The Chapter of the Giver of Supports 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Ālambaṇadāyaka 1. To the Blessed One, Atthadassī, the foremost of the world, the steadfast; A support was given by me, to the lord of bipeds, the steadfast. 2. I attain the earth, vast, with the ocean as its limit; And I wield sovereignty over beings, and over the land. 3. My defilements are burnt away, all existences are uprooted; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 4. From here, sixty-two aeons ago, there were three kings; Named Ekāpassita, mighty universal monarchs. 5. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Ālambaṇadāyaka spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of the Elder Ālambaṇadāyaka. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Ajinadāyaka 6. Thirty-one aeons ago from here, I was a leader of a group; I saw the Stainless Buddha, the recipient of offerings. 7. A piece of skin was given by me, to Sikhī, the kinsman of the world; By that karma, O lord of bipeds, foremost of the world, bull among men. 8. Having experienced prosperity, I burnt away defilements; I bear my last body, in the teaching of the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. 9. Thirty-one aeons ago from here, the skin which I gave; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the skin. 10. Five aeons ago from here, I was a king, Sudāyaka; Endowed with seven jewels, a mighty universal monarch. 11. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Ajinadāyaka spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of the Elder Ajinadāyaka. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Dverataniya 12. Formerly I was a hunter, in the forest, in the wilderness; I saw the Stainless Buddha, the recipient of offerings. 13. A piece of meat was given by me, to Vipassī, the great sage; In the world with its devas, I caused sovereignty to be. 14. By this gift of meat, a jewel, Nibba are for me. These two jewels in the world, for the attainment of the visible Dhamma. 15. All of them I experience, by the power of the gift of meat; And my body is soft, wisdom is subtly discerning. 16. In the ninety-first eon, when I gave the meat then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the gift of meat. 17. From this, in the fourth eon, I was a ruler; named Mahārohita, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 18. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 19. For the Blessed One Siddhattha, a railing was caused to be made by me; And protection was given by me, to the Well-gone, the Great Seer. 20. By that special deed, I saw no fear or terror; Wherever I was reborn, fear did not exist for me. 21. In the ninety-fourth eon, when I made the railing before; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the railing. 22. From this, in the sixth eon, named Apassenasa; endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 23. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 24. For the Blessed One Vipassī, I gave a fire-hall; and a dwelling for the sick, a receiver of warm water. 25. By that deed, this of mine, my existence is well-formed; I know no sickness, this is the fruit of the meritorious deed. 26. In the ninety-first eon, when I gave the hall then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the fire-hall. 27. And from this, in the seventh eon, I was one, unconquered; endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, and the six supernormal powers, have been realized by me. The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Abyādhika Thera spoke these verses. The Fifth Apadāna: Abyādhika Thera. 6. The Apadāna of Aṅkolapupphiya Thera My name was Nārada, or they knew me as Kassapa; I saw the foremost of recluses, Vipassī, honored by gods. The Buddha, possessing minor characteristics, recipient of offerings; Taking an Aṅkola flower, I offered it to the Buddha. In the ninety-first eon, when I worshipped with that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. In the seventy-fourth eon, there was a king named Romasa; Adorned with garlands and ornaments, with chariots, armies, and vehicles. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, and the six supernormal powers, have been realized by me. The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Aṅkolapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna: Aṅkolapupphiya Thera. 7. The Apadāna of Sovaṇṇavaṭaṃsakiya Thera Going forth to the pleasure garden, I saw the world's leader; Taking a golden crest, well-made. Quickly ascending from there, I, on an elephant's shoulder; Offered to the Buddha, to Sikhī, the kinsman of the world. In the thirty-first eon from now, when I offered that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of flower-worship. In the twenty-seventh eon from now, I was one ruler of people; Named Mahāpatāpa, a powerful Wheel-turning monarch. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations, and the six supernormal powers, have been realized by me. The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Sovaṇṇavaṭaṃsakiya Thera spoke these verses. The Seventh Apadāna: Sovaṇṇavaṭaṃsakiya Thera. 8. The Apadāna of Miñjavaṭaṃsakiya Thera When the world's leader had attained Nibbāna, Sikhī, the foremost of speakers; Covered with garlands, I performed worship of the Bodhi. From this, in the thirty-first eon, the worship I did then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the Bodhi worship. 41. From this, in the twenty-sixth eon, I was named Meghabbha; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 42. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Miñjavaṭaṃsaki recited these verses. The eighth Apadāna of the Elder Miñjavaṭaṃsaki. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Sukatāveḷiya 43. Asita by name, I was a garland-maker then; taking a garland, I went to give it to the king. 44. Not yet having reached the king, I saw the leader Sikhi; joyful with a joyful mind, I offered it to the Buddha. 45. From this, in the thirty-first eon, the flower I worshipped with; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the Buddha worship. 46. From this, in the twenty-fifth eon, I was a mighty king; Vebhāra by name, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 47. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Sukatāveḷiya recited these verses. The ninth Apadāna of the Elder Sukatāveḷiya. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekavandaniya 48. The bull, the excellent, the hero, Vessabhū, the conqueror; with a clear mind, joyful, I bowed to the supreme Buddha. 49. From this, in the thirty-first eon, the deed I did then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the bowing. 50. In the twenty-fourth eon, named Vikatānanda; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 51. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Ekavandaniya recited these verses. The tenth Apadāna of the Elder Ekavandaniya. The twenty-third chapter, Ālambaṇadāyaka. Its summary – Ālambaṇa and Ajina, Maṃsadārakkha and Dāyaka; Abyādhi, Aṅkola, Bakula, gold, garland of kernels and homage; Fifty-five verses counted by meaning-seers.
