27. The Chapter on Tossing Lotuses 1. The Apadāna of Thera Akasukkhipiya 1. Golden-colored Siddhattha, walking in the marketplace; Taking two lotus flowers, I approached the Bull of Men. 2. One flower I placed at the feet of the Best of Buddhas; And taking one flower, I tossed it into the sky. 3. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I offered that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the flower-gift. 4. Thirty-six aeons ago from now, I was one great king; Named Antalikkhakara, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 5. The four analytical knowledges, and the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Akasukkhipiya Thera spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Thera Akasukkhipiya. 2. The Apadāna of Thera Telamakkhiya 6. When the Blessed One Siddhattha, the Bull of Men, had attained Nibbana; I immediately smeared oil on the Bodhi tree's railing. 7. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I smeared that oil; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the smearing. 8. Twenty-four aeons ago from now, there was a king named Succhavi; Endowed with the seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 9. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on) ... the Buddha's teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Telamakkhiya Thera spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Thera Telamakkhiya. 3. The Apadāna of Thera Aḍḍhacandiya 10. To the Blessed One Tissa's supreme Bodhi tree; A half-moon I gave, to the tree's base. 11. Ninety-two aeons ago from now, when I offered that moon; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the Bodhi worship. 12. Twenty-five aeons ago from now, there was a king named Devala; Endowed with the seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 13. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on) ... the Buddha's teaching done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Aḍḍhacandiya Thera spoke these those verses he spoke. The third Apadāna of Aḍḍhacandiya Thera. 4. The Apadāna of Padīpadāyaka Thera 14. Being a deity, I then descended to the earth; I gave five lamps, pleased with my own hands. 15. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that lamp; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the lamp-gift. 16. Fifty-five aeons ago, I was a sole king; Named Samantacakkhu, a powerful Wheel-turning monarch. 17. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, the six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Padīpadāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of Padīpadāyaka Thera. 5. The Apadāna of Biḷālidāyaka Thera 18. Not far from the Himalayas, there is a mountain named Romasa; At the foot of that mountain, was a monk with developed faculties. 19. Taking some bel fruit, I gave them to the monk; The great hero, the Self-Awakened, the unconquered, approved. 20. Those bel fruits given by me, with a purified mind; As you are reborn in existence, may fruit be born for you. 21. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that bel fruit; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the bel fruit. 22. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, the six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Biḷālidāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of Biḷālidāyaka Thera. 6. The Apadāna of Macchadāyaka Thera 23. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was then an osprey; Having seized a large fish, I gave it to the sage Siddhattha. 24. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that fish; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the fish-gift. 25. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, the six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Macchadāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of Macchadāyaka Thera. 7. The Apadāna of Javahaṃsaka Thera 26. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river I was then a forest dweller; I saw the Buddha Siddhattha, walking in the sky. 27. Having raised my hands in reverence, looking up at the Great Sage; Having gladdened my own mind, I paid homage to the Leader. 28. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I paid homage to the best of men; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that homage. 29. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Javahaṃsaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna is that of Elder Javahaṃsaka. 8. The Apadāna of Elder Saḷalapupphiya 30. On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was then a kinnara; I saw the Buddha Vipassī, surrounded by a net of rays. 31. With a joyful and gladdened mind, and with supreme delight; Taking a saḷala flower, I scattered it over Vipassī. 32. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I worshipped with that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 33. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Saḷalapupphiya spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna is that of Elder Saḷalapupphiya. 9. The Apadāna of Elder Upāgatāsaya 34. In the middle of the Himalayas, there was a well-made lake; There I was a fearsome rakkhāsa, of a harmful nature. 35. Compassionate and merciful, Vipassī, the world's leader; Desiring to rescue me, came near to me. 36. To the Great Hero who had come, the God of gods, the best of men; I came out from my dwelling, and paid homage to the Teacher. 37. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I paid homage to the supreme man; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that homage. 38. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Upāgatāsaya spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna is that of Elder Upāgatāsaya. 10. The Apadāna of Elder Taraṇiya 39. Golden The Buddha, glorious, The Seer, worthy of offerings; The Teacher stood on the river bank, Surrounded by the assembly of monks. 40. "No boat was there, To cross the great ocean; Coming forth from the river, I ferried the Leader of the World. 41. "Ninety-one aeons ago, When I ferried that best of men; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of that ferrying. 42. "The four analytical knowledges, etc., The Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Taraṇiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Taraṇiya, the tenth. The chapter of Padumukkhipa, the twenty-seventh. Its summary – Ukkhipī and Telacandī, Dīpada and Biḷālido; Maccha, Java, Saḷalada, Rakkhasa, Taraṇa, ten; The verses counted here Are forty-one.
