24. The Chapter on the Water-Seat 1. The Aapadāna of Thera Udakāsanadāyaka (Giver of a Water-Seat) 1. “Having come out from the monastery gate, I spread out a plank; And offered water, For the attainment of the highest goal. 2. “Thirty-one aeons ago, The deed I did then; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the seat and water. 3. “Fifteen aeons from now, There was one named Abhisāma; Endowed with seven treasures, A mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 4. “The four analytical knowledges, And these eight deliverances; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Udakāsanadāyaka spoke these verses. The first Aapadāna of Thera Udakāsanadāyaka. 2. The Aapadāna of Thera Bhājanapālaka (Guardian of Bowls) 5. “In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a potter then; I guarded the bowls, For the community of monks at once. 6. “Ninety-one aeons ago, I guarded the bowls; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the bowls. 7. “Fifty-three aeons from now, There was one named Anantajālin; Endowed with seven treasures, A mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 8. “The four analytical knowledges… and so on… The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Bhājanapālaka spoke these verses. The Aapadāna of Thera Sālapupphiya (Giver of Sāla Flowers) 9. “In the city of Aruṇavatī, I was a baker then; Passing by my door, I saw the Victor Sikhī. 10. “Taking the Buddha’s bowl, I gave a sāla flower; To the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, With a mind full of faith. 11. “Thirty-one aeons ago, The flower I gave; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the sāla flower. 12. “Fourteen aeons from now, I was Amitañjala; Endowed with seven treasures, A mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 13. “The analytical knowledges… The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Sālapupphiya spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of Elder Sālapupphiya. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Kilañjadāyaka 14. In the delightful city of Tivarā, I was then a reed-worker; When Siddhattha, the light of the world, the people there were joyful. 15. For the worship of the world's protector, they sought a mat; To those performing the Buddha's worship, I gave a mat. 16. Ninety-four aeons ago, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the mat. 17. In the seventy-seventh aeon, I was a king named Jaladdhara; Endowed with seven treasures, a powerful Wheel-turning monarch. 18. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kilañjadāyaka spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of Elder Kilañjadāyaka. 5. The Apadāna of Elder Vedikāraka 19. At the excellent Bodhi tree of Vipassī, the Blessed One; With a serene and joyful mind, I made a railing. 20. Ninety-one aeons ago, I made the railing; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the railing. 21. Eleven aeons ago, I was Sūriyassama; Endowed with seven treasures, a powerful Wheel-turning monarch. 22. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Vedikāraka spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of Elder Vedikāraka. 6. The Apadāna of Elder Vaṇṇakāra 23. In the city of Aruṇavatī, I was then a painter; At the shrine, I dyed various cloths with many colors. 24. Thirty-one aeons ago, the color I dyed then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of color. 25. Twenty-three aeons from now, named Vaṇṇasama; Endowed with seven treasures, and a universal monarch, mighty. 26. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations, The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Vaṇṇakāra spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Vaṇṇakāra, the sixth. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Piyālapupphiya 27. I was formerly a hunter, in the forest, in the wilderness. Seeing a blooming Piyāla tree, I threw (flowers) on the path. 28. In the ninety-first eon, when I worshipped with flowers, I know no bad destination. This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 29. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations, The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Piyālapupphiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Piyālapupphiya, the seventh. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Ambayāgadāyaka 30. Not proud of my own craft, I went to the forest. Seeing the Fully Awakened One going, I gave mango gruel. 31. In the ninety-first eon, when I gave that gift, I know no bad destination. This is the fruit of the mango gruel. 32. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations, The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Ambayāgadāyaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Ambayāgadāyaka, the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Jagatikāraka 33. When the Lord of the World had attained Nibbāna, the supreme man, the Seer of the Goal, a platform was caused to be made by me, for the supreme stupa of the Buddha. 34. Eighteen hundred eons ago, when I did that deed, I know no bad destination. This is the fruit of the platform. 35. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations, The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Jagatikāraka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Jagatikāraka, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Vāsidāyaka 36. I was formerly a blacksmith, in the excellent city of Tivarā. One axe was given by me, to the Self-Awakened, the unconquered one. 37. In the ninety-fourth eon, when I gave that axe, I know no bad destination. (This is the fruit of the axe-giving.) This is its fruit. 38. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight deliverances; The six direct knowledges are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Vāsidāyaka spoke these verses. The Tenth Apadāna of the Elder Vāsidāyaka. The Twenty-fourth Chapter: Udakāsana. Its Summary – Udakāsana, Bhājana, Sālapupphī, Kilañjaka; Vedikā, and Vaṇṇakāra, Piyāla, Ambayāga; Jagatī, and Vāsidātā, Verses thirty and eight.
