Ninety-four eons ago, I then gained that gladdened mind; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that gladdened mind. 31. The four analytical knowledges…etc… The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Sampasādaka spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna: The Elder Sampasādaka. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Ārāmadāyaka 32. “An park was planted by me, for the Blessed One Siddhattha; With cool-shaded trees, where birds were resting. 33. I saw the stainless Buddha, the recipient of offerings; I led the park to him, the chief of the world, the bull among men. 34. Joyful with a joyful mind, I offered fruits and flowers; Then, with arisen joy, I dedicated that grove. 35. Because I gave this to the Buddha, with a very clear mind; When I am reborn in existence, my fruit is reborn. 36. Ninety-four eons ago, when I gave that park; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the park. 37. Thirty-seven eons from now, there were seven mild and cool ones; Seven powerful Wheel-turning monarchs, endowed with seven jewels. 38. The four analytical knowledges…etc… The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Ārāmadāyaka The elder Rāmadāyaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna of the Elder Ārāmadāyaka. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Anulepadāyaka 39. I saw a disciple of the sage Atthadassī. As he was doing new work, I approached the boundary. 40. When the new work was finished, I gave an ointment. With a clear and joyful mind, to the unsurpassed field of merit. 41. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the ointment. 42. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Anulepadāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of the Elder Anulepadāyaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Buddhasaññaka 43. Like the rising sun with a hundred rays, like the radiant sun with yellow rays; Gone into the forest, peaceful, the world's chief, the bull among men. 44. I saw in a dream, Siddhattha, the world's leader. Having clarified my mind there, I was reborn in a good destination. 45. Ninety-four aeons ago, the perception I gained then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the perception of the Buddha. 46. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Buddhasaññaka spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of the Elder Buddhasaññaka. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Pabbhāradāyaka 47. For the Blessed One Piyadassī, a rock-shelter was cleansed by me. And I provided a water jar, for the use of the Such-one. 48. This the Buddha declared to me, Piyadassī, the great sage: "A thousand-branched, hundred-knobbed, green-colored banner-pole. 49. That monument will arise, and not a little treasure. Having given the gift of a rock-shelter, for an aeon I rejoiced in heaven. 50. From here, in the thirty-second aeon, a khattiya named Susuddha, endowed with the seven treasures, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 51. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thereupon, the Elder Pabbhāradāyaka spoke these verses. The tenth is the Apadāna of the Elder Pabbhāradāyaka. The thirty-first is the chapter of Padumakesara. Its summary – Kesara and Gandhamanna, Dhammasaññī and Phaladāyaka; And Pasādārāmadāyī, Lepaka, Buddhasaññaka; And Pabbhāradāyaka, fifty-one verses are recounted.
