28. The Chapter on the Golden Ornament 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Suvaṇṇabibbohaniyo 1. I gave a single seat, delighted with my own hands; And I gave a golden ornament, for the attainment of the highest goal. 2. Ninety-one aeons ago, I gave the golden ornament; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the golden ornament. 3. Sixty-three aeons from now, a king named Asama; Endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 4. The four analytical knowledges, and the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Suvaṇṇabibbohaniyo Thera spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of the Elder Suvaṇṇabibbohaniyo. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Tilamuṭṭhidāyaka 5. Knowing my intention, the Teacher, leader of the world; With a mind-made body, came by psychic power. 6. Having approached the Teacher, and worshipped the supreme man; With a joyful mind, cheerful, I gave a handful of sesame seeds. 7. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that gift; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the handful of sesame seeds. 8. Sixteen aeons from now, a king named Tantiso; Endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 9. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Tilamuṭṭhidāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of the Elder Tilamuṭṭhidāyaka. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Caṅkoṭakiya 10. Dwelling in a mountain cave, near the great ocean; Having gone forth to meet him, I gave a flower basket. 11. To the Great Seer Siddhattha, who had compassion for all beings; Having given a flower basket, for an aeon I rejoiced in heaven. 12. Ninety-four aeons ago, I gave the flower basket then; I know no suffering. This is the fruit of Caṅkoṭaka. 13. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder, Venerable Caṅkoṭakiya, spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of the Elder Caṅkoṭakiya. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Abbhañjanadāyaka (Giver of Ointment) 14. To the Blessed One Koṇḍañña, who was free from passion, steadfast; whose mind was like the sky, unperturbed, a meditator. 15. Who had overcome all delusion, who sought the welfare of all worlds; ointment was given by me, to the Lord of bipeds, the steadfast one. 16. An immeasurable eon ago from here, I gave ointment then; I do not know misfortune, this is the fruit of the ointment. 17. Fifteen eons from here, there was a king named Cirappo; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 18. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder, Venerable Abbhañjanadāyaka, spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Abbhañjanadāyaka. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekañjalika (One-Anjali) 19. To the one dwelling in an fig tree, on a fixed leaf-bed; I gave a place to stay, to the ascetic, the great sage. 20. To Tissa, the Lord of bipeds, the world's protector, the steadfast one; raising my hands in añjali, I spread a flower-bed. 21. Ninety-two eons ago from here, when I made the flower-bed; I do not know misfortune, this is the fruit of the bed. 22. In the fourteenth eon from here, I was a lord of men; named Ekaañjaliko, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 23. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder, Venerable Ekañjaliko, spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the Elder Ekañjalika. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Potthakadāyaka (Giver of a Book) 24. Concerning the Teacher, the Dhamma, and also the great sage Saṅgha; a gift of a book was given by me, to the unsurpassed worthy of offerings. 25. Ninety-one eons ago from here, when I performed that deed then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of giving a book. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Potthakadāyaka spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna is that of Thera Potthakadāyaka. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was going against the stream; I placed seven māluva flowers on the pyre. Ninety-four aeons ago, I worshipped the pyre; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of worshipping the pyre. Sixty-seven aeons ago, named Paṭijaggasa; Seven wheel-turning monarchs, endowed with seven jewels, arose. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Citakapūjaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna is that of Thera Citakapūjaka. In the Himavanta mountain, the great river was beautiful to see; There I saw one free from passion, radiant and beautiful. Seeing him endowed with supreme tranquility, my mind was amazed; I gave him an āluva, pleased with my own hands. Thirty-one aeons ago, the fruit I gave then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the āluva. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Āluvadāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna is that of Thera Āluvadāyaka. Romasa by name, the Self-Existent, well-behaved then; A white lotus was given by me, with a clear mind. Ninety-four aeons ago, I gave the white lotus then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the white lotus. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Eka The elder Puṇḍarīka spoke these verses. The ninth, the Apadāna of the Elder Ekapuṇḍarīka. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Taraṇīya 38. On a great, uneven path, a bridge was built by me; For the crossing of the world, pleased with my own hands. 39. Ninety-one aeons ago, that bridge was built by me; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of the bridge. 40. Fifty-five aeons ago, I was one Samogadha; Endowed with seven treasures, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 41. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Taraṇīya spoke these verses. The tenth, the Apadāna of the Elder Taraṇīya. The twenty-eighth chapter, Suvaṇṇabibbohana. Its summary – Suvaṇṇa, and Tilamuṭṭhi, Caṅkoṭa, Abhañjana, Añjalī; Potthaka, Citamāluvā, Ekapuṇḍarī, with Setu; Forty-two verses, counted by the wise. The eleventh recitation section.
