29. The Chapter of the Leaf-Giver 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Paṇṇadāyaka 1. I was seated in a leaf-hut, eating a meal of leaves. While I was thus seated, the great sage approached me. 2. It was Siddhattha, light of the world, healer of all worlds. To him, I gave a leaf, as he sat on a leaf-mat. 3. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that leaf; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the leaf-gift. 4. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Paṇṇadāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of the Elder Paṇṇadāyaka. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Phaladāyaka 5. Content like Mount Sineru, similar to the earth; Having risen from absorption, he came to me for alms. 6. Harītaka, āmalaka, mango, rose-apple, vibhītaka; Jujube, bhallātaka, bael, and phārusaka fruits. 7. To Siddhattha, the great sage, compassionate to all worlds; All that was given by me, with a mind completely clear. 8. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the fruit-gift. 9. Fifty-seven aeons ago, there was a khattiya named Ekajjha; Endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 10. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Phaladāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of the Elder Phaladāyaka. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Paccuggamaṇiya 11. Like a lion roaming the forest, like a noble bull; Like a splendid kakudha tree, the best of men was coming. 12. To Siddhattha, light of the world, healer of all worlds; I went forth to meet him, with a mind completely clear. 13. Ninety-four aeons ago, I went forth to meet him... chief of men. I have not known misfortune, this is the fruit of welcoming. 14. “Thirty-seven aeons ago from here, I was one ruler of men; By the name of Saparivāra, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 15. “The four analytical knowledges… (etc.) …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the venerable elder Paccuggamaniya spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of the elder Paccuggamaniya. 4. The Apadāna of the elder Ekapupphiya 16. “At the southern gate, I was a demon then; I saw the stainless Buddha, like the sun with yellow rays. 17. “To Vipassī, the chief of men, the benefactor of all the world; One flower was given by me, to the Lord of bipeds, the Such One. 18. “Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that flower; I have not known misfortune, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 19. “The four analytical knowledges… (etc.) …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the venerable elder Ekapupphiya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the elder Ekapupphiya. 5. The Apadāna of the elder Maghavapupphiya 20. “On the bank of the Nammadā river, the Self-existent, the Unconquered One; He had attained concentration, perfectly serene and undisturbed. 21. “Having seen, with a joyful mind, the Fully Awakened One, the Unconquered; I then with a Maghava flower, worshipped the Self-existent One. 22. “Ninety-one aeons ago, when I worshipped with that flower; I have not known misfortune, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 23. “The four analytical knowledges… (etc.) …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the venerable elder Maghavapupphiya spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the elder Maghavapupphiya. 6. The Apadāna of the elder Upaṭṭhākadāyaka 24. “Walking on the road, the recipient of offerings; The Lord of bipeds, the Great Elephant, the World’s Foremost, the Bull among men. 25. “Having caused him to be called, the benefactor of all the world; A personal attendant was given by me, to Siddhattha, the Great Seer. 26. “Having accepted [he accepted] The Fully Awakened One, the Great Sage, taught the way out. Rising from that seat, he departed facing east. 27. Ninety-four aeons ago, I was a server then. I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that service. 28. Fifty-seven aeons ago, named Balasenasana, endowed with seven treasures, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 29. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Upaṭṭhākadāyaka spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna: The Elder Upaṭṭhākadāyaka. 7. The Elder Apadāniya's Apadāna 30. The apadānas of the Well-gone Ones, I praised the Great Sages. And I bowed my head at their feet, delighted with my own hands. 31. Ninety-two aeons ago from here, I praised the apadāna. I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that praise. 32. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Apadāniya spoke these verses. The Seventh Apadāna: The Elder Apadāniya. 8. The Elder Sattāhapabbajita's Apadāna 33. Of the Blessed One Vipassī, the Saṅgha was honored and revered. Calamity had come upon me, a family split had occurred before. 34. Having gone forth into homelessness, to quell that calamity, I, delighted there for seven days, desiring the Teacher's instruction. 35. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I went forth then, I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that going forth. 36. Sixty-seven aeons ago, there were seven great kings. Known as Sunikkhama, mighty Wheel-turning Monarchs. 37. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Sattāhapabbajita spoke these verses. The Eighth Apadāna: The Elder Sattāhapabbajita. 9. The Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāyika's Apadāna 38. Veṭambhinī was my name, my father was peaceful then. My hand... Having carried, I presented to the Great Sage. 39. "They will point out this one, The Buddhas, world's foremost leaders; I attended them respectfully, With my own hands, full of faith. 40. "In the thirty-first eon from now, I attended the Buddhas then; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of that attendance. 41. "In the twenty-third eon from now, There were four khattiyas, Named Samaṇupaṭṭhākā, Mighty Wheel-turning monarchs. 42. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāyika spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of the Elder Buddhupaṭṭhāyika. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Pubbaṅgamiya 43. "Eighty-four thousand We went forth, without possessions; I was the leader among them, For the attainment of the highest goal. 44. "These ones, with passion, with becoming, With minds perfectly clear, undefiled; They attended respectfully, With their own hands, full of faith. 45. "Destroyed defilements, abandoned hatred, Done their duty, without defilements; They pervaded with minds of loving-kindness, Self-existent, unconquered. 46. "Having attended them, The fully enlightened Buddhas, mindful; Having reached death, We went to the state of devas. 47. "In the ninety-fourth eon from now, That virtue I maintained; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of that self-restraint. 48. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Pubbaṅgamiya spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of the Elder Pubbaṅgamiya. The twenty-ninth chapter of the Leaf-Giver. Its summary – Leaf, Fruit, Going forth to meet, And One-flower, Maghavā; And the Apadāna of the Attendant, Going forth, Buddha-attendant; And Pubbaṅgama – Forty-eight verses are recounted.
